OBJECTIVE: To have a scale for pain assessment in the critical burned adult patient. METHOD: A literature review was carried out, and an assessment scale was built with 24 items grouped into 8 categories or dimensions: burn extension, depth, airway burn and/or inhalation injury, facial expression, mechanical ventilation, limb movement, heart rate and painful procedures, and 4 evaluation criteria were applied: sufficiency, clarity, coherence and relevance, on a scale of 1 to 4, from non-compliance with the criterion to full compliance with the criterion...

COVID-19 is a public health problem, so any burn patient who is managed as an outpatient or requires hospital management is a potential carrier of SARS-CoV-2. Burn patients are susceptible to COVID-19 due to the burn and its immunosuppressive effect, the procedures they undergo and other factors related to the burn, which makes them at high risk of contracting the disease and transmitting it, especially to the healthcare team involved in its management. Therefore, it is important to organize strategies in the services that care for burn patients during the COVID-19 pandemic...

INTRODUCTION: COVID-19 pandemic has meant adapting to a different reality, with long-term lockdowns that might cause an increase of burns in children at home. OBJECTIVE: To compare the epidemiological situation of patients admitted to the Corporación de Ayuda al Niño Quemado (COANIQUEM) due to out patient burn injuries management at the beginning of COVID-19 lockdown with the same period the year before. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Analytical and cross-sectional study...

A retrospective analysis of fungal infections was carried out in a health-care burn center between 2011 and 2014 using the patients' medical records (n = 36). Patients ranged from 18 to 87 years of age, with 23 (63.9%) being women. The most prevalent widespread total body surface area affected (TBSA) was 30-50% (p = 0.03), and 71-100% in younger patients, mainly associated with femicide. Fourth degree burns were revealed in 69.4% of the patients while in 50%, inhalation injuries were observed to represent a higher mortality rate (p = 0...

INTRODUCTION: Infections due to bacteremia in burn patients are a common cause of complications and an extended length of stay. Knowing causative microorganisms and identifying associated risk factors allow to reduce infectious complications, morbidity, mortality, and health care expenditure. This study assesses the extent of the association between risk factors and bacteremia in burn patients and identifies the most common microorganisms found in blood cultures. POPULATION AND METHODS: Case-control study conducted at the Burn Intensive Care Unit of Hospital de Pediatría S...

Sphingobacterium multivorum is a non-fermentative gram-negative bacillus that rarely causes human infections. In the medical literature, the few reported cases of infections resulting from S. multivorum usually occurred in patients with an associated comorbidity. We present the first case report, according our knowledge, of a skin and soft tissue infection by S. multivorum infection in a pediatric patient after a burn injury.

OBJECTIVE: Pediatric burns are preventable with legislative and infrastructural changes. Although retrospective audits of many low- and middle-income countries have aided preventative efforts, the epidemiological status of burns in the Caribbean is not known. This study characterizes pediatric burns in the Dominican Republic (DR) and compares these to age-matched North American records captured by the National Burn Repository. METHODS: A retrospective audit of 1600 patients admitted to the Unidad de Niños Quemados Dra...

Introduction: Infections are the most frequent complications in burn patients. Filamentous fungi have an uncertain place within the statistics, since in our media data regarding their prevalence, causal agents and outcome of those who suffer them remain scarce. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of fungal infection by filamentous fungi (IHF) in patients hospitalized in burn intensive care unit (BICU), and to review clinical, epidemiological, microbiological and evolutionary characteristics of these patients and to know the frequency and distribution of the isolated fungi...

Asociacion Pro-Ninos Quemados de Nicaragua (APROQUEN) is a comprehensive burn center that provides a holistic and integrated approach to treating burns. APROQUEN has set the standards internationally with acute treatment for burns, intensive care, reconstructive surgeries, nutritional care, rehabilitation, occupational therapy, and psychological treatment. APROQUEN is excelling within Central and South America with life-saving techniques and quality of care. It is imperative that burn centers in Central America recognize that the treatment of a child with a burn injury surpasses physical care to include psychological treatment for the complete well-being of the child...

Acute and late radiation-induced injury on skin and subcutaneous tissues are associated with substantial morbidity in radiation therapy, interventional procedures and also are of concern in the context of nuclear or radiological accidents. Pathogenesis is initiated by depletion of acutely responding epithelial tissues and damage to vascular endothelial microvessels. Efforts for medical management of severe radiation-induced lesions have been made. Nevertheless, the development of strategies to promote wound healing, including stem cell therapy, is required...

Medicinal plants are highly rich in Cuba and an amount of 179 species have been reported to be used by the population for diuretic purposes, nevertheless, no experimental validation has supported this effect. This study presents the relative importance of the medicinal plant species most widely used for diuretic purposes in two communities of Quemado de Guines Municipality, Villa Clara province. The information was obtained through the application of an interview to 85 inhabitants, from which 80 were random surveys to people with a great knowledge of plants, and five to herbalists and doctors practicing natural medicine...

Drinking arsenic (As)-laden water for a long time affects a population's health and leads to chronic hydroarsenicism, which is associated with an increased incidence of different types of cancer. To determine the potential genotoxic risk associated with different degrees of environmental exposure to inorganic As by way of drinking water, micronuclei (MN) frequency in exfoliated buccal cells was evaluated in Argentina among rural populations of Santiago del Estero and urban populations of Buenos Aires. The exposed group in Santiago del Estero (La Firmeza and Santos Lugares localities) showed a significant increase in MN frequency in epithelial cells compared with controls (Monte Quemado and Urutau localities) (p = 0...

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy of vax-SPIRAL, a Cuban vaccine against leptospirosis, and to provide additional information concerning the safety of this vaccine (which was developed by Cuba's Finlay Institute). METHODS: This phase III efficacy trial of vax-SPIRAL was controlled, randomized, and double blind. The control vaccine used for the trial was Heberbiovac-HB (Heber Biotec, Cuba), a recombinant hepatitis B vaccine. The randomization unit for allocating persons to the study group or the control group were 523 family physician offices in the selected municipalities...
