Polymer particles capable of dynamic shape changes in response to light have received substantial attention in the development of intelligent multifunctional materials. In this study, we develop a light-responsive block copolymer (BCP) particle system that exhibits fast and reversible shape and color transitions. The key molecular design is the integration of spiropyran photoacid (SPPA) molecules into the BCP particle system, which enables fast and dynamic transformations of polystyrene- b -poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS- b -P4VP) particles in response to light...

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Fully absorbable implants may be an alternative to permanent meshes in the correction pf pelvic organ prolapse (POP) as they may reduce adverse events by promoting tissue regeneration and collagen metabolism. This study was aimed at evaluating the long-term host and biomechanical response to a fully absorbable poly-4-hydroxybutyrate (P4HB) scaffold in comparison with polypropylene (PP) mesh. METHODS: Poly-4-hydroxybutyrate scaffold (n = 16) and PP mesh (n = 16) were surgically implanted in the posterior vaginal wall of parous female Dohne Merino sheep...

In an effort to gain insight into the origin of the effects of end groups on the cloud point temperature (Tcp) as a function of the polymer molar mass of thermoresponsive polymers with lower critical solution behavior in dilute aqueous solutions, we use the Flory-Huggins (FH) theory amended for end groups. The theory was applied to available experimental data sets of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), poly(4-vinylbenzyl methoxytris(oxyethylene) ether) (PTEGSt), and poly( α -hydro- ω -(4-vinylbenzyl)tetrakis(oxyethylene) ether) (PHTrEGSt)...

Scaffolds can be introduced as a source of tissue in reconstructive surgery and can help to improve wound healing. Amniotic membranes (AMs) as scaffolds for tissue engineering have emerged as promising biomaterials for surgical reconstruction due to their regenerative capacity, biocompatibility, gradual degradability, and availability. They also promote fetal-like scarless healing and provide a bioactive matrix that stimulates cell adhesion, migration, and proliferation. The aim of this study was to create a tissue-engineered AM-based implant for the repair of vesicovaginal fistula (VVF), a defect between the bladder and vagina caused by prolonged obstructed labor...

A cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) polymer hydrogel containing magnetic iron oxide nanorods (Fe3 O4 NRs) was prepared for As(III) removal in water. Systematic studies on the performance of these prepared CNC-based composite hydrogels for the removal of As(III) have been undertaken. The maximum adsorption capacity of the CNC-g-PAA/qP4VP (CPqP) hydrogel was 241.3 mg/g. After introduction of Fe3 O4 NRs in the hydrogel, the maximum adsorption capacity of the resulting Fe3 O4 NRs@CNC-g-PAA/qP4VP (FN@CPqP) hydrogel was further improved to 263...

Bioresorbable polymeric sutures are gaining interest from surgeons and patients as they reduce surgical stress and trauma. This study involves two bioresorbable polymers, namely, catgut and poly(4-hyrdorxybutyrate) (P4HB) that are used widely in cosmetic procedures. P4HB barbed sutures are favorably used in rhytidectomy (micro-facelifts) procedures while catgut sutures are widely used for external wound closure after surgical interventions. This study involves the mechanical fabrication of catgut and P4HB barbed sutures and compares their mechanical and anchoring properties...

The traditional polyamide composite nanofiltration membranes have high selectivity and low water permeance, so it is necessary to find strategies to raise the permeance. Herein, a novel polyamide nanofiltration membranes with high permeance were fabricated by coating a loose hydrophilic network-like interlayer, where tannic acid (TA) with pentapophenol arm structure binds to poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) polymer through hydrogen and ionic interactions. The effects of the network-like TA/PSS interlayer on surface morphology, surface hydrophobicity, and the interfacial polymerization mechanism were investigated...

Enhancing the thermoelectric transport properties of conductive polymer materials has been a long-term challenge, in spite of the success seen with molecular doping strategies. However, the strong coupling between the thermopower and the electrical conductivity limits thermoelectric performance. Here, we use polaron interfacial occupied entropy engineering to break through this intercoupling for a PEDOT:PSS (poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(4-styrenesulfonate)) thin film by using photochromic diarylethene (DAE) dopants coupled with UV-light modulation...

Pyroptosis is an effective anti-tumor strategy. However, monometallic pyroptosis biotuners have not been explored until now. Here, we discover for the first time that biodegradable monometallic Al can as a pyroptosis biotuner for tumor therapy. pH-sensitive Al nanoparticles (Al@P) are obtained by equipping polyethylene glycol-b-(poly(methyl methacrylate)-co-poly(4-vinylpyridine), which can exert their effect at the tumor site without affecting normal cells. The H2 and Al3+ release by Al@P in the acidic environment of tumor disrupts the redox balance and ionic homeostasis in tumor cells, thus generating large amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to caspase-1 activation, gasdermin D cleavage, and IL-1β/LDH release, which induces canonical pyroptotic death...

Nanoconfined poly(4-methylstyrene) [P(4-MS)] films exhibit reductions in glass transition temperature (Tg) relative to bulk Tg (Tg,bulk). Ellipsometry reveals that 15-nm-thick P(4-MS) films supported on silicon exhibit Tg - Tg,bulk = - 15 °C. P(4-MS) films also exhibit fragility-confinement effects; fragility decreases ∼60% in going from bulk to a 20-nm-thick film. Previous research found that incorporating 2-6 mol  % 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (EHA) comonomer in styrene-based random copolymers eliminates Tg- and fragility-confinement effects in polystyrene...

The slow Arrhenius process (SAP) is a dielectric mode connected to thermally activated equilibration mechanisms, allowing for a fast reduction in free energy in liquids and glasses. The SAP, however, is still poorly understood, and so far, this process has mainly been investigated at temperatures above the glass transition. By employing a combination of methods to analyze dielectric measurements under both isochronal and isothermal conditions, we were able to quantitatively reproduce the dielectric response of the SAP of different polymers and to expand the experimental regime over which this process can be observed down to lower temperatures, up to 70 K below the glass transition...
