Recently, we reported the synthesis of a hydrophilic aldehyde-functional methacrylic polymer ( Angew. Chem. , 2021 , 60 , 12032-12037). Herein we demonstrate that such polymers can be reacted with arginine in aqueous solution to produce arginine-functional methacrylic polymers without recourse to protecting group chemistry. Careful control of the solution pH is essential to ensure regioselective imine bond formation; subsequent reductive amination leads to a hydrolytically stable amide linkage. This new protocol was used to prepare a series of arginine-functionalized diblock copolymer nanoparticles of varying size via polymerization-induced self-assembly in aqueous media...

Nonafluorobutanesulfonyl fluoride (NtF) was developed as a bifunctional additive for enhancing the stability of the lithium metal anode. NtF can yield Nt+ and LiF. The presence of lithiophobic and lithiophilic groups in Nt+ facilitates the uniform deposition of Li+ , while LiF contributes to forming a stable solid electrolyte interphase.

Herein, we report a method for preparing glycosyl benzothiazoles via radical cascade cyclization, in which glycosyl radicals are generated from readily available and bench-stable allyl glycosyl sulfones. This cascade reaction proceeds under simple conditions and tolerates a broad substrate scope in high yield with excellent stereoselectivity. Mechanistic studies support that the reactions proceed via the intermediacy of imidoyl radicals, which attack the appended sulfide unit by a SH 2 process to forge the thiazole ring...

Metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes, which are recognized as state-of-the-art platforms applied in various separation processes, have attracted widespread attention. Nonetheless, to overcome the trade-off between permeability and selectivity, which is crucial for achieving efficient separation, it is important to rationally design and manipulate MOF membrane structure. Given remarkable advances in the past decade, a timely summary of recent advancement in this field has become indispensable. This review introduces major strategies for fabricating oriented MOF membranes, including in situ growth, contra-diffusion method, interface-assisted approach, and laminated nanosheet assembly...

An efficient RuPHOX-Ru catalyzed asymmetric cascade hydrogenation of 3-substituted chromones has been achieved under mild reaction conditions, affording the corresponding chiral 3-substituted chromanols in high yields with excellent enantio- and diastereoselectivities (up to 99% yield, >99% ee and >20:1 dr). Control reactions and deuterium labelling experiments revealed that a dynamic kinetic resolution process occurs during the subsequent hydrogenation of the C=O double bond, which is responsible for the high performance of the asymmetric cascade hydrogenation...

We present a gram-scale synthesis of metallodielectric Janus matchsticks, which feature a gold-coated silica sphere and a silica rod. SiO2 Janus matchsticks are synthesized in one batch by growing amine-functionalized SiO2 spheres at the end of SiO2 rods. Gold deposition on the spheres produces Au-SiO2 Janus matchsticks with an aspect ratio controlled by the rod length. The metallodielectric Janus matchsticks, produced by scalable colloidal synthesis, hold great potential as functional colloidal materials.

Leaf decomposition is a key process in stream ecosystems within forested catchments; it is driven by microbial communities, particularly fungi and bacteria. These microorganisms make nutrients and energy bound in leaves available for wider parts of the food web. Leaf-associated microorganisms are subjected to anthropogenic pressures, such as the increased exposure to nutrients and fungicides associated with land-use change. We assessed the sensitivity of leaf-associated microbial communities with differing exposure histories, namely, from pristine (P) streams, and streams impacted by wastewater (W) and agricultural run-off (vineyards; V)...

Persistent organic pollutants pose a great threat to amphibian populations, but information on the bioaccumulation of contaminants in amphibians remains scarce. To examine the tissue distribution and maternal transfer of organic halogenated pollutants (OHPs) in frogs, seven types of tissues from black-spotted frog (muscle, liver, kidney, stomach, intestine, heart, and egg) were collected from an e-waste-polluted area in South China. Among the seven frog tissues, median total OHP concentrations of 2.3 to 9.7 μg/g lipid weight were found (in 31 polychlorinated biphenyl [PCB] individuals and 15 polybrominated diphenyl ether [PBDE], dechlorane plus [syn-DP and anti-DP], bexabromobenzene [HBB], polybrominated biphenyl] PBB153 and -209], and decabromodiphenyl ethane [DBDPE] individuals)...

Wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent often releases pharmaceuticals like venlafaxine (a serotonin-norephinephrine reuptake inhibitor antidepressant) to freshwater ecosystems at levels causing adverse metabolic effects on fish. Changes to fish metabolism can be regulated by epigenetic mechanisms like microRNA (small RNA molecules that regulate mRNA translation), including regulating mitochondrial mRNAs. Nuclear-encoded microRNAs regulate mitochondrial gene expression in mammals, and have predicted effects in fish...
