Hereditary TTP (hTTP), termed Upshaw-Schulman syndrome, is an ultra-rare disorder caused by a severe deficiency of plasma ADAMTS13 activity that allows circulation of ultra-large von Willebrand factor (UL-VWF) multimers. The greatest risk for hTTP is in their first days after birth, when 35-50% of patients will have severe hemolysis, jaundice, and thrombocytopenia. It is often fatal without effective treatment. In utero, fetal blood flowing from the pulmonary artery through the ductus arteriosus (DA) to the aorta is under low-shear-force...

PURPOSE: Our aim was to develop a prediction model based on a simple score with clinical, laboratory, and imaging findings for the subtype diagnosis of primary aldosteronism (PA). The contribution of adrenal volumetric assessment to PA subtyping was also investigated. METHODS: Thirty-five patients with adequate cannulation in adrenal venous sampling (AVS) were included. Laboratory data, the saline infusion test (SIT), and the AVS results of patients with PA were retrospectively evaluated...

AIM: Idiopathic non-cirrhotic portal hypertension (INCPH) is a vascular disorder of uncertain origin. Diagnosis can be challenging on liver biopsy. Despite diverse histomorphologic findings documented in literature, studies on the frequency of these findings are lacking. This study aims to assess both the histomorphologic features and the immunoexpression patterns of CD34 and glutamine synthetase (GS) in liver biopsies and searched for their contribution to the pathologic diagnosis of INCPH...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index has been regarded as a reliable surrogate marker of insulin resistance for predicting cardiovascular outcomes. The current study aimed to explore the associations between TyG index with major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). METHODS/PATIENTS: 13,517 patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) from the Kailuan study were included. Patients were divided into quartiles according to the TyG index...

Right ventricular (RV) diastolic stiffness is an independent predictor of survival and is strongly associated with disease severity in patients with precapillary pulmonary hypertension (PH). Therefore, a fully validated echocardiographic method for assessing RV diastolic stiffness needs to be established. This study aimed to compare echocardiography-derived RV diastolic stiffness and invasively measured pressure-volume loop-derived RV diastolic stiffness in patients with precapillary PH. We studied 50 consecutive patients with suspected or confirmed precapillary PH who underwent cardiac catheterization, magnetic resonance imaging, and echocardiography within a 1-week interval...

PURPOSE: Motor neuron disease (MND) causes damage to the upper and lower motor neurons including the motor cranial nerves, the latter resulting in bulbar involvement with atrophy of the tongue muscle. To measure tongue atrophy, an operator independent automatic segmentation of the tongue is crucial. The aim of this study was to apply convolutional neural network (CNN) to MRI data in order to determine the volume of the tongue. METHODS: A single triplanar CNN of U-Net architecture trained on axial, coronal, and sagittal planes was used for the segmentation of the tongue in MRI scans of the head...

Takayasu arteritis (TA) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are two distinct diseases; however, previous studies have reported many cases of IBD-TA coexistence. Additionally, the incidence of IBD in patients with TA is estimated to be significantly higher than the incidence in the general population. Therefore, the two diseases are anticipated to be linked. Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis assesses whether an exposure might causally affect an outcome by using genetic variants inherited randomly at conception, thereby reducing the impact of confounding and reverse causality...

Mistrust is a significant problem for people with psychosis and can interfere with their capacity to engage in psychosocial treatment. In this article, the developmental trajectory of mistrust is outlined, including the impact that attachment disruption, childhood trauma, attributional biases, internalized stigma, and discrimination can have on the person's capacity to form trusting bonds with others. After this review, three elements are described that may allow for the restoration of trust: the therapist's openness to understanding the patient's experience and agenda for therapy, the therapist's effort to honestly disclose their thoughts to encourage dialogue and mutual reflection, and therapist's attempt to promote metacognition through helping the patient develop more complex representations of the minds of others...

Since exhaled ammonia (NH3 ) is one of the metabolic markers of liver and kidney diseases, ammonia visual sensing materials in humid environments have received extensive attention and investigation. Herein, through a tailor-made pore environment provided by metal-organic framework (MOF) materials (CH3 -Cu(BDC)), we achieved NH3 anti-interference sensing with apparent color changing under humid conditions. With methyl (CH3 -) functionalization, CH3 -Cu(BDC) demonstrated a strong response for trace ammonia and showed high selectivity under a humid environment...

Opioid abuse in the United States has been increasing at an alarming rate over the past 20 years. Sex differences are documented for the rates of opioid-related overdoses, abuse patterns, and drug-induced physiological effects. In our previous study, we demonstrated that chronic oxycodone administration in young female rats is associated with neurodegeneration in the brain. Males and females are susceptible to neurodegenerative diseases via differing mechanisms. To investigate whether opioid exposure affects males and females differently, we treated young mice with chronic morphine...

Atherosclerosis is caused by cholesterol accumulation within arteries. The intima is where atherosclerotic plaque accumulates and where lipid-laden foam cells reside. Intimal foam cells comprise of both monocyte-derived macrophages and macrophage-like cells (MLC) of vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) origin. Foam cells can remove cholesterol via apoAI-mediated cholesterol efflux and this process is regulated by the transporter ABCA1. The microRNA miR-33a-5p is thought to be atherogenic via silencing ABCA1 which promotes cholesterol retention and data has shown inhibiting miR-33a-5p in macrophages may be atheroprotective via enhancing apoAI-mediated cholesterol efflux...

Wild animals and their byproducts are sought for nutritional, medicinal, and/or supernatural reasons, with some taxa (e.g., songbirds) being kept as pets. This practice is concentrated in traditional and rural communities, as well as the rural exodus populations in large urban centers, maintained both by cultural preferences and for their role in food safety in part of the rural exodus community. A total of 564 taxa are known to be sold in wet markets in Brazil, with birds, fish, and mammals being the most commonly listed...
