BACKGROUND: Bronchopleural fistula (BPF) is a communication in the form of a sinus tract between the pleural space and the bronchial tree. Chronic bronchopleural fistula (BPF) is a rare but a serious complication of several pulmonary and postoperative conditions. BPF carries a high morbidity and mortality and is associated with prolonged hospital stay and thus high resource consumption. Till date surgical intervention has been the main stay of management of chronic BPF. Our study was carried out to study the efficacy of sealants like Bioglue, Tissel glue and endobronchial devices like coils to close the BPFs through bronchoscopic interventions in those cases which failed to close with the conventional treatment regimen and progressed to chronicity...

BACKGROUND: Craniofacial surgery for facial advancement or correction of severe craniofacial malformations such as orbital hypertelorism, Crouzon's disease, and Apert's syndrome may carry great risk. Postoperative infection after craniofacial surgery is a life-threatening complication. Ascending infection via nasofrontal communication in frontofacial monobloc advancement, intracranial Le Fort III osteotomy, correction of hypertelorism (intracranial approach), and acute trauma of cribriform plate can lead to life-threatening meningitis and meningoencephalitis...

OBJECTIVES: To report our experience with the use of fibrin glue during tubeless percutaneous nephrolithotomy. We addressed the safety of this approach and evaluated its use for any clinical benefit with respect to length of hospital stay, bleeding, analgesic usage, and urinary extravasation. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of 43 patients who underwent tubeless percutaneous nephrolithotomy. In 20 consecutive patients (one bilateral), percutaneous tracts were injected with 2 to 3 mL of Tissel Vapor Heated sealant at the conclusion of the procedure...

Heterologous bone grafts are mostly refused for bone transplantation because of the low osteogenic potency. The remodelling of the heterografts can be improved significantly by application of a fibrin-adhesive-system. Between 1977 and 1979 thirty-five bone defects caused by bone tumors resp. seven times by osteomyelitis were operated on and closed with cancellous Kiel-bone grafts (Braun, Melsungen) soaked thoroughly with fibrin-glue (Tissel/Tissucol TM, Immuno AG, Vienna). Postoperatively there were two infections, but none of them in our osteomyelitic cases...

Treatment of marginal periodontitis may include use of local antibiotics. In the present in vitro study the bioabsorbable materials Surgicel, Tissell, and CollaCote and acrylic strips were examined for release of doxycycline into liquids and residual antibacterial activity of the materials. Pieces of material were incubated in 1 ml of water or human serum which was exchanged every day for 9 days. The concentration of doxycycline in the liquids was measured spectrophotometrically while the residual antibacterial activity of the materials was determined microbiologically...
