OBJECTIVE: : This study aims to examine the clinical characteristics, cognitive functions, and levels of insight, which are thought to be related to disability in schizophrenia patients, and to determine which variable will guide the clinician to predict the disability. METHODS: : Participants were 102 individuals with schizophrenia aged 18-60. All participants completed the social functioning scale and the Beck cognitive insight scale. To determine the severity of disability, World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2...

Post-schizophrenic depression (PSD) increases the morbidity, mortality, and health burden in patients with schizophrenia. However, treatment of PSD is challenging due to the lack of substantial evidence of standard clinical practice. This study was aimed at comparing the efficacy and safety of low-dose amisulpride versus olanzapine-fluoxetine combination (OFC) in PSD. This was a randomized controlled trial conducted in sixty patients with PSD fulfilling the eligibility criteria. Recruited patients were randomized to receive either amisulpride at low dose (i...

Suicide is a common cause of death in all phases of schizophrenia spectrum disorder, particularly in the youngest patients. Clinical measures have demonstrated limited value in suicide prediction, spurring the search for potential biomarkers. The causes of suicidal behaviour are complex, but the immune system seems to be involved as it reflects or even causes mental suffering. We aimed to identify cytokines with associations to suicidality in a sample of patients with symptoms of active psychosis. Patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorder (N = 144) participating in a semi-randomized antipsychotic drug trial (the BeSt InTro study) were assessed with the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and the Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia (CDSS) at eight visits across 12 months...

INTRODUCTION: This study aims to translate and investigate the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Clinical Assessment Interview for Negative Symptoms (CAINS), which has additional features compared to other scales in assessing negative symptoms in patients with schizophrenia. METHODS: The Turkish version of CAINS was constructed upon an initial translation to Turkish, and an English back translation of the scale was later conducted. The patients diagnosed with schizophrenia (n=79) according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) diagnostic criteria were administered the Turkish version of CAINS, the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), the Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms (SANS), the Scale for the Assessment of Positive Symptoms (SAPS), the Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia (CDSS), the Clinical Global Impression Scale (CGI), the Global Assessment of Functioning Scale (GAF) and the Simpson-Angus Extrapyramidal Side Effects Assessment Scale (SAS)...

BACKGROUND: Stress plays an important role in the etiology of schizophrenia. However, the mechanisms by which chronic physiological stress and perceived stress relate to the clinical features of schizophrenia may differ. We aimed to elucidate the relationships among chronic physiological stress indexed by allostatic load (AL), perceived stress, and clinical symptoms in individuals with first-episode schizophrenia (FES). BACKGROUND: Depression in patients with schizophrenia worsens the course of the disease by increasing the risk of suicide, by complicating the clinical picture of the disorder, and by reducing the quality of the social functioning; its treatment is difficult, since monotherapy, even when involving modern antipsychotics, does not always prove successful. While the prescription of additional antidepressants (ADs) can improve the likelihood of a better outcome, the effectiveness of such augmentation in many cases is yet to be proven...

Although various models have been proposed to explain the development of depression in schizophrenia, studies investigating related psychological factors are scarce and the studies that have been done usually focus on only a small number of possible factors. BACKGROUND: Treating depressive symptoms in patients with schizophrenia is challenging. While transcranical Dicrect Current Stimulation (tDCS) improved other core symptoms of schizophrenia, conflicting results have been obtained on depressive symptoms. Thus, we aimed to expand current evidence on tDCS efficacy to improve depressive symptoms in patients with schizophrenia. METHODS: A double-blind RCT was performed with patients randomized to 2 mA active-tDCS or sham-tDCS (15 daily sessions) with a bilateral bipolar-nonbalanced prefrontal placement (anode: left Dorsolateral prefrontal cortex; cathode: right orbitofrontal region)...

There is no established treatment for patients with clozapine-resistant schizophrenia (CRS). Clozapine augmentation strategies with antipsychotics or others substances are effective in comparison with placebo while and Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) showed to be effective in comparison with treatment as usual (TAU) but not with placebo (sham-ECT). It is well known that abnormal reward processing is a characteristic feature of various psychopathologies including schizophrenia (SZ). Reduced reward anticipation has been suggested as a core symptom of SZ. The present study aims to evaluate the event-related oscillations (EROs) delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma in patients with SZ during the Monetary Incentive Delay (MID) task, which elicits the neural activity of reward processing. Twenty-one patients with SZ and twenty-two demographically matched healthy controls were included in the study...

Sarcosine (N-methylglycine), a glutamatergic modulator, reduces the primary negative symptoms of schizophrenia. These beneficial changes might be mediated by trophic factors such as epidermal growth factor (EGF). We assessed associations between initial serum EGF levels or changes in serum EGF levels and symptom severity during the addition of sarcosine to stable antipsychotic treatment and thereby evaluated the associations between glutamatergic modulation, clinical changes and peripheral EGF concentrations...

Neuroinflammation contributes to the pathophysiology of various mental illnesses including schizophrenia. We investigated peripheral inflammatory cytokines as a biomarker for predicting symptomatic remission in patients with first-episode schizophrenia. The study included 224 patients aged 15-60 years who fulfilled the criteria for schizophrenia spectrum disorder with a treatment duration ≤6 months. Serum levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) -α, interferon-γ, interleukin (IL)-1α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, and IL-12 were measured...

OBJECTIVE: Anhedonia is a common symptom of depression, but is also a negative symptom of schizophrenia. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of vortioxetine on anhedonia in patients with schizophrenia. METHODS: A total of 120 patients with schizophrenia in remission who met inclusion criteria were randomized 1:1 by the envelope method into intervention and control groups. All participants in both groups were divided into three subgroups based on the antipsychotic therapy they were receiving (olanzapine, risperidone, or aripiprazole)...

Exposure to early life trauma increases the risk of psychopathology later in life. Here we investigated if ANK3 mRNA levels influence the relationship between childhood trauma experiences and clinical characteristics in mental disorders. A sample of 174 patients with bipolar disorder and 291 patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorder were included. Patients were diagnosed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV, and childhood trauma was assessed using the childhood trauma questionnaire.
