BACKGROUND: Most case reports on laryngeal granuloma formation have described patients after tracheotomy and single-lumen endotracheal intubation. Few studies have investigated vocal cord granuloma formation after double-lumen endotracheal (DLT) intubation. CASE SUMMARY: We report granulation tissue formation on the bilateral vocal cords after DLT intubation in a 45-year-old, 153-cm-tall female patient. Previous imaging reports showed no formation of vocal cord granuloma before DLT intubation...

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess the role of oropharingoesophageal scintigraphy (OPES) in the management of neurological patients, investigating the clinical value of semiquantitative analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We enrolled 39 neurological patients clinically evaluated and scored according to the Dysphagia Outcome Severity Scale (DOSS) scale who underwent fibrolaryngoscopic swallowing examination (FEES) and OPES using a 99mTc-nanocolloid-radioblabelled semiliquid bolus...

INTRODUCTION: The main objective of this study is to estimate the prevalence of persistent dysphonia in hospitalised COVID-19 patients. METHODS: Data were collected from those COVID-19 patients who, during the months of March to April 2020, were hospitalised in ward or intensive care unit at the University Hospital of Fuenlabrada. Patients with dysphonia prior to SARS-CoV-2 were excluded. Informed consent was obtained orally by a telephone call, as well as clinical and epidemiological data...

OBJECTIVE: Unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) can be caused by iatrogenic injury or tumor-induced damage to the recurrent laryngeal nerve. Studies of comprehensive rehabilitation therapies for patients suffering from severe UVFP are limited. The purpose of this case report is to describe an improvement in complete aphonia after comprehensive rehabilitation therapies in a patient with severe UVFP due to a lung tumor. METHODS: An 81-year-old woman with a history of bronchial adenoma had complete aphonia due to compression of the left recurrent laryngeal nerve by the tumor...

Objective: To explore the feasibility and effectiveness of medialization thyroplasty for the treatment of unilateral vocal fold immobility (UVFI). Method: Eight UVFI patients were performed medialization thyroplasty under local anesthesia. We made a window in the thyroid cartilage under local anesthesia, then insert the preformed silicone implant. The paralyzed vocal fold was medialized to make the glottis closed. Fibrolaryngoscope video recording, subjective voice analysis and CT thin slice scan of larynx were done before and after surgery to evaluate closure of vocal cords, improvement of voice and position of implantation...

OBJECTIVES: Medialization thyroplasty is an accepted method for improving non-compensated unilateral vocal cord palsy. Most surgeons decide the depth of penetration of the prosthesis by monitoring the voice changes in the patient during the surgical procedure. General anesthesia with intubation is incompatible with this procedure. Sedation is recommended. In this study we want to objectivize and quantify the influence of sedation and position on voice in order to know if this anesthetic procedure is justified in medialization thyroplasties...

A 30-year-old woman presented with a painless left upper neck swelling for more than a week. Fibrolaryngoscope examination suggested nasopharyngeal carcinoma. FDG PET/CT was performed for an initial staging, which revealed intense activity in the soft tissue mass in the nasopharynx and cervical lymph nodes. However, biopsy from the nasopharyngeal lesion demonstrated tuberculosis.

The patient presented with dry cough, lending, fever and progressive dyspnea for two weeks. The patient had a prior respiratory infection history and the symptoms were not obvious, Early X-ray showed lung infection. Under the fibrolaryngoscope, the lingual surfaces of the epiglottis, epiglottic vallecula, and bilateral vocal cords were covered by yellow pseudomembrane. The motion of vocal cords was normal with poor glottic closure, and no ulcer was noted. Endotracheal mucosa was swelling and congested with an uneven surface, and purulent discharge and pseudomembrane was formed...

The objective of the present study was to analyse results of fibrolaryngoscopic examination of pretumorous and tumorous laryngeal structures in 75 patients aged from 17 to 78 years who underwent repeated laryngeal biopsies to confirm suspected diagnosis of cancer. Vital staining of affected mucosal areas with a 1% methylene blue solution was used for the purpose. It was found that malignant tumours coloured violet as they readily absorbed the dye while its fixation by dysplastic tissue produced all shades of blue depending on the degree of dysplasia...
