OBJECTIVE: To locate the recurrent laryngeal nerve fascicles in vagus and investigate the effect of the split-vagus nerve procedure to repair the paralyzed vocal cord in rats. METHOD: The method of dissection and acetylcholinesterase histochemical staining of neural fibers were used to locate the recurrent laryngeal nerve fascicles in vagus. Then 60 SD rats were divided into three groups. In experimental group right recurrent laryngeal nerve were incised and anastomosed to recurrent laryngeal nerve fascicles in vagus by means of the split-vagus nerve procedure...

The objective of the present work was to study the structure of voice disorders in children depending on the methods chosen to diagnose dysphonia. Medical histories of 1,451 children at the age varying from 2 months to 16 years were analysed. All of them were patients hospitalized for the first time between 1997 and 2007 to treat hoarseness caused by vocal cord nodules, functional or mutational dysphonia, chronic laryngitis, vocal cord paresis/palsy, recurring respiratory papillomatosis, vocal cord cystitis, and cicatrical laryngeal stenosis...

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical effect of heterogeneity (cattle) acellular dunal matrix in repairing mucosa defect in laryngeal surgery. METHODS: Eighteen cancer patients with mucosa defect in central vocal area accepted treatment with heterogeneity acellular dunal matrix after surgery. There were two methods to repair mucosa defect. One was simple use of acellular dunal matrix, the second was combined use of acellular dunal matrix and muscle lamella or muscle and tendon film lamella...

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disorder of neuromuscular transmission, usually recognized with ocular complaints or generalized muscle weakness. However, among the 1520 MG cases that had been diagnosed and treated in our hospital in the last 15 years (1990-2005), we have identified 7 MG patients whose initial and prominent complaint was dysphonia and all had been misdiagnosed elsewhere. The diagnoses were confirmed with fibrolaryngoscope and voice analysis employed before and after a positive neostigmine (anticholinesterase) test...

Cricoarytenoid involvement in rheumatoid arthritis has been assessed in 32 patients by combining clinical evaluation, direct fiberoptic laryngoscopy (DFL), and high resolution computerized tomography (CT). Symptoms were inconstant, variable, and rarely prominent. Absence of symptoms does not exclude an involvement. One case presented as an acute respiratory distress. The study showed an unexpected frequency of involvement with 75% of abnormal DFL and 72% of abnormal CT. Semiology of laryngoscopy and CT are described...
