Prion diseases are incurable neurodegenerative conditions affecting both animals and humans. They may be sporadic, infectious, or inherited in origin. Human prion diseases include Creutzfeldt-Jakob desease (CJD), Gerstmann-Straussler-Scheinker disease, kuru, and fatal familial insomnia. The appearance of variant CJD, and the demonstration that is caused by strains indistinguishable from bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle, has led to the threat of a major epidemic of human prion disease in the UK and other countries where widespread dietary exposure to bovine prions has occurred...

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the infectious rates and incidence rates through epidemiological investigation. METHODS: Serum samples from 203 new soldiers were detected from Lboz by TAT. RESULTS: Infectious rates was 33.00% (67/203), and the incidence rates was 8.87% (18/203) with 2 cases of pneumonic type and 16 cases of pontiac fever type. CONCLUSION: The results suggested that an outbreak of Legionnaires' desease caused by Legionella bozemanii (Lboz) took place in a suburb of Beijing...

From 1994 to 1997, we had continuously and actively conducted surveillance on reports of legal infectious diseases and administrative performance of hospitals in this aspect. The proportion from outpatient clinic in the whole province under supervision had sucessively increased yearly. It suggested that the implementation of "report on the first visit" regulation had been improved; the number of hospitals with "no information on epidemic desease" had decreased, and the number of months with no information on epidemic disease had also decreased...

The AA. acting as members of Regional Health Assessor in Lombardy, have exposed the data of infectious diseases declared in comparison with the data of other Regions and also with data of the single provinces. Useful indications shall be offered to the operators of public health and also to the responsible persons of the local Administrations.

Three types of acute obstructive laryngitis in children are distinguished: 1. Acute supraglottic laryngitis (Epiglottitis acuta): The usual causative organism is Hemophilus influenzae, type B. Characteristic findings include a swollen red epiglottis.
