Bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI) is a narrow band gap semiconductor which can be driven by visible irradiation. In order to efficiently separate photo-generated carriers and utilization of visible light, a facile solvothermal approach was used to synthesize a novel AgI loading BiOI 3D hierarchical composite (AgI-BiOI). The AgI-BiOI with Ag and Bi molar ratio of 1:8 (AgI-BiOI (1-8)) showed great enhancement for photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) with pseudo-first degradation rate constant about 3.7 or 14...

Accumulating evidence has elucidated that hyperlipidemia is closely associated with an increasing prevalence of CVDs (cardiovascular diseases) because of endothelial dysfunction. In the present study, we investigated the effect and mechanism of PU (Punicalagin), a major ellagitannin in pomegranate, on endothelial dysfunction both in vivo and in vitro. In vivo, PU significantly ameliorated hyperlipidemia-induced accumulation of serum triglyceride and cholesterol as well as endothelial and mitochondrial dysfunction of thoracic aorta...

Viral infection triggers host defenses through pattern-recognition receptor-mediated cytokine production, inflammasome activation, and apoptosis of the infected cells. Inflammasome-activated caspases are known to cleave cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS). Here, we found that apoptotic caspases are critically involved in regulating both DNA and RNA virus-triggered host defenses, in which activated caspase-3 cleaved cGAS, MAVS, and IRF3 to prevent cytokine overproduction. Caspase-3 was exclusively required in human cells, whereas caspase-7 was involved only in murine cells to inactivate cGAS, reflecting distinct regulatory mechanisms in different species...

In this paper, 41 hybrid compounds containing diaryl-1,5-diazole and morpholine structures acting as dual COX-2/5-LOX inhibitors have been designed, synthesized and biologically evaluated. Most of them showed potent antiproliferative activities and COX-2/5-LOX inhibitory in vitro. Among them, compound A33 displayed the most potency against cancer cell lines (IC50  = 6.43-10.97 μM for F10, HeLa, A549 and MCF-7 cells), lower toxicity to non-cancer cells than celecoxib (A33: IC50  = 194.01 μM vs...

BACKGROUND: Impaired diastolic heart function has been observed in persons with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and/or with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, it is unclear whether NAFLD fibrotic progression, i.e., non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, poses an independent risk for diastolic dysfunction in T2DM. We investigated the association between liver fibrosis and left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction in T2DM. METHODS: We analyzed 606 patients with T2DM, aged ≥50 years, who had undergone liver ultrasonography and pulsed-wave Doppler echocardiography...

The effect of intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation (IABC) varies, and it is unknown whether this is due to a heterogeneous coronary physiological response. This study aimed to characterise the coronary and left ventricular (LV) effects of IABC and define responders in terms of their invasive physiology. Twenty-seven patients (LVEF 31 ± 9%) underwent coronary pressure and Doppler flow measurements in the target vessel and acquisition of LV pressure volume loops after IABC supported PCI, with and without IABC assistance...

Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is the essential infectious agent causing porcine circovirus-associated disease (PCVD) in pigs and one of the important viruses that severely jeopardize the swine husbandry industry. PCV2 elicits the unfolded protein response (UPR) via activation of the PERK pathway, and its capsid protein (Cap) has also been found to induce UPR with subsequent activation of apoptosis. The open reading frame 5 (ORF5) protein is a recently discovered non-structural protein, and its function in PCV2 pathogenesis remains unknown...

Dynamically and independently tunable absorbers based on multilayer metal-graphene metamaterials are proposed to achieve multi-band and ultra-wide-band absorbing properties at mid-infrared frequencies. Dual-band, triple-band and even more bands absorption can be arbitrarily customized by etching the appropriate number of tandem gold strips in each meta-molecule, as well as stacking multiple metal-graphene layers. Through tuning the Fermi energy level of the graphene in each metal-graphene layer separately, the multiple absorption resonances can be dynamically and independently adjusted...

We investigate a new type of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2 )-doped sol-gel glass saturable absorber (SA) fabricated by sol-gel technique. The reagents used for the sol-gel glass contain Tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), ethanol, water, and hydrochloric acid. Different from the traditional ways of fabricating SAs, the MoS2 in our method is encapsulated by inorganic sol-gel glass instead of polymer compound with low laser damage resistance, which greatly increases the optical damage threshold of MoS2 SA. The MoS2 -doped sol-gel glass as an SA is experimentally demonstrated in a passively mode-locked ytterbium-doped fiber laser (YDFL)...

Microcystin-LR is a cyclic heptapeptide hepatotoxin produced by harmful cyanobacteria. A panel of microRNAs containing miR-451a were found to be significantly changed in normal human liver cells HL7702 after exposure to microcystin-LR (MC-LR) in our previous study. However, the functions of miR-451a in hepatotoxicity induced by MC-LR remained unclear. The study aimed to investigate the impacts of miR-451a in HL7702 cells following treatment with 5 or 10 μM MC-LR. The comet assay indicated that MC-LR can influence Olive tail moment (OTM) in HL7702 cells...

Pseudo-allergic reactions occurred in patients administered drugs for the first time, seriously threaten man's survival. Due to the frequent reports of pseudo-allergic reactions to Danshen injection, in our previous study, isosalvianolic acid C in Danshen injection was found to trigger off mast cell degranulation. However, the direct involvement and the mechanisms underlying pseudo-allergic reactions have not been elucidated. In this study, the pseudo-allergic reactions induced by isosalvianolic acid C were confirmed by an ear swelling assay, a hindpaw swelling and extravasation assay in vivo and mast cell degranulation assays in vitro...
