BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Management of Budd-Chiari Syndrome (BCS) has improved over the last decades. The main aim was to evaluate the contemporary post-liver transplant (LT) outcomes in Europe. APPROACH AND RESULTS: Data from all transplanted patients from 1976-2020 was obtained from the European Liver Transplantation Registry (ELTR). Patients<16yrs, with secondary BCS or hepatocellular carcinoma were excluded. Patient- (PS) and graft survival (GS) before and after 2000 were compared...

BACKGROUND: Direct comparisons of paediatric hospitalizations for acute coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) can inform health system planning. We describe the absolute and relative hospital burden of acute paediatric COVID-19 and MIS-C in Canada. METHODS: This national prospective study was conducted via the Canadian Paediatric Surveillance Program from March 2020-May 2021. Children younger than 18 years old and hospitalized for acute COVID-19 or MIS-C were included in the analysis...

The search for new anti-infectives based on metal complexes is gaining momentum. Among the different options taken by researchers, the one involving the use of organometallic complexes is probably the most successful one with a compound, namely, ferroquine, already in clinical trials against malaria. In this study, we describe the preparation and in-depth characterization of 10 new (organometallic) derivatives of the approved antifungal drug fluconazole. Our rationale is that the sterol 14α-demethylase is an enzyme part of the ergosterol biosynthesis route in Trypanosoma and is similar to the one in pathogenic fungi...

Overconsumption of added sugars has been pointed out as a major culprit in the increasing rates of obesity worldwide, contributing to the rising popularity of non-caloric sweeteners. In order to satisfy the growing demand, industrial efforts have been made to purify the sweet-tasting molecules found in the natural sweetener stevia, which are characterized by a sweet taste free of unpleasant aftertaste. Although the use of artificial sweeteners has raised many concerns regarding metabolic health, the impact of purified stevia components on the latter remains poorly studied...

BACKGROUND: Large-diameter head (LDH) total hip arthroplasty (THA) with a monobloc acetabular component improves hip stability. However, obtaining initial press-fit stability is quite challenging in atypical acetabula. The purpose of this study was to assess primary and secondary fixation of monobloc cups in atypical acetabula. METHODS: In this consecutive case series, the local arthroplasty database was used to retrospectively identify patients with secondary osteoarthritis who underwent primary hip replacement with press-fit only LDH monobloc acetabular components between 2005 and 2018 and who had a minimum of 2 years of follow-up...

One of the most heated debates in psychological science concerns the concept of repressed memory. We discuss how the debate on repressed memories continues to surface in legal settings, sometimes even to suggest avenues of legal reform. In the past years, several European countries have extended or abolished the statute of limitations for the prosecution of sexual crimes. Such statutes force legal actions (e.g., prosecution of sexual abuse) to be applied within a certain period of time. One of the reasons for the changes in statutes of limitations concerns the idea of repressed memory...

OBJECTIVES: Low grade serous ovarian carcinoma (LGSOC) accounts for 2.5% of all ovarian carcinoma more affects younger women than high grade serous ovarian carcinoma. Hysterectomy is performed routinely for LGSOC treatment, but fertility sparring surgery (FSS) is feasible for some early stages. Currently, there is no study about uterine involvement in LGSOC. We evaluate uterine involvement in LGSOC patients and aim to identify pre-operative predictive factors. METHODS: Retrospective observational study of LGSOC patients treated between January 2000 and May 2022 in the Hospices Civils de Lyon...

Here we describe the novel, multi-point Comet Interceptor mission. It is dedicated to the exploration of a little-processed long-period comet, possibly entering the inner Solar System for the first time, or to encounter an interstellar object originating at another star. The objectives of the mission are to address the following questions: What are the surface composition, shape, morphology, and structure of the target object? What is the composition of the gas and dust in the coma, its connection to the nucleus, and the nature of its interaction with the solar wind? The mission was proposed to the European Space Agency in 2018, and formally adopted by the agency in June 2022, for launch in 2029 together with the Ariel mission...

