Introduction Coronavirus-19 (COVID-19) plays a vital role in viral-induced hypercoagulability through the initiation of a cytokine storm. This mechanism has been found to predispose unvaccinated patients to systemic complications including arterial thrombosis (AT) with poor 30-day amputation-free survival rates. There remains, however, little understanding regarding the incidence in patients who have received a COVID-19 vaccination. This study aims to assess the incidence, management and outcomes of vaccinated patients with COVID-19 who develop thrombotic complications to reduce amputation and direct mortality...

Congenital deformities of the spine lead to an imbalance in the longitudinal growth of the spine. These growth abnormalities may lead to three main patterns of deformity: scoliosis (the most common), kyphosis or lordosis (the least common). Despite the recent improvements in imaging and the routine use of neuromonitoring in the surgical treatment of congenital kyphosis, this surgery may be associated with a high rate of complications such as neurologic deficit, pulmonary thromboembolic events, infection, deep vein thrombosis, implant failure, and dural injury...

Arteriovenous grafts (AVGs) provide vascular access for hemodialysis in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). However, vascular access thrombosis often occurs, requiring frequent reinterventions to maintain access patency. This report describes the successful use of the InThrill Thrombectomy System (Irvine, CA: Inari Medical) for macerating and removing thrombus from an occluded and heavily thrombosed AVG. A 47-year-old male was sent to our institute for a thrombosed right upper extremity arteriovenous access with a HeRO graft (South Jordan, UT: Merit Medical)...

OBJECTIVES: Mechanical valves still require life-long anticoagulation. Preclinical animal testing is a crucial step in the assessment of valves, however the chosen animal model should be carefully considered, and a well-controlled animal model of mechanical valve thrombosis has not been established yet. In this study, a histopathologic comparison was performed to evaluate the representativity of pigs and sheep as large animal models in bileaflet mechanical valve thrombosis research. METHODS: 10 pigs and 8 sheep were implanted with a bileaflet mechanical valve in pulmonary position...

Over the last years, new evidence has accumulated on multiple aspects of diagnosis and management of cerebral venous and dural sinus thrombosis (CVT) including identification of new risk factors, studies on interventional treatment as well as treatment with direct oral anticoagulants. Based on the GRADE questions of the European Stroke Organization guideline on this topic, the new German guideline on CVT is a consensus between expert representatives of Austria, Germany and Switzerland. New recommendations include:• CVT occurring in the first weeks after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination with vector vaccines may be associated with severe thrombocytopenia, indicating the presence of a prothrombotic immunogenic cause (Vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia; VITT)...

Platelets not only participate in thrombosis and hemostasis but also interact with tumor cells and protect them from mechanical damage caused by hemodynamic shear stress and natural killer cell lysis, thereby promoting their colonization and metastasis to distant organs. Platelets can affect the tumor microenvironment via interactions between platelet-related factors and tumor cells. Metastasis is a key event in cancer-related death and is associated with platelet-related factors in lung, breast, and colorectal cancers...

PURPOSE: Preoperative anemia increases postoperative morbidity, mortality, and the risk of allogeneic transfusion. However, the incidence of preoperative anemia in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and its relationship to postoperative outcomes has not been previously reported. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive literature search through PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Sincien, and Embase from inception to July 2023 to investigate the prevalence of preoperative anemia in patients undergoing Total Joint Arthroplasty, comorbidities between anemic and non-anemicpatients before surgery, and postoperative outcomes...

Patients aged ≥65 years not only account for the majority of patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and venous thromboembolism (VTE), they are also at a higher risk of morbidity, mortality, and undertreatment than younger patients. Several age-related physiological changes with effects on drug pharmacokinetics/-dynamics and blood vessel fragility as well as the higher prevalence of geriatric conditions such as frailty, multimorbidity, polypharmacy, fall risk, dementia, and malnutrition make older persons more vulnerable to disease- and anticoagulation-related complications...

Cardiovascular diseases remain the largest cause of death worldwide with recent evidence increasingly attributing the development and progression of these diseases to an exacerbated inflammatory response. As a result, significant research is now focused on modifying the immune environment to prevent the disease progression. This in turn has highlighted the lymphatic system in the pathophysiology of cardiovascular diseases owing, in part, to its established function in immune cell surveillance and trafficking...

Despite treatment with tocilizumab and methylprednisolone, the patient developed deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism in 2022, managed with apixaban. A contrast-enhanced chest tomography revealed no recurrent thromboembolic events. Endovenous glue-induced thrombosis (EGIT) is a known complication of endovenous ablation therapy using cyanoacrylate closure glue to treat saphenous insufficiency, where glue extends into the common femoral vein (CFV), causing partial or complete occlusion. We report a case of class III EGIT (over 50% occlusion of CFV) in a young, healthy female who could not tolerate medical therapy. EGIT was treated with high ligation of the great saphenous vein and CFV patch repair. This is a safe option for patients who cannot tolerate anticoagulation therapy due to complications, physical or psychological limitations, or both...

Pemphigus vulgaris is a chronic autoimmune disease of the skin caused by the production of autoantibodies targeting desmogleins 1 and 3 usually presenting in individuals with an average age of onset of approximately 40 years. A 35-year-old obese, diabetic woman presented with fluid-filled lesions over her body for three months along with erosions and painful ulcers in her mouth and genital area for two months. Iatrogenic venous compression syndrome is defined by extrinsic vein compression due to medical hardware, particularly relevant after joint replacement surgeries. Inserting medical hardware can lead to immediate risks such as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolisms due to local tissue inflammation. The long-term issues include venous insufficiency due to chronic vessel irritation, subsequently causing intimal proliferation and thickening. Despite the existing knowledge of venous compression syndromes, iatrogenic cases are severely underreported...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Blood disorders, such as sickle cell disease, and other clinical conditions are often accompanied by intravascular hemolytic events along with the development of severe coagulopathies. Hemolysis, in turn, leads to the accumulation of Fe(II/III)-protoporphyrin IX (heme) in the intravascular compartment, which can trigger a variety of proinflammatory and prothrombotic reactions. As such, heme binding to the blood coagulation proteins factor VIII (FVIII), fibrinogen, and activated protein C with functional consequences has been demonstrated earlier...

Canine leishmaniosis is a vector-borne disease caused by Leishmania infantum, and clinical manifestations of infection range from absent or severe to fatal and result from immune-mediated mechanisms. In dogs, the most common clinical signs of leishmaniosis include skin lesions and lymphadenomegaly. However, the presence of other nontypical signs has been described, and diagnosing these cases can be challenging. The aim of the present short communication was to describe the impact of the formation of circulating immunocomplexes due to L...

BACKGROUND: Giant cavernous carotid artery aneurysms (>25 mm) are rare (3-5%), with some prone to spontaneous thrombosis (10-20% complete).
