A major barrier to a human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection cure is the establishment of a viral reservoir in spite of combined antiretroviral therapy (cART). It is unclear how HIV-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) influence the size of the reservoir in early HIV infection. Twenty-eight subjects with early HIV infection were recruited to receive cART and followed for 48 weeks. HIV reservoirs in peripheral CD4+ T cells measured by cell-associated proviral DNA and viral outgrowth cultures were determined at baseline and after 48 weeks of cART...

Onychomycosis in HIV-infected patients has a prevalence of 20-44% and is more frequently seen with CD4(+) T cell counts ≤450 cel μl(-1). There are case reports of improvement in onychomycosis after initiation of combined antiretroviral therapy (cART), but there are no prospective studies that prove the existence and frequency of this phenomenon. The aim of this study was to evaluate if HIV-infected patients with onychomycosis who begin cART improve and/or cure without antifungal treatment. We included HIV-infected patients with onychomycosis who had not started cART and nor received antifungal therapy during 6 months prior to the study...

OBJECTIVE(S): We investigated the probability of transitioning in or out of the CD3⁺ T-cell homeostatic range during antiretroviral therapy, and we assessed the clinical impact of lost T-cell homeostasis (TCH) on AIDS-defining illnesses (ADIs) or death. DESIGN: Within the Canadian Observational Cohort (CANOC), we studied 4463 antiretroviral therapy (ART)-naive HIV-positive patients initiating combination ART (cART) between 2000 and 2010. METHODS: CD3⁺ trajectories were estimated using a four state Markov model...
