Multiple RNAs have been involved in the progress of heart failure. However, the role of miR-1268a in heart failure is still unclear. The differentially expressed miRNAs in heart failure was analyzed based on GEO dataset GSE104150. AC16 cells were treated with Angiotensin II (Ang II) to explore the role of miR-1268a in heart failure. The web tool miRWalk was used to analyze the targets of miR-1268a. miR-1268a was up-regulated in Ang II-treated AC16 cells. Ang II treatment markedly inhibited cell proliferation, ATP production, fatty acid (FA) uptake and enhanced levels of HF markers BNP and ST2, and oxidative stress of AC16 cells...

Pleasant brush therapies may benefit those with autism, trauma, and anxiety. While studies monitor brushing velocity, hand-delivery of brush strokes introduces variability. Detailed measurements of human-delivered brushing physics may help understand such variability and subsequent impact on receivers' perceived pleasantness. Herein, we instrument a brush with multi-axis force and displacement sensors to measure their physics as 12 participants pleasantly stroke a receiver's forearm. Algorithmic procedures identify skin contact, and define four stages of arrival, stroke, departure, and airtime between strokes...

About half the U.S. adult population suffers from chronic neuromusculoskeletal pain. While its evaluation and treatment are widely addressed by therapies using soft tissue manipulation (STM), their efficacy is based upon clinician judgment. Robust biomarkers are needed to quantify the effects of STM on patient outcomes. Among noninvasive methods to quantify the mechanics of myofascial tissue, most are limited to small (<10 mm2 ), localized regions of interest. In contrast, we develop an approach to optically simultaneously measure a larger (~100 cm2 ) field of deformation at the skin surface...

This study presented the influence of two types of clay: kaolin (Kao) and red clay (RC) on the chemical and physical properties of ceramic specimens when galvanic sludge (GS) is incorporated to encapsulate heavy metals. Samples were obtained of GS from the industrial district of Manaus - Amazonas State, Brazil, and kaolin (Kao), and red clay (RC) from the Central Amazon. A fourth sample was prepared by mixing GS, Kao, and RC in the ratio 1:1:8 (GS + Kao + RC). This mixture was ground, and ceramic specimens were prepared, and heat treated at 950 °C and 1200 °C for three hours for phase detection, compressive strength, leaching of Fe, Ni and Cr metals and life cycle assessment...

Pulmonary fibrosis is a lung disorder affecting the lungs that involves the overexpressed extracellular matrix, scarring and stiffening of tissue. The repair of lung tissue after injury relies heavily on Type II alveolar epithelial cells (AEII), and repeated damage to these cells is a crucial factor in the development of pulmonary fibrosis. Studies have demonstrated that chronic exposure to PM2.5, a form of air pollution, leads to an increase in the incidence and severity of pulmonary fibrosis by stimulation of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in lung epithelial cells...

Spin vacancies in the non-Abelian Kitaev spin liquid are known to harbor Majorana zero modes, potentially enabling topological quantum computing at elevated temperatures. Here, we study the spectroscopic signatures of such Majorana zero modes in a scanning tunneling setup where a non-Abelian Kitaev spin liquid with a finite density of spin vacancies forms a tunneling barrier between a tip and a substrate. Our key result is a well-defined peak close to zero bias voltage in the derivative of the tunneling conductance whose voltage and intensity both increase with the density of vacancies...

This article presents a novel bonding method for chip packaging applications in the semiconductor industry, with a focus on downsizing high-density and 3D-stacked interconnections to improve efficiency and performance. Microfluidic electroless interconnections have been identified as a potential solution for bonding pillar joints at low temperatures and pressures. However, the complex and time-consuming nature of their production process hinders their suitability for mass production. To overcome these challenges, we propose a tailored plating solution using an enhanced copper concentration and plating rate...

Titanium and its alloys are extensively applied in artificial tooth roots because of their excellent corrosion resistance, high specific strength, and low elastic modulus. However, because of their biological inertness, their surface needs to be modified to improve the osteointegration of titanium implants. The preparation of biologically active calcium-phosphorus coatings on the surface of an implant is one effective method for enhancing the likelihood of bone integration. In this study, osteoinductive peptides were extracted from oyster shells by using acetic acid...

Nonunion resulting from early bone resorption is common after bone transplantation surgery. In these patients, instability or osteoporosis causes hyperactive catabolism relative to anabolism, leading to graft resorption instead of fusion. Systemic zoledronate administration inhibits osteoclastogenesis and is widely used to prevent osteoporosis; however, evidence on local zoledronate application is controversial due to osteoblast cytotoxicity, uncontrolled dosing regimens, and local release methods. We investigated the effects of zolendronate on osteoclastogenesis and osteogenesis and explored the corresponding signaling pathways...

BACKGROUND: Acute coronary syndrome and sudden cardiac death are often caused by rupture and thrombosis of lipid-rich atherosclerotic coronary plaques (known as vulnerable plaques), many of which are non-flow-limiting. The safety and effectiveness of focal preventive therapy with percutaneous coronary intervention of vulnerable plaques in reducing adverse cardiac events are unknown. We aimed to assess whether preventive percutaneous coronary intervention of non-flow-limiting vulnerable plaques improves clinical outcomes compared with optimal medical therapy alone...

Neurorehabilitation devices and technologies are crucial for enhancing stroke recovery. These include noninvasive brain stimulation devices that provide repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation or transcranial direct current stimulation, which can remodulate an injured brain. Technologies such as robotics, virtual reality, and telerehabilitation are suitable add-ons or complements to physical therapy. However, the appropriate application of these devices and technologies, which target specific deficits and stages, for stroke therapy must be clarified...

Parent-child relationship dynamics have been shown to predict socioemotional and behavioral outcomes for children, but little is known about how they may affect biological development. The aim of this study was to test if observational assessments of parent-child relationship dynamics (cohesion, enmeshment, and disengagement) were associated with three biological indices of early life adversity and downstream health risk: (1) methylation of the glucocorticoid receptor gene ( NR3C1 ), (2) telomere attrition, and (3) mitochondrial biogenesis, indexed by mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNAcn), all of which were measured in children's saliva...

Barley (1,3;1,4)-β-d-glucanase is believed to have evolved from an ancestral monocotyledon (1,3)-β-d-glucanase, enabling the hydrolysis of (1,3;1,4)-β-d-glucans in the cell walls of leaves and germinating grains. In the present study, we investigated the substrate specificities of variants of the barley enzymes (1,3;1,4)-β-d-glucan endohydrolase [(1,3;1,4)-β-d-glucanase] isoenzyme EII ( Hv EII) and (1,3)-β-d-glucan endohydrolase [(1,3)-β-d-glucanase] isoenzyme GII ( Hv GII) obtained by protein segment hybridization and site-directed mutagenesis...
