INTRODUCTION: Performance on the certifying examinations such as the American Board of Internal Medicine Certification Exam (ABIM-CE) is of great interest to residents and their residency programs. Identification of factors associated with certification exam result may allow residency programs to recognize and intervene for residents at risk of failing. Despite this, residency programs have few evidence-based predictors of certification exam outcome. The change to pass-or-fail score reporting of the USA Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) Step 1 removes one such predictor...

BACKGROUND: Malaria is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among children under 5 years of age in Uganda. Although Karamoja sub-region has the highest prevalence of malaria, and one of the highest case fatality rates in children under 5 years, information on malaria case management for the sub-region is scarce. The study evaluated the malaria diagnostic and treatment practices, as well as the factors associated with inappropriate care for children under 5 years of age presenting with fever in two public hospitals within the sub-region...

The academic half-day (AHD) curriculum is an alternative to the noon conference (NC) approach. To date, there is little literature evaluating the transition from NC to AHD in internal medicine residency programs. We investigated the effectiveness of AHD by comparing in-training exam (ITE) and American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) certifying exam scores of residents before and after implementation of AHD. In 2019, we transitioned to the AHD curriculum. Averages of three consecutive years of NC (2016-2018) and AHD (2019-2021) were used for statistical testing to determine ITE and ABIM score changes...

The number of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) that form melt-quenched glasses remains limited, with most displaying the cag network topology. Here, we expand our studies to zni topology ZIFs, starting with ZIF-zni [Zn(Im)2 ] before changing its linker chemistry, by incorporating 2-methylimidazolate and 5-aminobenzimidazolate. ZIF-zni was found to melt and form a glass, with T m = 576 °C and T g = 322 °C, although it was not possible to prepare the glass without zinc oxide impurities. The addition of 2-methylimidazolate to the structure gave ZIF-61 [Zn(Im)1...

Multigene assays for molecular subtypes and biomarkers can aid management of early invasive breast cancer. Using RNA-sequencing we aimed to develop single-sample predictor (SSP) models for clinical markers, subtypes, and risk of recurrence (ROR). A cohort of 7743 patients was divided into training and test set. We trained SSPs for subtypes and ROR assigned by nearest-centroid (NC) methods and SSPs for biomarkers from histopathology. Classifications were compared with Prosigna in two external cohorts (ABiM, n = 100 and OSLO2-EMIT0, n = 103)...

BACKGROUND: Experiential learning through patient care is fundamental to graduate medical education. Despite this, the actual content to which trainees are exposed in clinical practice is difficult to quantify and is poorly characterized. There remains an unmet need to define precisely how residents' patient care activities inform their educational experience.  METHODS: Using a recently-described crosswalk tool, we mapped principal ICD-10 discharge diagnosis codes to American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) content at four training hospitals of a single Internal Medicine (IM) Residency Program over one academic year to characterize and compare residents' clinical educational experiences...

PURPOSE: Medical oncologists have a variety of options for demonstrating proficiency in providing high-quality patient care. Perhaps, the best-known opportunity for demonstrating individual expertise and lifelong learning is the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) maintenance of certification (MOC) program. At the practice level, ASCO has offered the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI) as a means of optimizing cancer care delivery. In this study, we assess the association between active involvement in MOC on an individual basis and whether that individual's practice is involved with the QOPI program...

Polypharmacy in elderly is a public health problem with both clinical (increase of adverse drug events) and economic issues. One solution is medication review, a structured assessment of patients' drug orders by the pharmacist for optimizing the therapy. However, this task is tedious, cognitively complex and error-prone, and only a few clinical decision support systems have been proposed for supporting it. Existing systems are either rule-based systems implementing guidelines, or documentary systems presenting drug knowledge...

The internal medicine in-training examination (IM-ITE) has been traditionally used as a measuring tool to evaluate the base of knowledge of the residents in internal medicine residency programs across the US. Multiple interventions has been applied and studied to increase the first-time passing rate of ABIM, as it is an indicator of each residency program's performance and ranking. Additionally, studies have demonstrated that different learning styles and preferences are a predictor of exam results; however, it is not well known whether certain preferred learning styles are correlated with certain IM-ITE results...
