Muskuloskeletal Disorder

Bary Berghmans
INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) in women is a complex syndrome. Pain sensation and intensity often do not correspond with the identified lesion location but are felt elsewhere, leading to muskuloskeletal and myofascial disorders and sexual dysfunction (SD). Although physical aspects are prevalent, they are often underdiagnosed and undertreated due to lack of understanding regarding its origin and distribution. Frequently, patients experience pelvic pain as psychological distress resulting in physical complaints, leading clinicians to prescribe medication or surgical intervention to correct or alleviate these symptoms, often with insufficient results...

Wnt/β-catenin signalling components was shown to affect bone cells function including chondrocytes.Secreted Dkk1, a potent osteogenesis inhibiting factor mediates bone loss in diseased bones by suppressing the biological actions of Wnt proteins. In addition, increased Dkk1 signalling inhibits chondrogenesis in new bone formation. Recent findings also show there exists a cross-talk between the chondrocytes and the cells of the osteoblast lineage, which are the most affected cell types in muskuloskeletal disorders...

The authors analyse 493 hospital cases in 356 workers from the construction industry, came to observation for musculoskeletal disorders (average age 48, 2 years, SD 9; work seniority 32, 2 years, SD 9, 7; work seniority in construction industry 27, 3 years, SD 12, 4). The evaluation was required in 305 subjects (85.7% of the sample) to investigate one or more suspected WMDS; in 51 subjects (14.3% of the sample) to express an opinion on fitness to work or residual work capacity. Investigations led to diagnosis of 479 musculoskeletal disorders; the districts most affected are spine and upper limb...

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the application of sonography at the polyclinic of the Olympic/Paralympic village during the Olympic/Paralympic Games. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 759 consecutive patients who underwent sonography at the ultrasound division of the polyclinic in the Olympic/Paralympic village from July 20, 2008, to September 20, 2008. Prevalence of emergency sonography after sports injury and non-sports-related urgent conditions during the games was analyzed...

The use of hand-held power tools can result in absorption of significant vibration energy by the worker's hand and arm, and is a causal factor in the development of various muskuloskeletal disorders (MSD's) such as carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAYS). A novel brace incorporating vibration damping materials is proposed that could reduce this energy absorption, resulting in lower incidence of vibration-related occupational MSD's. The National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) has identified this type of injury as a priority research area...

Muskuloskeletal tissue includes bone, cartilage, ligament, skeletal muscle and tendons. These tissues malfunction either due to a natural injury, trauma, or a disorder. In all cases natural regeneration needs to be enhanced by medication and, in many instances, by surgery. Surgical techniques are limited to suturing, autografts or allografts. Tissue engineering stems from the challenge presented by the limited resources for natural implants and the ineffectiveness of previous curing techniques. The challenge in tissue engineering resides in the design of a functional bioreactor that would: (1) house the engineered construct under sterile conditions; and (2) provide the appropriate stimuli that would result in a neotissue with biochemical and biomechanical properties comparable to in situ tissue...

A group of 25 female individuals, who had been admitted to the University Hospital with the diagnosis of anorexia nervosa (AN) 3 to 10 years before, was seen for a follow-up visit in the hospital. These women got a psychiatric exploration to detect a present eating disorder. Moreover, parameters of the muskuloskeletal interaction were determined on the non-dominant forearm. Bone mineral content (BMC) of the radius was measured by pQCT and maximal grip force was evaluated by the use of a dynamometer. Eating disorders were present in 12 females...

On occasion of the Centenary of the "Clinica del Lavoro Luigi Devoto", its researchers suggested that awareness of its historical identity and scientific development should constitute the basis for the future of the Institution. The directors of the Institute who have succeeded one to the other over the years have left a vivid report of the vast amount of work developed in several research fields and also of the original results achieved with significant impact on the scientific community and on society. Content analysis of "La Medicina del Lavoro" allowed us to shed light on strong bonds existing between manufacturing techniques, work organization and health, in the different political and social periods in which they developed...

UNLABELLED: Different Results at Different Times of Questioning? In 1994 a quality assurance programme for the German medical rehabilitation system was introduced by the national association of pension funds. One of its five parts focussed on patients' satisfaction and health effects. Both domains were to be assessed by postal questionnaires. The first section of the instrument enquired about patients' perceptions and evaluations of both rehabilitation structures and processes. It is well known that satisfaction surveys tend to underestimate the true level of criticism due to social desirability bias...

The spectrum of rheumatic diseases includes syndromes characterized solely by musculoskeletal pain and discomfort. Indeed, muskuloskeletal pain and dysfunction are experienced by almost everyone in the course of a lifetime. The rheumatic syndromes are diverse and often of unclear etiology. For many years, psychosomatic theories have been advanced as an attempt at explanation, especially in the case of chronic polyarthritis. This article discusses the meaning of risk factors viewed as relevant to the course of back pain syndromes in particular...

PURPOSE: To prospectively assess rheumatic manifestations of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease in a municipal hospital clinic population in which intravenous drug use was the most common risk factor for HIV infection. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with documented HIV infection were evaluated for rheumatic disease using a standardized questionnaire and examination. Patients with fibromyalgia were compared with HIV-infected patients without fibromyalgia and with fibromyalgia patients without known risk factors for HIV infection...
