Long-term inflammation, including those induced by bacterial infections, contributes to the superfluous accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), further aggravating this condition, decreasing the local pH, and adversely affecting bone defect healing. Conventional drug delivery scaffold materials struggle to meet the demands of this complex and dynamic microenvironment. In this work, a smart gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogel was synthesized for the dual delivery of proanthocyanidin and amikacin based on the unique pH and ROS responsiveness of boronate complexes...

The compound 6PPD is widely acknowledged for its antioxidative properties; however, concerns regarding its impact on aquatic organisms have spurred comprehensive investigations. In our study, we advanced our comprehension by revealing that exposure to 6PPD could induce cardiac dysfunction, myocardial injury and DNA damage in adult zebrafish. Furthermore, our exploration unveiled that the exposure of cardiomyocytes to 6PPD resulted in apoptosis and mitochondrial injury, as corroborated by analyses using transmission electron microscopy and flow cytometry...

Straw addition markedly affects the soil aggregates and microbial community structure. However, its influence on the profile of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), which are likely associated with changes in bacterial life strategies, remains unclear. To clarify this issue, a soil microcosm experiment was incubated under aerobic (WS) or anaerobic (AnWS) conditions after straw addition, and metagenomic sequencing was used to characterise ARGs and bacterial communities in soil aggregates. The results showed that straw addition shifted the bacterial life strategies from K- to r-strategists in all aggregates, and the aerobic and anaerobic conditions stimulated the growth of aerobic and anaerobic r-strategist bacteria, respectively...

Reactive chlorine species (RCS) are inevitably generated in electrochemical oxidation process for treating high-salinity industrial wastewater, thereby resulting in the competition with coexisting hydroxyl radicals (•OH) for oxidizing recalcitrant organic compounds. Due to the low redox potentials compared to •OH, the role of RCS has been often overlooked. In this work, we developed an electroactive membrane filtration (EMF) system that had a high removal efficiency (99.1 ± 0.5 %) for tetrabromobisphenol S (TBBPS) at low energy consumption (1...

The microbial degradation of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) resins in rivers and lakes has emerged as a crucial issue in the management of microplastics. This study revealed that as the flow rate decreased longitudinally, ammonia nitrogen (NH4 + -N), heavy fraction of organic carbon (HFOC), and small-size microplastics (< 1 mm) gradually accumulated in the deep and downstream estuarine sediments. Based on their surface morphology and carbonyl index, these sediments were identified as the potential hot zone for PE/PP degradation...

Poly(lactide-co-glycolide) and poly(lactic-co-glycolic acids) (PLGAs) play a critical role in the development of commercial long-acting injectable microsphere formulations. However, very little information is available describing the impact of PLGA manufacturer and monomer distribution along the polymer chain (e.g., glycolic blockiness (Rc ) and average lactic block length (LL )) on the degradation and release behavior of PLGA drug carriers in vitro and in vivo. Here, we compared the in vitro and in vivo performance of (a) four leuprolide-loaded microsphere formulations prepared from similar low-molecular-weight acid-capped PLGAs (10-14 kD, i...

We report the synthesis of sulfonated copolyaniline/polysafranin/L-ascorbic acid/Ag@SiO2 fine powdered nanocomposites and investigate the influence of incorporating the dye on their conductivity. The composite was characterized via IR, UV, cyclic voltammetry (CV), electric, dielectric, SEM, TEM, TGA and DSC measurements. Microscopy images revealed intensified spherical particles that were dispersed across the entire surface, and the SiO2 /Ag particles were distributed on the surface. The XRD results exhibited peaks at many 2q values, and their interatomic spacing (d) and crystallite (grain) sizes were calculated...

These polymeric scaffolds were then coated with β-Lactoglobulin (β-LG) at concentrations of 1 mg/ml and 2 mg/ml. Morphological analysis indicated a homogeneous coating of the β-LG layer on the surface of network-like scaffolds. The β-LG-coated scaffolds exhibited improved swelling capacity as a function of the β-LG concentration. Compared to ADA-GEL/PDA scaffolds, the β-LG-coated scaffolds demonstrated delayed degradation and enhanced biomineralization...

In future, global demand for low-cost-sustainable materials possessing good strength is going to increase tremendously, to replace synthetic plastic materials, thus motivating scientists towards green composites. The PLA has been the most promising sustainable bio composites, due to its inherent antibacterial property, biodegradability, eco-friendliness, and good thermal and mechanical characteristics. However, PLA has certain demerits such as poor water and gas barrier properties, and low glass transition temperature, which restricts its use in food packaging applications...

Plastic pollution is primarily caused by the accumulation of petroleum-derived plastics, as they tend to degrade slowly. Sustainable alternatives to these materials are bio-based and biodegradable plastics, such as polylactic acid (PLA). In this study, we assessed how turning aeration and the initial carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio impact PLA biodegradation. The study was carried out under controlled composting conditions, over 180 days, with the aim of decreasing the biodegradation time of the PLA. Apple pomace, rice husk, grape pomace compost, and PLA were used as substrates in the composting process...

CoS with high pseudocapacitance modifies sodium lignosulfonate and graphene connected by hydrogen bonding, benefiting from the constitutive steric structure.
