A carbohydrate (CHO) solution consumed before exposure to hypoxia has been reported to reduce arterial oxygen desaturation at rest. The purpose of this study was to determine whether this effect occurred during exercise and when the CHO load is part of a meal. Eleven male subjects (mean age 20.1 ± 1.8 years, BMI 24.3 ± 2.4 kg m(2)) consumed either a high-CHO (2,340 kJ, 70 % CHO, 12 % protein) or an isoenergetic high-protein (35 % CHO, 48 % protein) breakfast meal 60 min before being exposed to 15 min of hypoxia (F(I)O(2) = 13...

Nonobtrusive pulse rate measurement using a webcam is considered. We demonstrate how state-of-the-art algorithms based on independent component analysis suffer from a sorting problem which hinders their performance, and propose a novel algorithm based on constrained independent component analysis to improve performance. We present how the proposed algorithm extracts a photoplethysmography signal and resolves the sorting problem. In addition, we perform a comparative study between the proposed algorithm and state-of-the-art algorithms over 45 video streams using a finger probe oxymeter for reference measurements...

In Buerger's disease conservative treatment is questionable. Arterial reconstructive surgery is not feasible and sympathectomy has limited role. Progression of the disease invariably leads to amputation. Ilizarov's method increases the vascularity of the ischaemic limb. Retrospective analysis of Ilizarov's technique in 60 patients was done. Immediate results took into account rest pain, colour of skin, venous return, temperature, pulse oxymeter measured oxygen saturation and ulcer/amputation stump wound healing...

INTRODUCTION: Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) constitutes a new major public health problem because of its several pathophysiologic consequences such as cognitive disorders, excessive daytime sleepiness with risks of traffic accidents, cardiovascular implications, and decrease of quality of life. The necessity of a gold-standard polysomnography to ensure an accurate diagnosis implies an expensive, technical and time-consuming examination. Thus, it seems logical to develop new systems so as to diagnose SAS and to make it possible to detect apnoeas/hypopnoeas easily during sleep even at home...

BACKGROUND: the six minute walking distance test (6MWD) is widely used to evaluate exercise capacity in several diseases due to its simplicity and low cost. AIM: to establish reference values for 6MWD in healthy Chilean individuals. MATERIAL AND METHODS: we studied 175 healthy volunteers aged 20-80 years (98 women) with normal spirometry and without history of respiratory, cardiovascular or other diseases that could impair walking capacity...

In Hungary, the Institute of Health Sciences at Semmelweis University was the first institution to introduce patient simulation-based practical training of non-physician professionals. Before introducing this novel educational methodology, students could only practice particular examinations and interventions on demonstration tools. Using the simulator they can also follow and analyze the effects of the interventions that have been made. The high fidelity, adult Human Patients Emergency Care Simulator (HPS-ECS, Medical Education Technologies Incorporation, Sarasota, Florida, USA) is particularly suitable for acquiring skills related to the management of various emergency situations...

BACKGROUND: Radial arterial access is becoming increasingly popular for coronary angiography and angioplasty. The technique is, however, more demanding than femoral arterial access, and hemostasis is not care-free. A quality assurance program was run by our nursing staff, with patient follow-up, to monitor radial arterial access implementation in our laboratory. METHOD: In 973 consecutive patients, both a hydrophilic sheath and an inflatable bandage for hemostasis were used...

Eisenmenger's syndrome is defined as the process in which a left-to-right shunt due to an atrial (ASD) or ventricular septal defect (VSD) in the heart causes increased pulmonary blood flow, leading to pulmonary hypertension, which in turn, ultimately results in increased pressure in the right side of the heart and reversal of the shunt to right-to-left. Therefore, anesthetic management of Eisenmenger's syndrome is often difficult. We described a case of paracervical block for dilatation and curettage in a parturient with Eisenmenger's syndrome in this report...

A novel calibration method using support vector machines regression (SVMsR) of pulse oximetry was proposed and attempted. Conventional calibration method of pulse oximetry that based on an optical density ratio of transmitted visible red light and infrared radiation whereas a proposed method here was not based on the optical density ratio directly. In theory, conventional calibrations using the ratio can be considered as a technique for nonlinear problem: nonlinear relation between two optical densities (red and IR) and oxygen saturation could be linearized by the ratio calculation...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The transportation of patients from the operating room to the post-anesthetic recovery room without supplemental oxygen is a common practice, since oxygen supplementation is used only in patients at high risk of developing hypoxemia. The objective of this study was to evaluate the incidence of changes in oxygen saturation during this transportation and to identify the risk factors associated to the development of hypoxemia. AIM: This paper is a report of a study conducted to compare the effects of two different oxygen delivery methods on both patient peripheral oxygen saturation and patient satisfaction. BACKGROUND: One of the most serious problems encountered in the early postoperative period is hypoxemia. Giving oxygen to patients in the perioperative period reduces the incidence of hypoxemia. Oxygen is generally delivered to patients through oxygen masks or nasal cannulae. Previous studies have shown that face masks and nasal cannulae are effective in the early postoperative period...

We report an anesthetic management of the ex-utero intrapartum treatment (EXIT) procedure performed in a fetus with giant epignathus due to laryngeal atresia at 28 weeks' gestation. Anesthesia of the mother was induced with thiamylal and vecuronium, and maintained with 4% sevoflurane in 100% oxygen before delivery. Sevoflurane provided excellent uterine relaxation. To maintain the arterial pressure, the patient received acetate Ringer and ephedrine 4mg. After hysterotomy, a pulse oxymeter and an ultrasound transducer were applied to monitor fetal Sp(O2) and heart rate...
