We report a 23-year-old woman admitted post cyclist versus heavy goods vehicle accident in December 2014. This was the second case the life-saving procedure, that is, resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) was performed on at the roadside. This advanced procedure was performed due to the extensive haemorrhage from this patient's complex pelvic fracture . As a result of REBOA, the patient consequently lost her left lower limb and underwent a variety of complex pelvic and lower limb surgeries...

BACKGROUND: In patients with a transfemoral amputation socket-related problems are associated with reduced prosthetic use, activity, and quality of life. Furthermore, gait asymmetries are present that may explain secondary complaints. Bone-anchored prostheses (BAPs) may help these patients. Two types of BAP are available, screw and press-fit implants. Rehabilitation following surgery for a press-fit BAP is poorly described. PURPOSE: To describe a rehabilitation program designed to minimize compensation strategies and increase activity using a case-report of an active, 70-year-old man with a traumatic transfemoral amputation who had used a socket prosthesis for 52 years and received a press-fit BAP [Endo-Exo Femoral Prosthesis - EEFP]...

OBJECTIVE: A lower limb amputation is a major event for a patient with many questions arising for him and his family. Individual and environmental factors could influence patient's quality of life and adaptation to amputation. Most of the time brochures concern post operative care after limb amputation (surgery type, stump medical care, prosthetics…). Rehabilitation is often only briefly dealt with these brochures. OBJECTIVES OF THIS STUDY: (1) To write a brochure specifically concerning rehabilitation for lower limb amputees...

OBJECTIVE: Traumatic lower limb amputation is rare in pediatric population, and surgeons always try limb salvage. But rarely, later amputation occurred when the traumatic limb is painful. It is a difficult and irreversible decision needed a multidisciplinary approach. We report how we managed a programmed trans-tibial amputation on 13-years-old boy, 20 months after a foot trauma. The rehabilitation of amputees requires a multi-discipline approach. Within the work of the team, physiotherapy plays a central role both in terms of the technical skills made available to the patient, as well as in terms of the psychological-motivational support offered to the amputee during treatment. The pre-prosthetic phase of rehabilitation is the beginning of a complex rehabilitative process during which starts with an assessment of the general clinical condition of the patient and their residual capacities, so as to develop personalised rehabilitative strategies based upon the needs of the amputee...

Physiotherapists play a pivotal role within the multidisciplinary team and offer patients physical and psychosocial rehabilitative care. Amputations of the upper extremity are severely debilitating, current treatments support very basic limb movement, and patients undergo extensive physiotherapy and psychological counselling. There is no prosthesis that allows the amputees near-normal function. With increasing number of amputees due to injuries sustained in accidents, natural calamities and international conflicts, there is a growing requirement for novel strategies and new discoveries. Advances have been made in technological, material and in prosthesis integration where researchers are now exploring artificial prosthesis that integrate with the residual tissues and function based on signal impulses received from the residual nerves...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Phantom limb pain (PLP) can be disabling for nearly two thirds of amputees. Hence, there is a need to find an effective and inexpensive treatment that can be self administered. Among the non-pharmacological treatment for PLP, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) applied to the contralateral extremity and mirror therapy are two promising options. However, there are no studies to compare the two treatments. The purpose of this study is to evaluate and compare mirror therapy and TENS in the management of PLP in subjects with amputation...

The physiotherapy management of elderly, ischaemic below knee amputees is often compromised by delayed and/or complicated wound healing. Such patients are often unable to ambulate on a prosthesis for prolonged periods. Problems concommitant with immobilization such as weakness, contractures, and decreased morale tend to arise. This pilot study investigated the efficacy of incorporating a shaped Dunlopillo insert into a temporary prosthetic socket to allow the at risk group to ambulate as soon as the sutures were removed regardless of the state of wound healing...

The first report on the use of the Sinusoidal current in the treatment of pain was given to the Physiotherapy Society of South Australia in February, 1964. Twenty-six patients were treated; they all had post-traumatic pain with well defined local tenderness and/or hypersensitivity, and, in the case of the amputees, some phantom pains and jactitations as well. This method of treatment was described in the Australian Journal of Physiotherapy, December, 1964.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Individuals with amputations are a core group in Australian rehabilitation units that have a long index length of stay. The Repatriation General Hospital (RGH) offers general rehabilitation services to the population of Southern Adelaide (a population of 350,000) and includes an on-site prosthetic manufacturing facility. Using a physiotherapy database at the RGH, we sought to answer the following questions: What are the demographic and clinical characteristics of patients admitted for lower limb prosthetic rehabilitation over 15 years? What are the times to rehabilitation outcomes? How have these changed over 15 years with changes in service delivery? METHODS: This paper is a retrospective observational study using a physiotherapy clinical database (1996-2010) of 531 consecutive individuals with lower limb amputation at one South Australian hospital (RGH)...

UNLABELLED: Lower limb amputees typically have reduced mobility which affects their ability to perform daily tasks and to successfully reintegrate into community life. A major goal of rehabilitation for amputees is to improve quality of life (QOL). This study therefore focussed on QOL and functional independence for persons with lower limb amputations secondary to diabetes. OBJECTIVE: To determine the QOL and functional independence of lower limb diabetic amputees one to three years post amputation, using variables such as age, gender and amputation level...

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Several pediatric tumors require mutilating procedures in order to be treated effectively. Although the pain caused by the surgery is usually of a transient nature, the perception of pain in the amputated limb may persist. This prolonged pain, which is often refractory to pain-killing medication, may severely affect the patient's quality of life. The phenomenon of phantom limb pain (or phantom limb syndrome) has been investigated using neurological, neurophysiological and psychopathological approaches...

The purpose of this study was to compare the functional status of children with acquired and congenital lower limb loss after 3 weeks and 6 months of prosthetic rehabilitation. Forty-one children aged between 8 and 17 years participated in the study. The children underwent prosthetic fitting, prosthetic training and rehabilitation after physiotherapy evaluations. Gait patterns and weight bearing values were assessed, and the Amputee Mobility Predictor (AMP) Questionnaire was applied. The congenital group had better gait patterns, weight bearing values and AMP scores in the initial assessment and after 3 weeks...
