ERIC, the Enteropathogen Resource Integration Center (www.ericbrc.org), is a new web portal serving as a rich source of information about enterobacteria on the NIAID established list of Select Agents related to biodefense-diarrheagenic Escherichia coli, Shigella spp., Salmonella spp., Yersinia enterocolitica and Yersinia pestis. More than 30 genomes have been completely sequenced, many more exist in draft form and additional projects are underway. These organisms are increasingly the focus of studies using high-throughput experimental technologies and computational approaches...

REVIEW
W P Achterberg, C van Campen, A M Pot, A Kerkstra, M W Ribbe
The objective of the paper is to review the effects of the implementation of the Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI) on process measures (quality of care plans and staff satisfaction) and outcome measures (health problems and quality of life) in nursing homes. All available publications on the effects of the RAI were included in the review. The most positive effects of the RAI were found in improvements in the comprehensiveness and accuracy of the care plans. As regards outcome quality, the RAI method had most positive effects on the health condition of nursing home residents with diminished physical and mental functioning...

OBJECTIVES: (1) To assess the prevalence and the consequences of chronic verbal aggression, physical aggression, financial mistreatment, and neglect in a community-based sample; (2) to investigate the circumstances that led to the abuse and the ways in which the victims handled the problem. DESIGN: Prevalence was assessed in a population-based sample of 1797 older people living independently in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. In a follow-up study 1 year later, the victims were questioned again about the background and consequences of the abuse...

We describe a plasmid, pXen, designed for the optimized expression of proteins fused to glutathione-S-transferase (GST) in Xenopus laevis oocytes and embryos. The Xenopus model system permits the biochemical analysis of signaling pathways and analysis of embryo phenotype in response to manipulation of proto-oncogene expression. pXen is a modified pSP64T vector which contains an SP6 RNA polymerase promoter followed by the translational initiation sequence of Xenopus beta-globin and the glutathione binding domain of GST...

COMPARATIVE STUDY
P Descheemaeker, C Lammens, B Pot, P Vandamme, H Goossens
The increasing problems encountered with enterococcal nosocomial infections and the intrinsic and acquired resistance of the enterococci to different antimicrobial compounds highlight the need for a rapid identification technique. Enterococcus faecalis is readily identified by biochemical tests, but species differentiation within the Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus gallinarum species groups is less well established. In the present study, 66 strains representing the most prevalent human enterococci were used to develop a PCR-based species-specific identification protocol...

Previous studies showed circadian rhythm disturbances in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Rest-activity rhythm disturbances manifest themselves through a fragmentation of the rhythm, a weak coupling with Zeitgebers, and high levels of activity during the night. The aim of the present study was to investigate which factors contribute to the presence of these disturbances. Therefore, several rest-activity rhythm, constitutional, and environmental variables were assessed in a heterogeneous group of 34 patients with Alzheimer's disease, including presenile and senile patients living at home or in a nursing home, as well as in 11 healthy controls...

PURPOSE: To assess an independent relationship between shift work and serum lipid levels. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey. SETTING: Two plants of northern France: a chemical one and a nuclear power station. PARTICIPANTS: All the shift workers of the chemical plant and of one part of the nuclear station. One hundred nine persons were selected, 25 were excluded or absent during the study, and 11 refused to participate. Day workers matched with shift workers according to age, educational level, birthplace, and occupational physical activity level served as controls; 109 were selected, 26 were excluded or absent, and 10 refused to participate...
