To cultivate competencies in interprofessional collaboration (IPC) for patient-centered, team-based care, a multi-faceted training enhancement initiative was implemented at our academic primary care residency site. Evaluation of the activities from previously collected survey data occurred upon a 2-year review. First, the evaluation team scrutinized the instruments for alignment and appropriateness with planned IPC educational learning and behavior objectives. We found the two instruments were well supported by the literature and with appropriate evidence for validation, but were not well aligned to the objectives of this IPC training initiative, reducing appropriateness of potential inferences of the findings for this context...

BACKGROUND: CAPACITI is a virtual education program that teaches primary care teams how to provide an early palliative approach to care. After piloting its implementation, we conducted an in-depth qualitative study with CAPACITI participants to assess the effectiveness of the components and to understand the challenges and enablers to virtual palliative care education. METHODS: We applied a qualitative case study approach to assess and synthesize three sources of data collected from the teams that participated in CAPACITI: reflection survey data, open text survey data, and focus group transcriptions...

OBJECTIVE: The primary objective was to describe the pedagogical approach of conducting 2 Interprofessional Education (IPE) sessions focused on IPE Collaborative (IPEC) Core Competencies in a required pharmacy and nursing didactic course. The secondary objective was to use quantitative and qualitative methods to assess students' self-reported IPE knowledge, skills, and attitudes after the IPE sessions. METHODS: Sessions consisted of active learning exercises with supplemental lectures, emphasizing students work together to find optimal solutions to both clinical and nonclinical problems...

BACKGROUND: Most health systems are insufficiently prepared to promote the participation of chronically ill patients in their care. Strong primary health care (PHC) strengthens patients' resources and thus promotes their participation. The tasks of providing continuous care to people with chronic diseases and promoting self-management are the responsibility of PHC nurses. Recent research assessing enablers of or barriers to nurses' efforts to support patients' participation has mostly not considered the special situation of patients with chronic diseases or focused on the PHC setting...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The number of family physicians who include obstetric care in their scope of practice is declining, resulting in lower access for patients to obstetric care, especially in rural and underserved communities. In our study, we aimed to understand the experiences of mid- to late-career family physicians and capture suggestions regarding how to maintain obstetric deliveries as part of practice throughout their careers. METHODS: We administered a 30-item online survey to mid- to late-career family physicians regarding their obstetrical care practice and their suggestions for family physicians to continue attending deliveries throughout the course of their career...

BACKGROUND: Essential skills for respiratory therapists extend beyond the traditional scope of therapy. Respiratory therapists are expected to communicate effectively, deliver bedside education, and practice within interprofessional teams. Respiratory therapy entry-to-practice program accreditation standards require evaluation of student competence in communication and interprofessional practice. This study aimed to determine if entry into practice programs include curriculum and competency evaluation for oral communication, patient education, telehealth, and interprofessional activities...

Interprofessional collaboration is essential to enhance quality of care and patient safety. It is clearly defined and requires the following 6 competencies: role clarification, teamwork, interprofessional conflict resolution, collaborative leadership, interprofessional communication and patient/client/family/community-centered care. Through different variations of a clinical scenario in primary care, we propose to demonstrate the importance of putting these skills into practice and to analyze the opportunities to reflect on the different types of interprofessional interactions depending on the complexity of the situation...

BACKGROUNDS: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training is generally led by instructors in a classroom; thus, conventional teaching materials used in CPR training are often constrained by spatiotemporal factors, limiting learners' interest and sense of achievement in learning and preventing them from effectively applying what they learn in practice. For greater effectiveness and more flexible application, clinical nursing education has increasingly emphasized contextualization, individualization, and interprofessional learning...

BACKGROUND: The majority of the United States population is overweight or obese, and obesity bias is frequently reported by patients. Obesity bias is associated with adverse health outcomes, even independent of body weight. Primary care residents are often sources of obesity bias towards patients with weight, yet education regarding obesity bias is significantly lacking in most family medicine residency teaching curricula. The aim of this study is to describe an innovative web-based module on obesity bias and discuss its impact in family medicine residents...

BACKGROUND: Acute high-risk abdominal surgery is common, as are the attendant risks of organ failure, need for intensive care, mortality, or long hospital stay. This study assessed the implementation of standardized management. METHODS: A prospective study of all adults undergoing emergency laparotomy over an interval of 42 months (2018-2021) was undertaken; outcomes were compared with those of a retrospective control group. A new standardized clinical protocol was activated for all patients including: prompt bedside physical assessment by the surgeon and anaesthetist, interprofessional communication regarding location of resuscitation, elimination of unnecessary factors that might delay surgery, improved operating theatre competence, regular epidural, enhanced recovery care, and frequent early warning scores...

BACKGROUND: Chronic disease management is important in primary care. Disease management programmes focus primarily on the respective diseases. The occurrence of multimorbidity and social problems is addressed to a limited extent. Person-centred integrated care (PC-IC) is an alternative approach, putting the patient at the centre of care. This asks for additional competencies for healthcare professionals involved in the execution of PC-IC. In this scoping review we researched which competencies are necessary for healthcare professionals working in collaborative teams where the focus lies within the concept of PC-IC...

In addition, organizational career management can affect nurses in some ways. AIM: Interprofessional collaboration is particularly relevant to patient safety in outpatient care with polypharmacy. The educational project "PILLE" is meant to give medical and pharmacy students an understanding of the roles and competencies needed for cooperation in the provision of healthcare and to enable interprofessional learning.