The worldwide retreat of glaciers is causing a faster than ever increase in ice-free areas that are leading to the emergence of new ecosystems. Understanding the dynamics of these environments is critical to predicting the consequences of climate change on mountains and at high latitudes. Climatic differences between regions of the world could modulate the emergence of biodiversity and functionality after glacier retreat, yet global tests of this hypothesis are lacking. Nematodes are the most abundant soil animals, with keystone roles in ecosystem functioning, but the lack of global-scale studies limits our understanding of how the taxonomic and functional diversity of nematodes changes during the colonization of proglacial landscapes...

The mechanisms underlying plant succession remain highly debated. Due to the local scope of most studies, we lack a global quantification of the relative importance of species addition 'versus' replacement. We assessed the role of these processes in the variation (β-diversity) of plant communities colonizing the forelands of 46 retreating glaciers worldwide, using both environmental DNA and traditional surveys. Our findings indicate that addition and replacement concur in determining community changes in deglaciated sites, but their relative importance varied over time...

Broadly applicable methods to identify and characterize antigen-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T cells are key to immunology research, including studies of vaccine responses and immunity to infectious diseases. We developed a multiplexed activation-induced marker (AIM) assay that presents several advantages compared to single pairs of AIMs. The simultaneous measurement of four AIMs (CD69, 4-1BB, OX40, and CD40L) creates six AIM pairs that define CD4+ T cell populations with partial and variable overlap. When combined in an AND/OR Boolean gating strategy for analysis, this approach enhances CD4+ T cell detection compared to any single AIM pair, while CD8+ T cells are dominated by CD69/4-1BB co-expression...

Western Eurasia witnessed several large-scale human migrations during the Holocene1-5 . Here, to investigate the cross-continental effects of these migrations, we shotgun-sequenced 317 genomes-mainly from the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods-from across northern and western Eurasia. These were imputed alongside published data to obtain diploid genotypes from more than 1,600 ancient humans. Our analyses revealed a 'great divide' genomic boundary extending from the Black Sea to the Baltic. Mesolithic hunter-gatherers were highly genetically differentiated east and west of this zone, and the effect of the neolithization was equally disparate...

Major migration events in Holocene Eurasia have been characterized genetically at broad regional scales1-4 . However, insights into the population dynamics in the contact zones are hampered by a lack of ancient genomic data sampled at high spatiotemporal resolution5-7 . Here, to address this, we analysed shotgun-sequenced genomes from 100 skeletons spanning 7,300 years of the Mesolithic period, Neolithic period and Early Bronze Age in Denmark and integrated these with proxies for diet (13 C and 15 N content), mobility (87 Sr/86 Sr ratio) and vegetation cover (pollen)...

PURPOSE: Accurate prediction of extraprostatic extension (EPE) is pivotal for surgical planning. Herein, we aimed to provide an updated model for predicting EPE among patients diagnosed with MRI-targeted biopsy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed a multi-institutional dataset of men with clinically localized prostate cancer diagnosed by MRI-targeted biopsy and subsequently underwent prostatectomy. To develop a side-specific predictive model, we considered the prostatic lobes separately...

Cardiac progenitor cell (CPC)-derived small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) exhibit great potential to stimulate cardiac repair. However, the multifaceted nature of sEV heterogeneity presents a challenge in understanding the distinct mechanisms underlying their regenerative abilities. Here, a dual-step multimodal flowthrough and size-exclusion chromatography method was applied to isolate and separate CPC-derived sEV subpopulations to study the functional differences related to cardiac repair responses. Three distinct sEV subpopulations were identified with unique protein profiles...

Nanostructured composite electrode materials play a major role in the fields of catalysis and electrochemistry. The self-assembly of metallic nanoparticles on oxide supports via metal exsolution relies on the transport of reducible dopants towards the perovskite surface to provide accessible catalytic centres at the solid-gas interface. At surfaces and interfaces, however, strong electrostatic gradients and space charges typically control the properties of oxides. Here we reveal that the nature of the surface-dopant interaction is the main determining factor for the exsolution kinetics of nickel in SrTi0...
