To investigate whether the timing of a previous hospital admission for acute heart failure (AHF) is a prognostic factor for AHF patients revisiting the emergency department (ED) in the subsequent 12-month follow-up. All ED AHF patients enrolled in the previously described EAHFE registry were stratified by the presence or absence of an AHF hospitalization admission in the prior 12 months. The primary outcome was 12-month all-cause mortality post ED visit. Secondary end points were hospital admission, prolonged hospitalization (> 7 days), mortality during hospitalization and a 90-day post-discharge adverse composite event (ACE) rate, defined as ED revisits due to AHF, hospitalizations due to AHF, or all-cause mortality...

The comprehensive evaluation and validation of mathematical models for microalgal growth dynamics are essential for improving cultivation efficiency and optimising photobioreactor design. A considerable gap in comprehending the relation between microalgal growth, light intensity and biomass concentration arises since many studies focus solely on associating one of these factors. This paper compares microalgal growth kinetic models, specifically focusing on the combined impact of light intensity and biomass concentration...

The implementation of industrial-scale facilities for microalgae cultivation is limited due to the high operation costs. One of the main problems in obtaining an efficient and long-lasting microalgae culture system is biofouling. The particular issue when developing antibiofouling surfaces for microalgae cultures is that the material must be transparent. The main purpose of this work was to evaluate the antibiofouling efficiency of a non-toxic polydimethylsiloxane-based coating prepared with polyethylene glycol-based copolymer on different photobioreactors at the pilot-plant scale...

The world's oceans are facing plastic pollution, 80 % of which of terrestrial origin flowing from the mismanaged waste of coastal populations and from river discharge. To study the fate of this pollution, the three-dimensional trajectories of neutral plastic particles continuously released for 24 years according to realistic source scenarios are computed using currents from a global ocean-wave coupled model at 14∘ resolution and from a reference ocean-only model. These Lagrangian simulations show that neutral particles accumulate at the surface in the subtropical convergence zones from where they penetrate to about 250 m depth and strongly disperse over 40∘ of latitude...

PURPOSE: Ongoing angiogenesis renders the tumor endothelium unresponsive to inflammatory cytokines and interferes with adhesion of leukocytes, resulting in escape from immunity. This process is referred to as tumor endothelial cell anergy. We aimed to investigate whether anti-angiogenic agents can overcome endothelial cell anergy and provide pro-inflammatory conditions. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Tissues of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) patients treated with VEGF pathway-targeted drugs and control tissues were subject to RNAseq and immunohistochemical profiling of the leukocyte infiltrate...

Epithelial cell organization and the mechanical stability of tissues are closely related. In this context, it has been recently shown that packing optimization in bended or folded epithelia is achieved by an energy minimization mechanism that leads to a complex cellular shape: the "scutoid". Here, we focus on the relationship between this shape and the connectivity between cells. We use a combination of computational, experimental, and biophysical approaches to examine how energy drivers affect the three-dimensional (3D) packing of tubular epithelia...

Algae-bacteria (AB) consortia can be exploited for effective wastewater treatment, based on photosynthetic oxygenation to reduce energy requirements for aeration. While algal kinetics have been extensively evaluated, bacterial kinetics in AB systems are still based on parameters taken from the activated sludge models, lacking an experimental validation for AB consortia. A respirometric procedure was therefore proposed, to estimate bacterial kinetics in both activated sludge and AB, under different conditions of temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, and substrate availability...

Adhesion of microalgal cells to photobioreactor walls reduces productivity resulting in significant economic losses. The physico-chemical surface properties and the fluid dynamics present in the photobioreactor during cultivation are relevant. However, to date, no multiphysical model has been able to predict biofouling formation in these systems. In this work, to model the microalgal adhesion, a Computational Fluid Dynamic simulation was performed using a Eulerian-Lagrangian particle-tracking model. The adhesion criterion was based on the balance of forces and moments included in the XDLVO model...

The vortex flow reactor (VFR) can be used in many chemical engineering applications. This paper assesses its novel use in the purification of monoclonal antibodies from cell broth. To this end, the IgG2a antibody was purified from the unclarified fermentation broth of transgenic mouse 55/6 hybridoma cells. Visual experiments showed that the VFR worked in the laminar vortices flow regime and the vortices displaced slightly faster than the axial flow. The VFR has the advantage of creating two sorts of flows: axial flow to produce the expanded bed and an extra vortex flow to avoid channeling and stabilize the expanded bed, the hydrodynamic behavior of which is plug flow with an experimental Pèclet number higher than 20...
