The literature study was conducted by using the Web of Science (WoS) database, employing bibliometric analysis to examine all papers released from 1980 to 2020. The search was performed using the terms "sepsis, septicemia, septic shock" specifically within the titles of the publications. The findings of the literature research revealed a total of 51,725 articles. Out of the total number of publications, 26,896 articles were identified, accounting for 51.9% of the total. The bibliometric study revealed that the United States had the largest number of papers (8693), followed by China (2807), Germany (2299), France (1606), and the United Kingdom (1932)...

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection is a global health challenge that requires continuous advancements in diagnostic and prognostic tools. Traditional markers, such as CD4 cell counts and viral load, have played a crucial role in monitoring disease progression and guiding therapeutic interventions. However, emerging research suggests that platelet index ratios may serve as valuable biomarkers in assessing immune health and managing HIV-associated complications. This paper explores the significance of platelet index ratios, including platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio and mean platelet volume-to-lymphocyte ratio, as potential indicators of immune system status in individuals living with HIV...

OBJECTIVES: COVID-19 pandemic surges strained hospitals globally. We performed a systematic review to examine measures of pandemic caseload surge and its impact on mortality of hospitalized patients. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science. STUDY SELECTION: English-language studies published between December 1, 2019, and November 22, 2023, which reported the association between pandemic "surge"-related measures and mortality in hospitalized patients...

OBJECTIVES: To compare symptoms and outcomes among infants aged ≤90 days tested for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in a broad, international sample of emergency departments (EDs). METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of infants aged 0 to 90 days with suspected SARS-CoV-2 infections tested using molecular approaches and with 14-day follow-up. The parent studies were conducted at 41 EDs in 10 countries (the global Pediatric Emergency Research Network; March 2020-June 2021) and 14 EDs across Canada (Pediatric Emergency Research Canada network; August 2020-February 2022)...

BACKGROUND: The present study investigates the impact of oxidative stress after bariatric surgery in patients with obesity. This field of study has gained great interest in recent years due to the role that oxidative stress plays in metabolic diseases. Obesity, by itself, can generate an increase in reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, intensifying cellular damage and promoting the progression of adverse metabolic conditions. In this context, bariatric surgery emerges as a candidate capable of modifying oxidative stress biomarkers, facilitating the patient's metabolic recovery...

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective Matched Cohort Study. OBJECTIVES: Low median household income (MHI) has been correlated with worsened surgical outcomes, but few studies have rigorously controlled for demographic and medical factors at the patient level. This study isolates the relationship between MHI and surgical outcomes in a lumbar fusion cohort using coarsened exact matching. METHODS: Patients undergoing single-level, posterior lumbar fusion at a single institution were consecutively enrolled and retrospectively analyzed (n = 4263)...

Tuberculosis (TB) is the leading cause of death among persons with HIV. In 2022, an estimated 167,000 TB-related deaths occurred globally among persons with HIV. TB preventive treatment (TPT) helps prevent TB disease and is recommended for persons at high risk for developing TB, including those with HIV. TPT, when taken with antiretroviral treatment (ART), can reduce TB-attributable deaths among persons with HIV. In 2018, the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) program committed to offer one course of TPT to all eligible clients receiving ART...

The mental health treatment gap remains wide across the world despite mental illness being a significant cause of disability globally. Both end-user and healthcare provider perspectives are critical to understanding barriers to mental healthcare and developing interventions. However, the views of providers are relatively understudied. In this review, we synthesized findings from current literature regarding providers' perspectives on barriers to mental healthcare in Canada. We searched Medline, PsycINFO, Embase, and CINAHL for eligible Canadian studies published since 2000...

There is an escalating trend in both the incidence and prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF). AF is linked to numerous other comorbidities, contributing to the emergence of multimorbidity. The sustained rise in multimorbidity and AF prevalences exerts a significant strain on healthcare systems globally. The understanding of the relation between multimorbidity and AF is essential to determine effective healthcare strategies, improve patient outcomes to adequately address the burden of AF. It not only begins with the accurate identification of comorbidities in the setting of AF...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Following the outbreak of viral infections from the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 virus in 2019 (coronavirus disease 2019 [COVID-19]), reports emerged of long-term neurologic sequelae in survivors. To better understand the burden of neurologic health care and incident neurologic diagnoses in the year after COVID-19 vs influenza, we performed an analysis of patient-level data from a large collection of electronic health records (EMR). METHODS: We acquired deidentified data from TriNetX, a global health research network providing access to EMR data...

Stroke can be characterized by rapidly emerging neurological manifestations of global or focal impairment of neurological functionality, with consequences lasting a day or more or giving rise to mortality, with no significant etiology other than vascular origin. A middle cerebral artery (MCA) infarct is a form of stroke that develops when the MCA, one of the primary arteries providing blood to the brain, becomes blocked or obstructed. Constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) is an emerging method that has mainly been utilized to rehabilitate stroke patients, especially upper extremities...

However, more is needed to know about the perceptions of novice bariatric nurses toward their role as case managers. This study aims to investigate the perceptions of novice Chinese bariatric nurses toward their roles during the early stages of their careers.
