Hospital surfaces are heavily contaminated with bacteria, which are a potential source of nosocomial infections. This study was undertaken to identify bacterial communities isolated from neglected hospital surfaces after cleaning routine in a Algerian public hospital. Screening of bacterial contamination in patient bed (PB), reception land-line phones (TF), door handles (DH) and medical equipment (ME) during five months generated 108 inocula . Isolates obtained were identified based on biochemical characteristics and confirmed by analysis of 16S rRNA sequences...

The aim of the present study was to characterize sporadic cases and an outbreak of NDM-like-producing Enterobacteriaceae recovered from hospital settings, in Czechia. During 2016, 18 Entrobacteriaceae isolates including 10 Enterobacter cloacae complex (9 E. xiangfangensis and 1 E. asburiae ), 4 Escherichia coli , 1 Kluyvera intermedia , 1 Klebsiella pneumoniae , 1 Klebsiella oxytoca , and 1 Raoultella ornithinolytica that produced NDM-like carbapenemases were isolated from 15 patients. Three of the patients were colonized or infected by two different NDM-like producers...

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed at assessing the magnitude, distribution, and the antimicrobial susceptibility of the extended spectrum beta-lactamase producing Entrobacteriaceae in the University of Gondar Referral Hospital environments. RESULTS: Out of a total of 384 samples, 14.8% were ESBL producing Entrobacteriaceae, where 42.10% Klebsiella pneumoniae, 35.09% Escherchia coli and 7.01% Proteus mirabilis were the predominant isolates. Most ESBL producing isolates, that is, 24...

OBJECTIVE: To differentiate between Ambler class A, B and D of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae by using simple phenotypic methods that can be carried out in the laboratory without requiring any specialised techniques. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY: Microbiology Department, Army Medical College, NUST, Islamabad, from November 2015 to November 2016. METHODOLOGY: Clinical specimens were subjected to identification of Enterobacteriaceae by colony morphology and API 20 E...

Fermented vegetables are common part of Cambodian diet. The food safety status for these foods has not been investigated. This study was conducted to evaluate the microbiological hazards that contaminated fermented vegetables. A total of 68 samples of fermented vegetables were purchased randomly from five wet markets in Phnom Penh. The conventional culture methods for microbiological analysis were used. Coliform bacteria (Escherichia coli, Cronobactersakazakii, and Enterobacter spp.), opportunistic non-Entrobacteriaceae, Enterococcus spp...

Since its approval, fluoroquinolones have become one of the most prescribed antibacterial agents. Because of its widespread use, serious concerns about the emergence of resistance in Streptococcus pneumoniae, Pseudomonas spp, and entrobacteriaceae, has arisen, especially because of cross-resistance between fluoroquinolones. Huge efforts has been done to identify pharmacokinetic (PK) parameters like maximum serum concentration (Cmax), area under the curve of serum concentrations (AUC) and pharmacodynamic (PD) parameters like the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) or the mutant prevention concentration (MPC), to optimize the use of the new fluoroquinolones, especially against these difficult to treat microorganisms...

The emergence and global spread of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae is of great concern to health services worldwide. These bacteria are often resistant to all beta-lactam antibiotics and frequently co-resistant to most other antibiotics, leaving very few treatment options. The epidemiology is compounded by the diversity of carbapenem-hydrolysing enzymes and the ability of their genes to spread between different bacterial species. Difficulties are also encountered by laboratories when trying to detect carbapenemase production during routine diagnostic procedures due to an often heterogeneous expression of resistance...

PURPOSE: This study was designed to examine the effect of bacterial contamination on in vitro fertilization treatment outcomes. METHOD: In a prospective clinical trial, 152 patients aged 23-38 years, mean 33.3 +/- 4.6, undergoing IVF treatment were selected for this study. During embryo transfer, separate samples were collected for microbial examination from the following sites: the fundus of the vagina, the cervix, the embryo culture medium prior and post-embryo transfer, the tip of the catheter, and the external sheet...

The ecological effect of cefixime on aerobic fecal flora was evaluated in 6 children aged 2 to 5 years given oral cefixime (8 mg/kg/day in two divided doses) for five days. Serial dilutions of stools recovered at baseline (D0), 2 and 5 days after initiation of therapy (D2 and D5) and two days after completion of therapy (DC + 2) were cultured on selective media. Colonies of Enterobacteriaceae, group D streptococci, staphylococci, and Candida were counted. A moderate but significant (p less than 0.01) decrease in the Enterobacteriaceae count was seen, with a fall from 8 log 10 (4...
