Molten gallium trichloride emerges as a promising solvent for oxidative metal recycling. The use of supercritical fluid enhances the performance and kinetics of metal dissolution due to significantly lower viscosity in the reaction media. Additionally, the dual molecular nature of gallium trichloride, existing as edge-sharing ES-Ga2 Cl6 dimers at low temperatures and high pressure, or flat trigonal GaCl3 monomers in the vicinity of the critical point and low pressures, creates the possibility to tailor the chemical geometry to a particular metallic species...

Olive leaves ( Olea europaea L.) contain a multitude of bioactive compounds such as sterols, carotenes, triterpenic alcohols and phenolic compounds. These compounds have been shown to exhibit antiviral, antioxidant, candida-growth-inhibitory, anticancer, antifungal, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities. In this sense, submicron particles from olive leaves with antioxidant activity were precipitated by supercritical antisolvent extraction in a previous work. Moreover, encapsulation enables the delayed release of compounds and avoids the first-step effect in medical therapies...

Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) was used to extract bioactive compounds from apple ( Malus domestica ) peel waste from three different Italian cultivars. The bioactive fractions were extracted applying a temperature of 60 °C and a pressure of 250 bar for 15 min with 20% ethanol as co-solvent, at a flow rate of 2 mL/min. The total polyphenol (TP), anthocyanin (TA), ascorbic acid (AA), and antioxidant activity contents (TACs) were measured, while chromatographic analyses were performed to highlight the differences between the extracts...

Because food byproducts (waste) are rich in phytoconstituents, valorizing them is crucial for global food security. However, conventional extraction (CE), including decoction, maceration, Soxhlet, etc., for agro byproducts' polyphenol extraction are time-consuming and rely significantly on vast volumes of potentially aggressive solvents. Hence, Avantgarde extraction technologies, including non-thermal (high hydrostatic pressure (HHPE), pulsed-electric field (PEF), high voltage electrical discharges (HVED), etc...

Sterols are unsaponifiable lipids resulting from plant metabolism that exhibit interesting bioactive properties. Microalgae are a major source of specific phytosterols, most of which are still not fully characterized. The similarity in sterol structures and the existence of positional isomers make the separation of phytosterols challenging. A method was developed based on an offline two-dimensional (2D) system, reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC)-supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC)/quadrupole time-of-flight (Q-ToF) mass spectrometry, for the identification of sterols in microalgae...

Extraction of vitamin D, including its hydroxylated and esterified metabolites, from soft tissues such as the liver is challenging due to the lipophilic character of matrix and analytes that are expected in very low concentration levels. In this study, we aimed at the optimization of two-step extraction using solid-liquid extraction as the first step, followed by solid-phase extraction. Various solvents, including ethanol, acetonitrile, methanol, acetone, heptane, and heptane with isopropanol, were investigated to isolate vitamin D compounds from liver tissue in the first step...

Fat-soluble vitamin D is an essential bioactive compound important for human health. Insufficient vitamin D levels can result not only in bone disease but also in other disorders, such as cancer, metabolic disorders, and diseases related to poor immune function. The current methods commonly used for vitamin D analysis are often applied to determine the levels of the most abundant metabolite in plasma, i.e., 25-OH-D2 /D3 . These methods do not consider the presence of other hydroxylated and esterified metabolites, including isomers and epimers, which are typically found in low concentrations...

According to the mixed solvency concept, a novel concept of solubilization, the solubility of poorly soluble drugs can be increased by dissolving them in a concentrated solution comprising various substances. Methods commonly used to improve solubility include complexation, pH modification, salt formation, hydrotropy, cosolvency, and micelle solubilization...

We report a neutral high-spin diradical of chiral C 2 -symmetric bis[5]diazahelicene with Δ E ST ≈ 0.4 kcal mol-1 , as determined by EPR spectroscopy/SQUID magnetometry. The diradical is the most persistent among all high-spin aminyl radicals reported to date by a factor of 20, with a half-life of up to 6 days in 2-MeTHF at room temperature. Its triplet ground state and excellent persistence may be associated with the unique spin density distribution within the dihydrophenazine moiety, which characterizes two effective 3-electron C-N bonds analogous to the N-O bond of a nitroxide radical...

In the absence of noise, the system away from the boundaries is described by linear differential equations with a delay time τ. The d,τ plane consists of two domains separated by a critical curve. For asymptotically long times, subcritical orbits approach a nontrivial periodic attractor, while the supercritical ones tend to a stationary state at the origin...

Despite important implications for engineering applications such as cavitation erosion in liquid propellant rocket engines, these intense phenomena are still largely unexplored. In this paper, we systematically investigate the ambient conditions leading to the occurrence of violent collapses in liquid nitrogen and analyze their thermodynamic characteristics. Using Brenner's time ratio χ, the regime of violent collapse is identified in the ambient pressure-temperature parameter space...

The thermodynamics of liquids and supercritical fluids is notorious for eluding a general theory, as can be done for crystalline solids on the basis of phonons and crystal symmetry. The extension of solid state notions, such as configurational entropy and phonons, to the liquid state remains an intriguing but challenging topic. This is particularly true for liquids, such as water, whose many structural anomalies give it unique properties. Here, for simple fluids, we specify the thermodynamics across the liquid, supercritical, and gaseous states using the spectrum of propagating phonons, thereby determining the non-ideal entropy of the fluid using a single parameter arising from this phonon spectrum...
