Morphological, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural but also clinical and prognostic differences between multiple types of mesenchimal (stromal, nonepithelial) tumors of the gastrointestinal tract prompted us the remembrance of an anecdotic series of sixteen observations of mesenchymal "nonstromal" gastrointestinal tumors (MNSGIT) encountered in four decades of surgical practice. The diagnosis was mainly established on clinical grounds (dyspepsia, pains, digestive hemorrhage or obstruction, palpable tumor) - some lesions being incidentally discovered - and confirmed by radiology, endoscopy, intraoperative exploration and microscopic pathology examination which revealed 9 schwannomas, three leiomyomas, two lipomas, fibroma and "mixoma" one case each...

A 54-year-old woman with history of septal atrial mixoma surgically treated and drug-refractory supraventricular tachyarrhythmia underwent catheter ablation of macro-reentry areas near the pericardial patch placed to repair an interatrial defect. The use of ablative therapy has been successful to cure this arrhythmia.

The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of mast cells in a series of odontogenic tumors. Forty-five cases of odontogenic tumors were investigated using immunohistochemistry for mast cell triptase, and differences between groups were statistically evaluated. Mast cells were present in 96% of odontogenic tumors. Mast cells present in solid ameloblastoma were observed in the tumor stroma surrounding more solid and follicular epithelial islands, with or without squamous metaplasia. The odontogenic mixoma showed few mast cells...

Vaccinia virus (Vv) is a member of the genus Orthopoxvirus, one of seven genera included in the family Poxviridae. Most of these viruses infect vertebrates (Orthopoxvirus, Avipoxvirus, Capripoxvirus, Leporipoxvirus, Suipoxvirus, and Parapoxvirus), but one genus, Entomopoxvirus, infects insects. It is interesting to note that the Fibroma and Mixoma viruses of the leporipoxvirus genus cause tumors in their hosts (rabbits), these being the only tumorigenic viruses in the family (1,2).

Recent research performed in the Cardiology Research Center (CRC) and on-going studies reviewed in the article confirm the hypothesis suggested by CRC investigators about the role of a damaging action of some reactions in the body. The damage to the cell and subcell structures is done by such substances as malonic dialdehyde, methylglyoxal, active oxygen forms (nitric oxide and others). This damage can be used in diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. A group of peptides, neuropeptide FF and its receptors in particular, are studied for regulation of the vascular tonicity and perspectives of practical application...

We report a case of an asymptomatic patient in whom a right atrial mass was fortuitously documented by echocardiography few months after a transcatheter radiofrequency catheter ablation for recurrent AF. No masses were seen in the cardiac chambers before the ablative procedure, raising important diagnostic and decision-making issues. The patient was referred to the surgeon and a diagnosis of right atrial myxoma was made.

Lipomatous hypertrophy of the interatrial septum (LHIS) is an increasingly recognized heart condition characterized by fatty deposits in the interatrial septum with sparing of the fossa ovalis. Its distinctive characteristic features by imaging techniques, benign nature, and the fact that most patients remain asymptomatic, has limited the need for histological confirmation and operative intervention in most cases. In this report, we describe two cases of LHIS where cardiac surgical intervention was indispensable: in the first patient, due to the presence of an additional left atrial tumour found out as mixoma and in the second, to relief a superior vena cava obstruction together with bypass grafts for severe coronary artery disease...

INTRODUCTION: Patients benefit, reduction of treatment costs, as well as providing data needed for the science progress, are only some of the items that implicate the importance of preoperative evaluation of operative risk and mortality. In order to determine the risk profile of adult cardiac patients and identify the mortality in different procedures, a set of multicentric clinical studies has been carried out in the past decade. A study involving 19030 patients in 128 centers from 8 European countries was conducted at the end of 1995...

BACKGROUND: Although clonal origin is an essential step in the comprehension of neoplasias, there have been no studies to examine whether odontogenic tumours are derived from a single somatic progenitor cell. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clonal origin of odontogenic tumours. METHODS: Fresh samples of seven ameloblastomas, two odontogenic mixomas, two adenomatoid odontogenic tumour, one calcifying odontogenic cyst, one calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumour (CEOT) and six odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) of female patients were included in this study...

Rhabdomyosarcoma was diagnosed in 9 patients, angiosarcoma--in 11, leyomyosarcoma--in 6, malignant mixoma--in 4, fibrosarcoma, chondrosarcoma and liposarcoma--each as a single observation. Special attention was paid to guarantee the maximal radicalism in the tumor excision, what made it necessary in 8 observations to perform additive surgical procedures, such as interatrial septum and atrial walls plasty, plastic operations on cardiac valves and the valves prostheses...

A 68-year-old woman came to our observation with a clinical history of isolated systolic hypertension poorly controlled by the combination of ramipril 5 mg and hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg o.d. The ECG showed sinus rhythm with heart rate of 68 beats per minute and signs of left ventricular hypertrophy without strain. Further investigation included an echocardiogram that showed normal left and right cavities and normal cardiac valves. At the level of the posterior wall of the right atrial (RA) an apparent smooth, bean-like tumor, having a thin pedicle, was identified as a RA mixoma...

Primary cardiac tumors are rare. Mixomas are the most common among them; 75% are located in the left atrium, 20% in the right atrium, and the rest in the ventricles. The seldom appear in atrio-ventricular valves. Recidivant mixoma are also rare, appearing in 1-5% of all patients that have undergone surgical treatment of a mixoma. In this paper we present our experience with a female patient, who 8 years after having been operated of a left atrial mixoma, began with symptoms of mild heart failure. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed recurrence of the tumor, and was therefore subjected to a second open-heart surgery from which she recovered without complications...

It presents a 59 years old woman with atypical symptoms, which orientated the diagnostic thinking during one year to a reccurrent pneumonitis, bronchial asthma, colagenosis, interstitial pulmonary fibrosis and so on. The appearance of pulmonary edema determined a couple of cardiologic exams which came to obiectivate as the main cause, the existence of a left atrial mixoma who was invaginated in left mitral cusp. Surgical intervention permitted not only specific determination of histological type of tumor, but lead to healing of the patient...

Ten were in the left atrium, 5 near the fossa ovalis, 3 at the base of the atrial septum, 1 at the inferior wall and 1 on the anterior leaflet of mitral valve, 3 were in the right atrium, 1 of these was accompanied with a myxoma at the apex of left ventricle. The ECG and the chest X-ray were normal in 9 and in 8 patients, respectively. In 3 patients, the diagnosis was occasionally made by routine 2-dimensional echocardiography...

A clinically silent hepatocellular carcinoma presenting as a mixoma of the right atrium is described. Intra-atrial growth has been reported in advanced, clinically manifested cases of liver carcinomas in African and Japanese subjects, but very occasionally in Caucasian people. Our case further suggests that this occurrence should also be considered in Western Countries.
