The use of volume guarantee (VG) on high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) allows to use fixed very low high-frequency tidal volume (VThf), maintaining adequate CO2 removal while potentially reducing the risk of ventilator-induced lung injury. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate that the use of very low VThf can be protective compared with standard VThf on HFOV combined with VG in a neonatal animal model. STUDY DESIGN: Experimental study in 2-day-old piglets with induced respiratory distress syndrome ventilated with two different HFOV strategies combined with VG (10 Hz with high VThf versus 20 Hz with very low VThf at similar PaCO2 )...

We investigate the ion-gel gating of wide bandgap oxide, La-doped SrSnO3 films grown using radical-based molecular beam epitaxy. An applied positive bias resulted in a reversible electrostatic control of sheet resistance over three orders of magnitude at low temperature driving sample from Mott variable range hopping to a weakly localized transport. Analysis of low temperature transport behavior revealed electron-electron interaction and weak localization effects to be the dominant scattering mechanisms. A large voltage window (- 4V ≤ Vg ≤ + 4V) was obtained for reversible electrostatic doping of SrSnO3 films showing robustness of stannate with regards to redox chemistry with electrolyte gating irrespective of the bias type...

This study used a spatially controlled boron doping technique that enables a p-n junction diode to be realized within a single two-dimensional (2D) black phosphorus (BP) nanosheet for high performance photovoltaic application. The reliability of the BP surface and state-of-the-art 2D p-n heterostructure's gated junctions was obtained using the controllable pulsed plasma process technique. Chemical and structural analyses of the boron-doped BP were performed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and the electrical characteristics of a field-effect transistor based on the p-n heterostructure were determined...

The public opinion is ever more interested and worried about possible effects of exposure to VGs (video games) on human life and well-being. Scientific literature shows several evidences highlighting negative outcomes on behavioural, emotive, cognitive and physical health spheres. All these aspects are intrinsically linked to sleep quality and quantity and to date very few studies directly investigated the effects of videogame (VG) exposure on sleep and post-sleep cognitive status. The aim of the present systematic review is to examine the impact that the exposure to VGs can produce on sleep pattern and the consequent post-sleep cognitive abilities...

INTRODUCTION: JUUL is an electronic cigarette (ECIG) with a compact form factor. It is prefilled with a liquid that is advertised to contain a high concentration of nicotine salt. JUUL commands 50% of the US ECIG market share, and its wide popularity with underage users has triggered unprecedented actions by the US FDA. Apart from its nicotine salt-containing liquid and compact form, a salient advertised design feature is a control circuit that limits the heating coil temperature, presumably reducing unwanted toxicants...

Hexokinase is a rate-limiting enzyme that plays pivotal roles in glucose homeostasis and energy metabolism via glucose (Glc) phosphorylation and Glc signaling mediation. Previous investigations have revealed the modulatory role of Hexokinase (Hex) genes involved in proper glucose regulation during insect diapause and embryo development, whereas whether it functions in insect fecundity remains largely unknown. We aimed to explore the relationship between Triazophos (TZP)-induced Hex-1 and fecundity of female Nilaparvata lugens...

Young honey bee workers (0 to 2-3 weeks old) perform tasks inside the colony, including brood care (nursing), whereas older workers undergo foraging tasks during the next 3-4 weeks, when an intrinsic senescence program culminates in worker death. We hypothesized that foragers are less able to react to immune system stimulation than nurse bees and that this difference is due to an inefficient immune response in foragers. To test this hypothesis, we used an experimental design that allowed us to uncouple chronological age and behavior status (nursing/foraging)...

INTRODUCTION: Staphylococcus aureus represents the most common etiologic agent of purulent infections, affecting humans and animals. Escherichia coli is one of the principal causes of infectious diseases, mainly diarrheal diseases due to enterotoxin action. There are many reports indicating that these bacteria are multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we investigated the antimicrobial and modulatory activities of 5-hydroxy-3,7,4'-trimethoxyflavone (VG...

Background: Preoperative planning of total knee arthroplasty is usually performed using knee-centred computed tomography (CT) data sets. The disadvantage of these data sets is having no account of the biomechanical axis of the lower extremity, known as Mikulicz line. It aligns the femoral head to the middle of the talocrural joint. For optimal prosthesis arrangement, the knee CT data set must therefore be brought in congruency with this line of loading to achieve the best results and eliminate rotational malalignments...

Silicon ribbons (SiRi) have been well-established as highly sensitive transducers for biosensing applications thanks to their high surface to volume ratio. However, selective and multiplexed detection of biomarkers remains a challenge. Further, very few attempts have been made to integrate SiRi with complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) circuits to form a complete lab-on-chip (LOC). Integration of SiRi with CMOS will facilitate real time detection of the output signal and provide a compact small sized LOC...

Bacterial β-etherases and glutathione lyases are glutathione-dependent enzymes that catalyze the selective cleavage of β-O-4 aryl ether bonds found in lignin. Their glutathione (GSH) dependence is regarded as major limitation for their application in the production of aromatics from lignin polymer and oligomers, as stoichiometric glutathione amounts are required. Thus, recycling of the GSH cofactor by a NAD(P)H-dependent glutathione reductase was proposed previously. Herein, the use of a whole-cell catalyst was studied for efficient β-O-4 aryl ether bond cleavage with intracellular GSH supply and recycling...

Adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors currently represent the most attractive platform for viral gene therapy and are also valuable research tools to study gene function or establish disease models. Consequently, many academic labs, core facilities and biotech/pharma companies meanwhile produce AAVs for research and early clinical development. Whereas fast, universal protocols for vector purification (downstream processing) are available, AAV production using adherent HEK-293 cells still requires time-consuming passaging and extensive culture expansion before transfection...

Efficient transduction of the retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) is a prerequisite to maximize therapeutic outcomes in any form of gene therapy for optic neuropathies. Whereas subretinal injection of adeno-associated virus 2 (AAV2) has been well-characterized, the serotype, viral load, and promoter combinations that govern RGC transduction efficiency following intravitreal injection remains poorly understood. We evaluated the transduction efficiency of seven AAV2 serotypes (AAV2/1, AAV2/2, AAV2/4, AAV2/5, AAV2/6, AAV2/8, and AAV2/9) for the RGCs at 4 weeks following intravitreal injection in C57BL/6J mice...

Purpose: The most common virus vector used in gene therapy research for ophthalmologic diseases is the adeno-associated virus (AAV) vector, which has been used successfully in a number of preclinical and clinical studies. It is important to evaluate novel AAV vectors in animal models for application of clinical gene therapy. The AAV-DJ (type 2/type 8/type 9 chimera) was engineered from shuffling eight different wild-type native viruses. In this study, we investigated the efficiency of gene transfer by AAV-DJ injections into the retina...
