Understanding and interpreting medical literature through critical thinking and applying this knowledge to evidence-based practice is an integral part of surgical training. Participating in research accelerates this process; however, young doctors' involvement in research may be suboptimal. Our aim was to provide young surgeons with recommendations on how to properly engage in surgical research. An online twitter conversation focused on recommendations about how a young physician can succeed in research was undertaken...

BACKGROUND: All nurses have responsibilities to enculturate evidence-based practice (EBP) and translate and implement research findings into nursing care, practices, and procedures. AIMS: To report EBP-related findings from the national Hospital-Based Nursing Research Characteristics, Care Delivery Outcomes, and Economic Impact Survey questionnaire. METHODS: In this cross-sectional survey research study of 181 nursing research leaders, 127 responded to these questions: "Has your hospital adopted or does it use a model of evidence-based practice?" "If yes, what is the name of the model and how is it used?" "Does your hospital implement (translate) findings from nursing research into clinical practice?" "Describe how your hospital implements these findings and whose responsibility it is...

Of the children and adolescents with mental health concerns who receive treatment, most do so in outpatient community mental health service sites, systems of care which have largely failed to produce significant clinical outcomes. Suggested strategies to improve care in child mental health treatment include improving families' access to services, increasing use of evidence-based practices (EBPs), and holding service sites accountable for demonstrating outcomes. Producing a workforce to implement these strategies will require cultivating providers who have developed specific competencies within a range of agencies that naturally interface with the daily lives of families and their children...

BACKGROUND: The Advancing Research and Clinical practice through close Collaboration (ARCC) model postulates that improvement in nurses' evidence-based practice (EBP) beliefs results in improved EBP implementation, which in turn improves nurse-related outcomes, such as nurses' job satisfaction and group cohesion. However, there is a dearth of interventional studies that evaluate the relationships among these variables. AIMS: This study evaluated whether a regional EBP fellowship program improved participants' EBP beliefs, EBP implementation, job satisfaction, group cohesion, and group attractiveness, and examined the relationships among these improvements, using structural equation modeling...

It is important for nurses today and for those joining the workforce in the future to have familiarity and training with respect to interprofessional research, evidence-based practice, and quality improvement. In an effort to address this need, we describe a 10-week summer research program that immerses undergraduate nursing students in a broad spectrum of clinical and translational research projects as part of their exposure to advanced nursing roles. In doing so, the program increases the ability of the students to participate in research, effectively interact with academic medical center researchers, and incorporate elements of evidence-based practice into future nursing interventions...

INTRODUCTION: Due to a limited health workforce, many health care providers in Africa must take on health leadership roles with minimal formal training in leadership. Hence, the need to equip health care providers with practical skills required to lead high-impact health care programs. In Uganda, the Afya Bora Global Health Leadership Fellowship is implemented through the Makerere University College of Health Sciences (MakCHS) and her partner institutions. Lessons learned from the program, presented in this paper, may guide development of in-service training opportunities to enhance leadership skills of health workers in resource-limited settings...

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic studies worldwide have provided substantial evidence of the contributions of environmental exposures to the development of childhood cancer, yet this knowledge has not been integrated into the routine practice of clinicians who care for children with this disease. To identify the basis of this deficit, we sought to assess the environmental history-taking behavior and perceptions of environmental health among pediatric hematologists and oncologists. PROCEDURE: A web-based survey was sent from June to October 2012 to 427 pediatric oncologists, fellows, and nurse practitioners from 20 US institutions, with an overall response rate of 45%...

Nursing research and nurse researchers have been an integral and significant part of the Oncology Nursing Society's (ONS's) history, as evidenced by the development of the Nursing Research Committee within a few years of ONS's establishment. Ruth McCorkle, PhD, RN, FAAN, was the committee's first chairperson in 1979. This was followed by the creation of the Advanced Nursing Research Special Interest Group in 1989 under the leadership of Jean Brown, PhD, RN, FAAN. ONS also began to recognize nurse researchers in 1994 by creating the annual ONS Distinguished Researcher Award to recognize the contributions of a member who has conducted or promoted research that has enhanced the science and practice of oncology nursing...

Ensuring patient safety and enhancing nurse satisfaction both rank high on most hospitals' list of priorities. One of the concerns at a large, comprehensive, county health care system in the southwestern United States has been the shortage of experienced obstetrics (OB) nurses to provide patient care. To address this concern, a nursing fellowship was implemented to facilitate successful transition and retention of experienced RNs into the specialty area of obstetrics. The program provided a gateway for non-OB nurses to participate in relevant, evidence-based didactic and preceptor-facilitated clinical experiences to ensure adequate knowledge, skills, and competencies to care for patients in labor, delivery, and recovery suites...

The Society for Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA) launched a nurse fellowship program in 2011 to promote evidence-based practice. Each accepted applicant was challenged to select a relevant topic, explore the current research, and translate this information to daily practice. The author, an SGNA Fellow, selected the topic, nurse-administered propofol sedation, that has been a prevailing subject in endoscopy for many years. A significant amount of literature has been written on the drug's safety and efficacy...
