Herein, we report the clinico-tomographic and histopathological features of four patients with biopsy-proven ocular surface squamous epithelial hyperplasia (OSSEH), a close mimicker of ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN). The mean age at diagnosis was 58 years (median, 60 years; range, 35-77 years). All lesions were unilateral. Isolated corneal plaque was seen in 50% ( n = 2) and nodular lesion at the nasal limbus in 50% ( n = 2). Keratinization was seen in 75% ( n = 3) of lesions and intrinsic vessels in 75% ( n = 3)...

The role of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) in eyelid and orbital malignancies is not well defined. It has been tried with good success in cases of eyelid sebaceous gland carcinoma but there is very limited literature on its role in cases of ocular surface squamous neoplasia. A 54-year-old man presented with gradually increasing swelling of the right upper eyelid for the past 2 years. On examination, a large friable papillary mass was found covering the entire conjunctival surface (T3N0M0). Incisional biopsy from the mass was suggestive of papillary squamous cell carcinoma...

PURPOSE: Ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) comprises a wide spectrum of squamous tumors, from which corneal/conjunctival intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) is the most common one. The classic treatment is complete excision, but recurrence rates are high. Antineoplastic drugs such as mitomycin C (MMC) and interferon alpha 2b (IFNα2b) have been used as adjuvants or as primary treatment. To evaluate the efficacy and safety of topical IFNα2b and MMC in patients with CIN, a phase IIb double-blind clinical trial was performed...

INTRODUCTION: Cancer is heavily influenced by epigenetic mechanisms that include DNA methylation, histone modifications and non-coding RNA. A considerable proportion of human malignancies are believed to be associated with global DNA hypomethylation, with localized hypermethylation at promoters of certain genes. AREA COVERED: The present review aims to emphasize on recent investigations on the epigenetic landscape of ocular surface squamous neoplasia, that could be targeted/explored using novel approaches such as personalized medicine...

Captive fish populations, such as those encompassing aquarium and pet fish, offer significant economic value and are integral to conservation, research, and education. However, these ornamental fish exhibit a reduced ability to protect their ocular surfaces, and our understanding of the ocular diseases that affect them remains limited. Although corneal neoplasms in carp are uncommon, identifying their distinct characteristics is crucial in selecting appropriate therapeutic interventions that aim to preserve vision, prevent the ocular loss, and ultimately ensure the survival of the affected fish...

Yes-associated protein-1 (YAP-1) is a Hippo system transcription factor, which serves as an oncogene in squamous cell carcinoma, and several solid tumors when the Hippo pathway is dysregulated. Yet, the activity of YAP-1 in ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) has not been determined. Here, we investigate the relationship between YAP-1 overexpression and OSSN. Using a cross-sectional study design, we recruited 227 OSSN patients from the University Teaching Hospitals in Lusaka, Zambia. Immunohistochemistry was used to assess YAP-1 protein overexpression in tumor tissue relative to surrounding benign squamous epithelium...

UNLABELLED: Introduction and importance: Ocular Surface Squamous-cell Neoplasia (OSSN) is an infrequent diagnosis whose clinical suspicion assumes great importance and should not be overlooked. The following case-report aims to describe the diagnosis and treatment of a patient with OSSN whose complaints were mild in comparison to the severity of the disease. The chosen surgical technique was paramount for a disease-free outcome while minimizing the scarring effects of surgical removal...

Isolated from Streptomyces caespitosus , mitomycin C (MMC) has various applications in the management of corneal and external disease due to its ability to modulate cellular proliferation. It has been employed in pterygium surgery, ocular surface neoplasia, and refractive surgery. Currently, there is no definite consensus on the treatment protocols for each of the aforementioned applications. Although its benefits in the management of corneal and external diseases are promising, MMC use has potential complications including endothelial cell loss, corneal perforation, scleral melt, secondary glaucoma, iritis, and endophthalmitis...

Ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) is a spectrum of intraepithelial and invasive neoplastic lesions of the conjunctiva and cornea. OSSN is a rare but potentially sight-threatening ocular malignancy that can be challenging to diagnose due to its clinical and histopathological resemblance to benign ocular surface lesions. However, OSSN can lead to significant ocular and systemic morbidity, including vision loss and metastasis. Various risk factors have been identified, including ultraviolet radiation exposure, human papillomavirus infection, and immunosuppression...

INTRODUCTION: The ocular surface may be damaged by several ocular conditions such as chemical trauma, infection, neoplasia or autoimmune disease causing a loss of tissue and function leading to a painful loss of vision. Tissue regeneration is needed to re-establish homeostasis of the ocular surface and to preserve vision. Present replacement strategies have limitations ranging from availability of the same type of tissue to long-term stability. NHSBT currently produces decellularised dermis (DCD) for clinical allografting; comprising a "thin" (up to 1...

PURPOSE: In the past decades, the human amniotic membrane has been largely applied for several surgical and non-surgical procedures. It has been farther demonstrated that both hAM and cornea share similar patterns of expression of structural components of the basement membrane (like laminin 5 and collagen IV) making hAM an useful tissue for ocular surface reconstruction. Since 1996 in fact, amniotic membrane transplantation has been applied to a large number of ocular surface diseases including Stevens-Johnson syndrome, pterygium, corneal ulceration, ocular surface reconstruction after chemical/thermal burns and in the reconstruction after excision of ocular surface neoplasia...

INTRODUCTION: Ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) and pterygia share risk factors and co-exist in only a minority of cases. Reported rates of OSSN in specimens sent as pterygium for histopathological analysis vary between 0% and nearly 10%, with the highest rates reported in countries with high levels of ultraviolet light exposure. As there is a paucity of data in European populations, the aim of this study was to report the prevalence of co-existent OSSN or other neoplastic disease in clinically suspected pterygium specimens sent to a specialist ophthalmic pathology service in London, United Kingdom...

We describe a rare case of ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) with intraocular spread after excisional biopsy which presented as a postoperative anterior chamber (A/C) opacity, initially thought to be a hypopyon. A 60-year-old female with history of a right (OD) conjunctival mass involving the cornea, surgically excised and diagnosed as OSSN, presented 2 months postoperatively with an A/C opacity concerning for infection. The patient was prescribed prednisolone acetate and ofloxacin drops postoperatively; topical chemotherapy was not given...

The authors describe two cases of corneal ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN), presenting at our rural eyecare centre, which were initially misdiagnosed as viral epithelial keratitis and corneal pannus with focal limbal stem cell deficiency. Both the cases were refractory to initial treatment and corneal OSSN was suspected. Anterior segment-optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) revealed a thickened, hyper-reflective epithelium with abrupt transition and an underlying cleavage plane, features typical of OSSN...

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic neoplasia may occur in various types, such as lymphoma, lymphosarcoma, lympholeukemia, and plasmacytoid leukemia. Lymphoma, defined as a malignant tumour of lymphoid tissue, has been found in a number of fish families including Esocidae and Salmonidae. However, the occurrence of lymphoma is rare in those belonging to the Cyprinidae. A final diagnosis of ocular and testicular T-cell lymphoma in the present study was based on the clinical signs, morphology, and texture of the tumour masses in the macroscopic and microscopic examinations...

Conjunctivitis, or inflammation of the mucosal covering the anterior third of sclera and inner eyelid, is a common clinical condition of varied causation. Most cases are self-limited due to infection or allergy and rarely necessitate biopsy. Inflammation of the conjunctiva, however, is one of the most common principal histopathologic diagnoses rendered when the tissue is biopsied. In the context of conjunctivitis, biopsy is usually performed when inflammation is chronic and recalcitrant to therapy, has clinically atypical features, or requires an etiologic diagnosis when one cannot be reached through other laboratory methods...
