INTRODUCTION: Patient specific 3D models have been widely used for pre-op planning and intra-op guidance in orthopaedic surgery. These models however are not often used in pre-operative doctor-patient communication. This study evaluates the roles of customized 3D models in improving patient understanding, confidence, and satisfaction of patient care when they were used during preoperative counselling. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective survey was conducted on 33 orthopaedic trauma patients who were required to rate on a scale of 1-5, the effectiveness of patient specific 3D models in: 1) improving patient's understanding and, 2) helping patients cope with the condition, 3) boosting patients' confidence in the treatment and 4) in the surgeon; and on a scale of 0-10, their overall satisfaction...

Acromioclavicular (AC) joint dislocations are not uncommon injuries. High-grade dislocations can be managed by arthroscopic as well as open techniques, but the most important thing is to address both vertical and horizontal stability. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the functional outcome of a cost effective double figure of eight technique of stabilizing both coracoclavicular and acromioclavicular ligaments in acute high-grade disruption (Type IIIB -VI) using fibre tape. This study was performed at our tertiary care centre from 2017 to 2020 after appropriate IRB approval and patient consent...

PURPOSE: Orbital surgery benefits from well-designed instrumentation that offers gentle tissue manipulation, high manoeuvrability and control. Nevertheless, in confined spaces, tissue manipulation must be accomplished with exceptionally high accuracy and precision. This is where robotic surgery offers an advantage. We aimed to evaluate a robotic-assisted surgical system's feasibility, safety and outcome in assisting tumour clearance. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A case series of patients with advanced periocular tumours undergoing robotic-assisted globe-sparing resection was performed using the DaVinci XI system (Intuitive Surgical, Inc)...

INTRODUCTION: The indications for postoperative admission after tonsillectomy in children >3 years of age are less well defined than for children <3 years old, and typically include severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), obesity, comorbidities, or behavioral factors. Inpatient care after tonsillectomy typically consists of respiratory monitoring and support, as respiratory compromise is the most common complication after pediatric tonsillectomy. We aim to evaluate risk factors associated with postoperative oxygen supplementation and to identify high risk populations within the admitted population who use additional resources or require additional interventions...

BACKGROUND: Craniofacial asymmetry associated with unicoronal synostosis (UCS) may persist into the teenage years despite surgery in infancy. This study evaluated outcomes following a nasal monobloc procedure by mobilizing a united nasomaxillary and bilateral medial orbital segment of bone (nasal monobloc) to perform corrective translational and rotational movement for secondary correction of residual nasal-orbital asymmetry associated with UCS. METHODS: A retrospective review of all UCS patients treated with nasal monobloc at our institution was performed...

INTRODUCTION: Difficult intubation is the situation when a skilled anesthetist has difficulties to manage airway using face mask, laryngoscopy, supraglottic device, tracheal intubation, surgery. Videolaryngoscope and flexible fibroscope (FFS) represent valid alternatives for difficult airway management, with some limitations. However, literature lacks of studies about the efficacy of the combined use of videolaryngoscope and FFS. CASE REPORT: We report a case of a man, with glottic lesion, who needs surgery under general anesthesia...

Intramedullary spinal cord metastasis (ISCM), though rare, represents a potentially debilitating manifestation of systemic cancer. With emerging advances in cancer care, ISCMs are increasingly being encountered in clinical practice. Herein, we describe one of the larger retrospective single institutional case series on ISCMs, analyze survival and treatment outcomes, and review the literature. All surgically evaluated ISCMs at our institution between 2005 and 2023 were retrospectively reviewed. Demographics, tumor features, treatment, and clinical outcome characteristics were collected...

BACKGROUND: Glenohumeral osteophytes (OPs) can adversely influence postoperative range of motion (ROM) following shoulder arthroplasty due to mechanical impingement. Though commercial three-dimensional preoperative planning software (3D PPS) is available to simulate ROM before and after OP resection, little is known about the magnitude of effect OPs and their subsequent removal have on simulated glenohumeral ROM. METHODS: Included patients were 1) indicated for reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) using 3D PPS and 2) presented with glenoid and/or humeral head OPs on preoperative two-dimensional computed tomography (2D-CT) imaging...

Intussusception (ISN) is a dangerous condition where a portion of the intestine slides into an adjacent area of the intestine. This telescoping motion frequently prevents liquids or food from flowing through. Developing management guidelines for ileocolic (IC) intussusception was the aim of this systematic study. Data sources were PubMed/Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), Scopus, and Embase databases. Our review investigated English-language articles (from 2010 to 2023) according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines...

OBJECTIVE: Aortic endarterectomy (AE), once a treatment of choice for aortoiliac occlusive disease, is now rarely performed in favor of endovascular procedures or open aortobifemoral bypass. However, in select patients with paravisceral or aortoiliac occlusive disease, AE remains a viable alternative for revascularization, either as a primary procedure or after prior interventions have failed. Here, we evaluated outcomes for an extended series of patients undergoing paravisceral or aortoiliac endarterectomy, demonstrating that these procedures can be an excellent alternative with acceptable morbidity and mortality in properly selected patients...
