BACKGROUND: Best practices for online course design aim to improve teaching and learning by emphasizing the relationship between a course's learning outcomes and all other parts of the course, from assessments to technology to student interaction with peers and instructors. The transition and expanded opportunities to online or hybrid learning in nursing education demonstrate the need for quality online learning experiences. METHOD: A university initiative to ensure high quality remote courses focused on expanding Quality Matters (QM) certification of hybrid and online courses, which ensures that a course has been developed according to standards for online learning...

BACKGROUND: The challenges to conducting oral health studies involving older people in long-term care facilities (LTCFs) must be debated. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate researchers' perceptions and experiences while conducting an epidemiological survey on oral health among older individuals residing in LTCFs. METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted involving six researchers who utilized field diaries to record their impressions during data collection through interviews (older individuals (or their proxies), caregivers, and LTCF coordinators) and oral examinations of the older people participants...

This retrospective descriptive study sought to explore the lived experiences of Black mothers with HIV navigating HIV medical care while parenting dependent children. Six themes were generated from the semi-structured interviews conducted with mothers (N = 9) related to motherhood, interactions with health care systems and providers, coping, social support, HIV self-management, and HIV prevention. Findings suggested that supportive interpersonal relationships with HIV health care providers, HIV nondisclosure to family and friends, and social network support, inclusive of health care providers, were protective factors in achieving optimal treatment adherence and viral suppression...

BACKGROUND: About 11 million Americans are caregivers for the 6.7 million Americans currently living with dementia. They provide over 18 billion hours of unpaid care per year, yet most have no formal dementia education or support. It is extremely difficult for clinicians to keep up with the demand for caregiver education, especially as dementia is neurodegenerative in nature, requiring different information at different stages of the disease process. In this digital age, caregivers often seek dementia information on the internet, but clinicians lack a single, reliable compendium of expert-approved digital resources to provide to dementia caregivers...

BACKGROUND: Existing research highlights the role of social determinants of health, such as education and housing, in predicting health outcomes and the challenges that arise from deficiencies in these areas, often linked to societal inequities. Gender and income are recognized as social determinants of health, yet the complexities of their interplay, particularly for women with low income seeking health and social services in Canada, need more exploration. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates how gender and income intersect to affect access to health and social services for Canadian women with low income...

In 2005, Olle ten Cate introduced the concept of Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) in the assessment of medical trainees in competency-based postgraduate training (ten Cate, 2005). Over the past two decades, EPAs have found their way into mainstream competency-based education and training for almost all health care professions, from medicine to pharmacy, nursing, dentistry, veterinary dietetics, and the physician assistant field (ten Cate, 2020). Although the terms 'entrustable' and later, 'entrustability', were defined as neologisms at the time, the concept of trust was not unfamiliar to clinicians who are continually required to manage risks in the inherently complex health care business and education (Damodaran et al...

Promoting adherence to HIV care among persons with HIV (PWH) is a key component to address the rising HIV epidemic in the Philippines. HIV care adherence is a complex process that may change throughout an individual's life course or "journey" living with HIV. This qualitative study aimed to explore the HIV care adherence journey of PWH. Maximum variation sampling was used in selecting 12 PWH and 3 health care providers for in-depth online interviews analyzed using thematic analysis. The four themes that emerged to describe the HIV care adherence journey are integration, relation, navigation, and manifestation...

Obesity and malnutrition affect many patients with osteoarthritis and can predispose patients to worse outcomes after total joint arthroplasty (TJA). However, these modifiable risk factors can be addressed in preoperative optimization programs driven by nurse navigators. Our aim is to provide resources and recommendations for nurse navigators when addressing obesity and malnutrition among TJA patients. In addition to discussions with nurse navigators regarding obesity and malnutrition, a literature review was conducted to assess the current practice standards for management...

PURPOSE: Patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) experience significant symptom burden from combination chemotherapy and radiation (chemoradiation) that affects acute and long-term health-related quality of life (HRQOL). However, psychosocial impacts of HNC symptom burden are not well understood.
