The aim of this study was to identify serum diagnostic biomarkers associated with the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) during pregnancy. Differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were identified in the control (C), mild (O), and moderate (MO) OSA groups ( n = 3 in each group). Bioinformatics analysis was conducted to identify the underlying functions, pathways, and networks of the proteins. Receiver operating characteristic curves were used to assess the diagnostic value of the identified DEPs. The enzyme-linked immunoassay was performed to detect serum levels of the complement C1r subcomponent (C1R) and alpha-2-macroglobulin (A2M) in 79 pregnant women with OSA (mild OSA [ n = 32]; moderate OSA [ n = 29], and severe OSA [ n = 18]) and 65 healthy pregnant women without OSA...

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a respiratory sleep disorder associated with cardiovascular diseases, is more prevalent in men. However, OSA occurrence in pregnant women rises to a level comparable to men during late gestation, creating persistent effects on both maternal and offspring health. The exact mechanisms behind OSA-induced cardiovascular diseases remain unclear, but inflammation and oxidative stress play a key role. Animal models using intermittent hypoxia (IH), a hallmark of OSA, reveal several pro-inflammatory signaling pathways at play in males, such as TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB/MAPK, miRNA/NLRP3, and COX signaling, along with shifts in immune cell populations and function...

PURPOSE: The detection of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in pregnant women in early-mid gestation is logistically difficult. Accurate alternates to polysomnography (PSG) in early pregnancy are not well identified. We compared the agreement between Apnealink Air (AL) and existing screening questionnaires to PSG in pregnant women ≤ 24-week gestation. METHODS: Pregnant women (≤ 24-week gestation) underwent AL at home plus attended PSG in any order, completed within 7 days where practicable...

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) combined with heart failure (HF) has become a serious disease that threatens human health. Therapeutic interventions targeting OSAS have been shown to improve outcomes in patients with HF, so the identification of severe OSAS in HF is critical. Carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125) is associated with inflammation and volume overload. The levels of CA125 are elevated in the serum of patients with HF and might be further elevated in patients with HF and OSAS...

Objective: To evaluate the clinical utility value of questionnaires of Berlin, STOP, STOP-Bang (SBQ), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) in screening obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) in pregnant women of different trimesters. Methods: Consecutive pregnant women at high risk for OSAS were enrolled from January, 2021 to April, 2022 at the obstetric clinic of Peking University People's Hospital. They completed questionnaires of Berlin, STOP, SBQ, ESS and also underwent an overnight polysomnography (PSG). To evaluate the accuracy of questionnaires of Berlin, STOP, SBQ, ESS, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive values, negative predictive values and the area under the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve of these questionnaires in pregnancy across trimesters (Pregnancy 1-15 weeks was the first stage, pregnancy 16-27 weeks was the second stage, and pregnancy 28-40 weeks was the third stage) were calculated...

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a recognized risk factor for gestational hypertension, yet the exact mechanism behind this association remains unclear. Here, we tested the hypothesis that intermittent hypoxia (IH), a hallmark of OSA, induces gestational hypertension through perturbed endothelin-1 signaling. Pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to normoxia (control), mild IH (mIH, 10.5% O2), or severe IH (sIH, 6.5% O2) from gestational day 10-21. Blood pressure (BP) was monitored. Plasma was collected and mesenteric arteries were isolated for myograph and protein analyses...

Globally, more than 200 million women become pregnant each year, most of whom receive medications despite limited information on their safe use during pregnancy. The paucity of drug safety data on pregnant and breastfeeding women stems from the routine exclusion of this population from clinical trials due to scientific, ethical, regulatory and legal concerns. Consequently, at the time of initial drug approval, there may be scant safety data to inform the drug benefit-risk balance to the mother, foetus, or infant...

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) during pregnancy can negatively affect both the mother and the baby. Our main goal is to show whether there is an association between OSA during pregnancy and delivering small for gestational age (SGA) infants. This systematic review was conducted according to the PRISMA 2020 statement using three databases: MEDLINE via PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Library. All databases were last accessed on 1 June 2023. The implemented systematic literature search identified 744 articles. After excluding reviews, meta-analyses, book chapters, case reports, and letters, 47 studies were analyzed, 18 of which finally met the inclusion criteria...

Sleep disorders are highly prevalent during pregnancy and significantly affect women's health and quality of life. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is one of the most common metabolic complications during pregnancy and constitutes a significant risk factor for both mother and fetus in the short and the long term. While the association between sleep disorders and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is indisputable, it is not clear whether there is a link between sleep disorders and GDM. The aim of this article was to investigate the association between sleep disorders and GDM and whether the treatment of sleep disorders may prevent GDM development...

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) during pregnancy is characterized by episodes of intermittent hypoxia (IH) during sleep, resulting in adverse health outcomes for mother and offspring. Despite a prevalence of 8-20% in pregnant women, this disorder is often underdiagnosed. We have developed a murine model of gestational OSA to study IH effects on pregnant mothers, placentas, fetuses, and offspring. One group of pregnant rats was exposed to IH during the last 2 weeks of gestation (GIH). One day before the delivery date, a cesarean section was performed...
