Fluorophores are powerful visualization tools and the development of novel small organic fluorophores are in great demand. Small organic fluorophores have been derived from the aurone skeleton, 2-benzylidenebenzofuran-3(2H)-one. In this study, we have utilized a model aurone derivative with a methoxy group at the 3' position and a hydroxyl group at the 4' position, termed vanillin aurone, to develop a foundational understanding of structural factors impacting aurone fluorescence properties. The fluorescent behaviors of the model aurone were characterized in solvent environments differing in relative polarity and dielectric constant...

The eradication of multifactorial diseases, such as cancer, requires the design of drug candidates that attack multiple targets that contribute to the progression and proliferation of such diseases. Here, 1,5-diarylpyrazole derivatives bearing vanillin or sulfanilamide are developed as potential dual inhibitors of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)/c-Jun N-terminal kinase 2 (JNK-2) for possible anticancer activity. These derivatives inhibited the growths of DLD-1, HeLa, K-562, SUIT-2 and HepG2 cancer cell lines, with minimum concentration required to inhibit half of the cellular growth (IC50 ) values of 2...

Vanilla production in Guadeloupe is expanding. The main species grown is Vanilla planifolia , but other species such as Vanilla pompona are also present and required by industries. To upgrade the value of vanilla production on this Caribbean Island, this study was performed to evaluate the aromatic specifies of these vanilla species according to the length of the post-harvest period (2 months and 9 months). For this purpose, Vanilla planifolia and Vanilla pompona were compared through scald and scarification transformation processes, as well as two different refining times (T1 and T2)...

Aqueous two-phase systems (ATPS) are considered a new type of green separation system, but their low selectivity to target molecules limits their practical application. In this study, we used surfactant@MWCNT as an adjuvant to improve the selectivity of PEG/(NH4 )2 SO4 ATPS. The surfactants used include Triton X-100 (TX-100), Tween 80, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), sodium dodecyl benzenesulfonate (SDBS), and bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate sodium salt (AOT). Nine aromatic compounds, including syringic acid, vanillin, tryptophan, phenylalanine, tyrosine, mandelic acid, theophylline, theobromine, and cephalexin, were selected as model extracts...

A long-term inflammatory phase of diabetic wounds is the primary cause to prevent their effective healing. Bacterial infection, excess reactive oxygen species (ROS), especially failure of M2-phenotype macrophage polarization can hinder the transition of diabetic wounds from an inflammation phase to a proliferation one. Herein, a chitosan-based hydrogel dressing with the ability of regulating M2 macrophage polarization was reported. The PAAc/CFCS-Vanillin hydrogel dressing was synthesized by one step thermal polymerization of catechol-functionalized chitosan (CFCS), acrylic acid, catechol functional methacryloyl chitosan‑silver nanoparticles (CFMC-Ag NPs) and bioactive vanillin...

Vanillin dehydrogenase (VDH) has recently come forward as an important enzyme for the commercial production of vanillic acid from vanillin in a one-step enzymatic process. However, VDH with high alkaline tolerance and efficiency is desirable to meet the biorefinery requirements. In this study, computationally guided site-directed mutagenesis was performed by increasing the positive and negative charges on the surface and near the active site of the VDH from the alkaliphilic marine bacterium Bacillus ligninphilus L1, respectively...

Insects are covered with free neutral cuticular hydrocarbons (CHC) that may be linear, branched, and unsaturated and vary in their chain length. The CHC composition is species-specific and contributes to the adaptation of the animal to its ecological niche. Commonly, CHCs contribute substantially to the inward and outward barrier function of the cuticle and serve pheromonal communication. They are generally determined by gas-chromatography, a time-consuming method requiring detailed expertize, but it is not available in many laboratories...

The study characterized the aroma-active compounds produced by sesame hulls at three roasting temperatures and analyzed the similarities and differences in the aroma profile of sesame hulls with whole seeds and kernels after roasting. Roasting hulls produced mainly furans, aldehydes, and ketones volatiles. 140 Compounds were identified as aroma-active compounds, including 36 key aroma compounds (odor activity value, OAV ≥ 1). Among them, furanone (caramel-like, OAV = 80), 3-methylbutanal (fruity, OAV = 124), and 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol (burnt, smoky, OAV = 160) gave hulls (180 °C) sweet, burnt, and smoky aroma...

Emergent strategies to valorize lignin, an abundant but underutilized aromatic biopolymer, include tandem processes that integrate chemical depolymerization and biological catalysis. To date, aromatic monomers from C-O bond cleavage of lignin have been converted to bioproducts, but the presence of recalcitrant C-C bonds in lignin limits the product yield. A promising chemocatalytic strategy that overcomes this limitation involves phenol methyl protection and autoxidation. Incorporating this into a tandem process requires microbial cell factories able to transform the p -methoxylated products in the resulting methylated lignin stream...

Treatment against visceral leishmaniasis (VL) presents problems, mainly related to drug toxicity, high cost and/or by emergence of resistant strains. In the present study, two vanillin synthetic derivatives, 3 s [4-(2-hydroxy-3-(4-octyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl)propoxy)-3-methoxybenzaldehyde] and 3 t [4-(3-(4-decyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl)-2-hydroxypropoxy)-3-methoxybenzaldehyde], were evaluated as therapeutic candidates in a murine model against Leishmania infantum infection. Molecules were used pure (3 s and 3 t) or incorporated into Poloxamer 407-based micelles (3 s/M and 3 t/M) in the infected animals, which also received amphotericin B (AmpB) or Ambisome® as control...

The crystallization process is a significant stage in the pharmaceutical industry. During the process of crystallization with cooling, it is possible for a secondary liquid phase to appear before the formation of crystals. This phenomenon is called "oiling out" or liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS). In this article, we explore the oiling-out phenomenon in a binary system of water and vanillin using stability analysis based on Gibbsian surface thermodynamics. To obtain the full picture of oiling out, we investigated three cases: droplet-solute-lean liquid equilibrium ( DLE ), crystal-solute-rich liquid equilibrium ( CL'E ), and crystal-solute-lean liquid equilibrium ( CLE )...

Here, it is successfully designed a Pd/UiO-66-(COOH)2 catalyst by using UiO-66-(COOH)2 as the support with uncoordinated carboxyl groups. This catalyst, featuring a moderate Pd loading, exhibited exceptional activity in RT HDO of vanillin (VAN, a typical model lignin derivative) to 2-methoxyl-4-methylpheonol (MMP), and >99% VAN conversion with >99% MMP yield is achieved, which is the first metal-organic framework (MOF)-based catalyst realizing the goal of RT HDO of lignin derivatives, surpassing previous reports in the literature...

This alarming increase in MRSA infection poses a serious threat to public health globally. Consequently, it is crucial to explore and identify effective drug candidates for combating MRSA.
