INTRODUCTION: The Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and its associated health restrictions have harmed the population psychologically. We aimed to compare the post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and Quality of Life (QoL) in older French patients with cancer to the younger ones. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This longitudinal multicenter study named COVIPACT began in April 2020 during the first French lockdown and has included 579 outpatients receiving treatment for a solid or hematological malignancy...

BACKGROUND: Young and middle-aged cancer patients in intensive care unit (ICU) often suffer from stress and pressure, causing huge physical and mental damage. Currently, there is few research on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among young and middle-aged cancer patients in ICU in China, and the psychological status of patients who have experienced both cancer development and ICU stay is still unclear. AIM: To explore the risk factors for PTSD in young and middle-aged patients with cancer in ICU...

OBJECTIVE: The rather broad definition of medical trauma within DSM-IV has contributed to long-lasting debates on the applicability of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in oncological patients and its differentiation from Adjustment Disorder (AjD) which results from non-traumatic critical life events. The DSM-5 criteria have introduced a narrower definition of medical traumatization. However, studies on updated prevalence rates in cancer patients are missing. METHODS: Within a cross-sectional study, we assessed hematological cancer survivors using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5...

BACKGROUND: More intense cyclones are expected in the future as a result of climate change. A comprehensive review is urgently needed to summarize and update the evidence on the health effects of cyclones. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to provide a systematic review with meta-analysis of current evidence on the risks of all reported health outcomes related to cyclones and to identify research gaps and make recommendations for further research. METHODS: We systematically searched five electronic databases (MEDLINE, Embase, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science) for relevant studies in English published before 21 December 2022...

This review aims at RCT's of psychedelics used in the treatment of depression and PTSD. Psilocybin has shown an antidepressant effect in cancer patients that was sustained at 6- and 12-months follow-up. The effect of psilocybin was comparable to escitalopram in one study. Ketamine has shown effect for the treatment of resistant depression. Phase 2 and 3 trials have shown the effect of MDMA on PTSD. No serious adverse events were reported in controlled settings, but larger studies are needed to establish safety and long-term effects...

Pediatric medical traumatic stress (PMTS) is a set of children's and their parents' psychological and physiological responses to pain, injuries, serious illnesses, and other experiences with the medical environment. Pediatric cancer patients have the highest prevalence of PMTS as the illness its treatment involve a set of stressors that trigger many negative psychological reactions. The current study examined the difference in levels of traumatic stress in children with cancer and their parents due to medical factors (type of cancer, outcome, duration, and intensity of treatment, time since diagnosis, relapse, and hospitalization in ICU)...

PURPOSE: Psychiatric disorders and cancer are both common, and comorbidity has detrimental impacts on cancer outcomes. Previous studies focus on affective disorders which arise after cancer diagnosis, not on the impact of psychiatric disorders on cancer risk. We investigate the association between psychiatric disorders and subsequent gastrointestinal cancer in a large cohort in Germany. METHODS: This case-control study used secondary data (electronic medical records) from the national IQVIA Disease Analyzer database...

BACKGROUND: Symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and adjustment disorder (AjD) are common in hematological cancer patients as they face severe stressors during their serious disease and often intensive treatment, such as stem cell transplantation (SCT). Aims of the present study were to provide frequency and risk factors for PTSD and AjD based on updated diagnostic criteria that are lacking to date. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, hematological cancer patients were assessed for stressor-related symptoms via validated self-report questionnaires based on updated criteria for PTSD (PCL-5) and AjD (ADMN-20)...

BACKGROUND: Few modifiable risk factors for epithelial ovarian cancer have been identified. We and other investigators have found that individual psychosocial factors related to distress are associated with higher risk of ovarian cancer. The present study examined whether co-occurring distress-related factors are associated with ovarian cancer risk. METHODS: Five distress-related factors were measured repeatedly over 21 years of follow-up: depression, anxiety, social isolation, widowhood, and, in a subset or women, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)...

The use of cannabidiol (CBD) for therapeutic purposes is receiving considerable attention, with speculation that CBD can be useful in a wide range of conditions. Only one product, a purified form of plant-derived CBD in solution (Epidiolex), is approved for the treatment of seizures in patients with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, Dravet syndrome, or tuberous sclerosis complex. Appraisal of the therapeutic evidence base for CBD is complicated by the fact that CBD products sometimes have additional phytochemicals (like tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)) present, which can make the identification of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) in positive studies difficult...

AIMS AND METHOD: This narrative review updates the evidence base for cancer-related post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Databases were searched in December 2021, and included EMBASE, Medline, PsycINFO and PubMed. Adults diagnosed with cancer who had symptoms of PTSD were included. RESULTS: The initial search identified 182 records, and 11 studies were included in the final review. Psychological interventions were varied, and cognitive-behavioural therapy and eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing were perceived to be most efficacious...

The enzyme 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11β-HSD-1) is an NADPH-dependent reductase, responsible for the activation of cortisol by reducing cortisone. Resveratrol (RES), a type of natural polyphenol, is reported to be able to slow the progression of cancer and cardiovascular disease and improve the health of mice on a high-calorie diet. In this article, we applied molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the possibility of binding RES to 11β-HSD-1. The 11β-HSD-1:RES complex is stable on the μs time scale, and backbone RMSD-based clustering identified three conformations...
