Conservation translocations are an important conservation tool commonly employed to augment declining or reestablish extirpated populations. One goal of augmentation is to increase genetic diversity and reduce the risk of inbreeding depression (i.e., genetic rescue). However, introducing individuals from significantly diverged populations risks disrupting coadapted traits and reducing local fitness (i.e., outbreeding depression). Genetic data are increasingly more accessible for wildlife species and can provide unique insight regarding the presence and retention of introduced genetic variation from augmentation as an indicator of effectiveness and adaptive similarity as an indicator of source and recipient population suitability...

Climate refugia, areas where climate is expected to remain relatively stable, can offer a near-term safe haven for species sensitive to warming temperatures and drought. Understanding the influence of temperature, moisture, and disturbance on sensitive species is critical during this time of rapid climate change. Coastal habitats can serve as important refugia. Many of these areas consist of working forestlands, and there is a growing recognition that conservation efforts worldwide must consider the habitat value of working lands, in addition to protected areas, to effectively manage large landscapes that support biodiversity...

Private land protection is an important and growing tool to address biodiversity loss and climate change. Thus, better empirical evidence on the effectiveness of private land protection and organizational practices, such as targeting of lands for protection and choice of protection mechanism (i.e., fee simple land acquisition and conservation easements), is needed. We addressed this gap by estimating the impacts of The Nature Conservancy's (TNC) (a large nongovernmental organization with relatively decentralized management) conservation land acquisitions and easements from 1988 to 2016 in three regions of the United States (Mid-Atlantic, New England and New York, and California)...

OBJECTIVES: In Latin America, experience with monitoring serum Infliximab (IFX) concentrations is scarce. Our study aimed to compare IFX serum concentrations between patients with active disease or in remission. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed in patients with luminal Crohn's disease (CD) during maintenance treatment with IFX. Patients were classified as in remission or disease activity according to clinical scores and endoscopic, radiological, and laboratory markers...

Water monitoring faces challenges that are driven by the infrastructure, protection, financial resources, science and innovation policies, among others. A modular, low-cost, fully open-source and small-sized Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) called EMAC-USV (EMAC: Estación de Monitoreo Ambiental Costero), is proposed for monitoring bathymetry and water quality parameters (i.e. temperature, suspended solids concentration and hydrocarbon concentration) in complex water scenarios. A detailed description of each part of the platform as well as all electronic connections and functioning is presented...

UNLABELLED: Unfractionated heparin (UFH) is the most widely used anticoagulant in hospitalized patients. The therapeutic range (TR) was defined in adults according to the prolongation of the activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (aPTT). However, the recommendation is to maintain a therapeutic range with anti-factor Xa assay (antiFXa). As this technique is more complex to perform and less available, it is recommended to make local correlation curves of aPTT with antiFXa. OBJECTIVE: to determine the correlation between the values of aPTT and antiFXa in patients treated with UFH...

Phenytoin (DFH), is an anticonvulsant widely used for the treatment of different types of seizures.(1) Therapeutic monitoring (TDM) is required for DFH due to its narrow therapeutic range and nonlinear pharmacokinetics, among other characteristics. Monitoring is frequently done on plasma or serum (total drug) through immunological methods. DFH can also be monitored in saliva, which shows a good correlation with plasma. The concentration of DFH in saliva reflects the concentration of free drug and due to the simplicity in its collection, it leads to a less stressful process for the patient...

Costa Rica has made many advances in tsunami preparation over the past 9 years since the creation of SINAMOT ( Sistema Nacional de Monitoreo de Tsunamis , National Tsunami Monitoring System), both on watch and warning protocols and on community preparedness. Jaguars and pumas are top-predator species in the Neotropics that are threatened by habitat destruction, illegal poaching of their body parts and their favored prey, and by the human-wildlife conflicts that arise when predators attack livestock. Much of the remaining felid habitat in the Americas is in protected nature reserves that are too small and isolated to support local populations. Surrounding forests therefore play a vital role in felid conservation. Successful long-term conservation of these two felids requires evidence-based knowledge of their biological and ecological requirements...
