BACKGROUND: Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS), as a safe biophysiotherapy, can enhance bone-tendon (B-T) healing in vivo and induce osteogenic or chondrogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stromal cells in vitro. This study aimed to determine whether LIPUS can improve the efficacy of transplanted mesenchymal stromal cells on B-T healing. HYPOTHESIS: LIPUS can induce lineage-specific differentiation of transplanted adipose-derived stromal cells (ASCs) at the B-T healing site, thus resulting in superior healing quality when compared with LIPUS or ASCs alone...

BACKGROUND: Simple or non-syndromic types of oval window (OW) or round window (RW) atresia are relatively rare in clinical. Few studies have assessed bone conduction (BC) hearing in OW or RW atresia patients, with some reporting that BC hearing lies within the normal range, whereas others observing impaired BC hearing. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: This study explored the effect of blocking the OW and RW during BC in cat models. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-four cats were randomly divided into three immobilization groups (OW blockage, RW blockage, and OW + RW blockage) and control group...

Spinal cord injury is a very common pathological event that has devastating functional consequences in patients. In recent years, several research groups are trying to find an effective therapy that could be applied in clinical practice. In this study, we analyzed the combination of different strategies as a potential therapy for spinal cord injury. Immunization with neural derived peptides (INDP), inhibition of glial scar formation (dipyridyl: DPY), as well as the use of biocompatible matrix (fibrin glue: FG) impregnated with bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were combined and then its beneficial effects were evaluated in the induction of neuroprotection and neuroregeneration after acute SCI...

The reconstruction of the nasal dorsum after a hump resection is challenging if narrowing of the nose is to be avoided, the nasal skin is very thin, and the nasal bones are short. This report describes the replacement of the bony and cartilaginous nasal dorsum after resection with an anatomically shaped dorsal replacement graft of diced cartilage in fibrin glue. The technique is illustrated with a clinical case and sonographic morphometry of the nasal dorsum and tip. A modification of the diced cartilage glue graft for thin-skinned patients is presented...

Extracellular matrix materials mechanically dissociated into submillimeter particles have a larger surface area than sheet materials and enhanced cellular attachment. Decellularized porcine mesothelial extracellular matrix microparticles were seeded with bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells and cultured in a rotating bioreactor. The mesenchymal stromal cells attached and grew to confluency on the microparticles. The cell-seeded microparticles were then encapsulated in varying concentrations of fibrin glue, and the cells migrated rapidly off the microparticles...

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Fibrin Glue (FG) and activated platelet-rich plasma (a-PRP) on the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of human dental pulp stem cells (h-DPSCs). Therefore, we planned to investigate in vitro behavior of porous composite scaffolds based on chitosan-gelatin/nanohydroxyapatite (CS-G/nHA) treated with FG and a-PRP. The porous structure of CS-G/nHA was prepared using combination of particle leaching and freeze-drying methods. The a-PRP was prepared from the centrifugation of whole blood activated with calcium chloride...

RATIONALE: Currently, interventional injection of albumin glue and nerve sleeve plasty by cyst excision is the main treatment for sacral cysts. However, albumin glue can only be used in patients with partial cystic neck stenosis, and surgical treatment may result in postoperative complications such as numbness and cyst recurrence. Here, a modified radiculoplasty is presented, in which the lamina is restored with the nerve root wrapped with 3-dimensional (3D)-printed artificial dura mater...

Appropriate regeneration of periodontal tissues is the primary purpose of periodontal disease treatment. The present study assessed the impact of three key regenerative elements-platelet-rich plasma (PRP), canine bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (cBM-MSCs), and fibrin glue-on periodontal regeneration. In each of the study's five dogs, Class II furcation defects were established on the buccal surface of five teeth. One tooth (five total) from each dog was placed into one of five groups: (1) PRP + fibrin glue, (2) PRP + fibrin glue + cBM-MSCs, (3) fibrin glue, (4) cBM-MSCs + fibrin glue, and (5) control (no treatment)...

Hydroxyapatite (HA) is the main mineral component of bone and teeth. HA is often used as a bone substitute and especially in its granular form it is osteoconductive and osseointegrating as shown by many investigations in animals and humans. HA granules are used for filling bone defects, but they have poor handling qualities and retention at the surgical site, leading to graft voids between the granules and bone tissue and resulting in mechanical instability. Furthermore HA implantation is not constantly followed by favorable results, especially when it is carried out for augmentation of the alveolar ridge...

Recent advances in the development of protein-based vaccines have expanded the opportunities for preventing and treating both infectious diseases as well as cancer. However, the development of readily and efficient antigen delivery systems capable of stimulating strong cytotoxic T-lymphocyte (CTL) responses remains a challenge. With the attempt to closely mimic the properties of viruses in terms of their size and molecular organization, we constructed RNA (which is a ligand for Toll-like receptor 7 (TLR7) and TLR8) and antigen-loaded nanoparticles resembling the structural organization of viruses...

We established widely applicable DNA extraction methods to identify the origins of crude drugs derived from animals. Twenty-one samples including 17 kinds of crude drug derived from animals were examined. DNA was extracted from most of the crude drugs by adjustment of the QIAamp® DNA Mini Kit. DNA extraction was performed successfully using phenol to remove impurities after applying a proteinase treatment. DNA extraction was performed successfully by decalcification treatment using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), before applying the proteinase treatment for crude drugs having high calcium content, such as those from oyster shell and cuttlefish bone...
