The severity of disturbances in carbohydrate metabolism in rats with alloxan-induced diabetes depended on activity of antioxidant enzymes in the target organ (pancreas). Damage to the pancreas is related to intensive generation of reactive oxygen species, free radicals, and lipid peroxides. Alloxan-induced diabetes in rats is a free radical disease, which in vivo serves as a useful model for the search for pharmacological preparations with antiradical and antioxidant properties. The antioxidant compound probucol indirectly increased activity of antioxidant enzymes in the pancreas and prevented the development of alloxan-induced diabetes in rats...

We studied the effect of a complex containing antioxidant vitamins C and E, provitamin A, and antioxidant element selenium on the contents of primary (lipid peroxides) and secondary products (malonic dialdehyde) of free radical lipid oxidation in low-density lipoproteins isolated from the plasma of patients with coronary heart disease and hypercholesterolemia by means of preparative ultracentrifugation. Activity of key antioxidant enzymes in the blood was measured during treatment with the antioxidant preparation...

Glycosylation end-products formed during diabetes mellitus promoted atherogenic oxidative modification of low-density lipoproteins. We evaluated the effects of compensation of carbohydrate metabolism and therapy with antioxidant probucol on parameters of free radical oxidation in patients with type II diabetes mellitus. Compensation of carbohydrate metabolism reduced manifestations of oxidative stress, which was manifested in accelerated enzymatic utilization of reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxides and decreased content of free radical oxidation products in low-density lipoproteins...

Antioxidant effect of a complex preparation including antioxidant vitamins C, E, provitamin A and selenium was studied on the model of Cu(2+)-initiated free-radical oxidation of LDL isolated from human blood plasma. The antioxidant effect of combined administration of alpha-tocopherol+ascorbic acid and alpha-tocopherol+beta-carotene is far more pronounced that the antioxidant effect of individual components of these cocktails. Moreover, in the model system the combined action of all antioxidant components completely inhibited free-radical oxidation of LDL...

Soil inoculation with liquid cultures of Bacillus megaterium 501 and Exophiala nigrum A-29 capable of degrading several organophosphorus pesticides accelerated growth and development of experimental plants, formation of their generative organs, and improved their productivity. This was particularly observed under stress plant growth conditions on phytotoxic peach substrates. The microorganisms inoculated can probably degrade phytotoxins present in soils, thereby favoring the plant development.

A total psychiatric examination of the persons, after attempted suicides was performed during a month of stay in the department of resuscitation of the N.V. Sklifosovsky Institute for the Emergency Medical care. In all the patients some mental pathology was found that took place in the moment of suicide and long before it. In most of the cases the disorders of either affective (48.7%) or schizophrenic (38.5%) spectrum were diagnosed. Psychogenic reactions to stress and personality disorders were in only 10...

REVIEW
O Ia Bokser
The theoretical and experimental priorities of Russian scientists A. V. Zaporozhets and M. I. Lisina in creating the doctrine of biological feedback (BFB) in 1955 are justified. The priority of American scientists (N. Miller, 1969) in the discovery of the fact that BFB can form in animals is recognized. USA scientists were also be the first to develop and provide a base for manufacturing commercial devices for shaping BFB that have gained wide practical recognition in medicine, sports, and psychophysiology.

Therapeutic effectiveness of 3 new extrusion foods was studied in control conditions of clinic of Institute of nutrition RAMS. The foods were produced by Institute of meat industry RAS on basis of meat resources and wheat brans. The samples of extrusion foods were differed by contents of protein (17-23 g%) and dietary fibers (up to 10%) and used in therapeutic diet for patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. It was shown that of all three extrusion foods caused decreasing of dyspeptic symptoms during first week of intake and normalisation of intestinal functions without using of laxatives unlike of control group of patients eating standard diabetic diet...

Examination of 52 males (aged 23 to 40 years) in the preclinical stage of ischemic heart disease revealed seasonal differences in the values of the blood coagulation and anticoagulation systems: in the spring, there was an increase in blood coagulation activity displayed by growth of the concentration of fibrinogen and soluble fibrin and a reduction in the amount of the plasminogen activator. The authors suggest conducting preventive treatment of patients in the spring, the most unfavourable season in respect of the effect of the pathogenetic factors...
