Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) reflects an autonomic dysfunction, which can occur as a complication to COVID-19. Our aim was to examine gastrointestinal symptoms and gut microbiota composition in patients with POTS and post-acute COVID-19 syndrome (PACS), compared with controls. POTS patients (n = 27), PACS patients (n = 32) and controls (n = 39) delivered fecal samples and completed a 4-day food diary, irritable bowel syndrome-severity scoring system (IBS-SSS), and visual analog scale for IBS (VAS-IBS)...

BACKGROUND: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common gastrointestinal disorder characterized by diarrhea or constipation and other symptoms such as pain, bloating, and flatulence. The disease often has a negative effect on quality of life and is also associated with symptoms of anxiety and depression. Pharmacological treatments are not always effective, and complementary and alternative treatments are common. Genus Bauhinia has been widely used in the treatment of diabetes, malaria, cough, headache, fever, piles, dysentery, flatulence, diarrhoea, ulcer and cardiovascular problems. Among 600 species of this genus, Bauhinia variegata, B. purpurea, B. championii, B. racemosa, and B. forficata are commonly used in the traditional medicine and found to be throughly investigated for their medicinal properties. They possess diverse pharmacological activities such as anti-diabetic, anti-microbial, antioxidant, anti-arthritic, cardioprotective, hepatoprotective, nephroprotective, fibrinolytic, and wound healing properties and most of the biological activities are corelating with traditional knowledge...

Retrograde cricopharyngeal dysfunction (RCPD), also referred to as retrograde cricopharyngeus dysfunction, is a condition characterized by the inability to burp. The pathophysiology of this condition is thought to result from failure of cricopharyngeal sphincter relaxation during periods of esophageal distension, which leads to patients' bothersome symptoms. RCPD negatively impacts patients' quality of life and is associated with bloating, gurgling, avoidance of carbonation, self-imposed dietary and lifestyle changes designed to minimize discomfort, and flatulence...

This prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Streptococcus salivarius K12 (SsK12) in reducing the incidence, duration, and severity of severe OM (SOM). METHODS: A total of 160 patients with malignant head and neck tumors undergoing definitive or postoperative adjuvant RT were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive SsK12 probiotic (n = 80) or placebo (n = 80) at West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, China...

Gastrointestinal and urological symptoms are frequently reported by people with myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) but have remained understudied. In a cross-sectional study, frequency, nature, treatment and impact of gastrointestinal and urological symptoms in children with DM1 aged 5-18 years were assessed. We included 58 children (30 males, 28 females) with a mean age of 13 years; 74.1 % reported at least one gastrointestinal symptom. Abdominal pain was the most frequently reported symptom (51.7 %), followed by dysphagia (41...

Chewable gummies are an attractive dosage form for all age groups because of their appearance and texture. Although, this dosage form has been highly preferred administering nutraceuticals, its application in the pharmaceutical sector is worth exploring. In this study, simethicone (SMT), an OTC drug prescribed for anti-flatulence was incorporated in pectin- based, low-calorie, 3D printed gummies. Semi-solid extrusion (SSE)-based 3D printing was used to dispense personalized dose of SMT i.e 40 mg for children and 125 mg for adults...

PURPOSE: High-dose-rate brachytherapy (HDR-BT) and external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) are effective treatments for prostate cancer but cause genitourinary (GU) and gastrointestinal (GI) toxicities. There is no consensus on the timing of HDR-BT in relation to EBRT and the effect of sequencing on patients. Lactose intolerance is a condition causing an inability to absorb and digest lactose leading to gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, and flatulence. Because of the similarities between lactose intolerance and cow's milk allergy, it is becoming necessary to increase physicians' understanding of these two diseases. Consequently, we aimed to determine the level of knowledge of lactose intolerance and cow's milk allergy among medical students...

Enhancing the effectiveness of exercise for long-term body weight management and overall health benefits may be aided through complementary dietary strategies that help to control acute postexercise energy compensation. Inulin-type fructans (ITFs) have been shown to induce satiety through the modified secretion of appetite-regulating hormones. This study investigated the acute impact of oligofructose-enriched inulin (OI) consumption after exercise on objective and subjective measures of satiety and compensatory energy intake (EI)...

(1) Serotonin primarily regulates our emotions. A complex process, which includes dysfunctions in gastrointestinal motility and deregulation of the gene responsible for serotonin reuptake (SERT), is implicated in the pathophysiology of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This also encompasses changes in intestinal microbiota, the response to stress, the intricate interplay between the brain and the digestive tract, heightened sensitivity to visceral stimuli, and low-grade inflammation. This paper aims to investigate the effectiveness of probiotic therapy in managing gastrointestinal and neuropsychiatric symptoms related to serotonin levels, with a focus on individuals with serotonin deficiency and those with normal serotonin levels experiencing gastrointestinal disorders...

BACKGROUND: Retrograde cricopharyngeus dysfunction (R-CPD), a condition first detailed in 1987 and termed in 2019, refers to the cricopharyngeal muscle's inability to relax to allow the retrograde passage of gas. Limited research exists on the fundamental characteristics of this condition, including its impact on one's life. The purpose of this study is to characterize R-CPD and how the inability to burp affects the social lives of people who suffer from it. METHODS: A Qualtrics survey was distributed on the subreddit "r/noburp," a community of 26,000 individuals sharing information about R-CPD...

BACKGROUND: Immaturities present at birth, such as in the gut microbiome and digestive, nervous, and immune system, resolve with time. Nevertheless, this may result in mild digestive symptoms early in life, particularly in formula-fed infants. Formula composition and processing may impact this discomfort. This study therefore aimed to assess stool characteristics and gastrointestinal symptoms of healthy infants fed different formulae. METHODS: A multicenter, cross-sectional, observational trial was performed in Mexico between November 2019 and January 2022, where exclusively formula-fed infants (n = 342, aged 1-4 months) were studied in four groups based on their existing formula use...
