Excess of sludge generated during activated sludge process by various industries is causing sludge disposable problem worldwide. Sludge contains organic materials of a highly complex mixture of molecules with some toxic compounds. Thus, the harmful effect of sludge could be managed by processing of sludge and recovery of useful products. Sludge could undergo biodegradation and used for the recovery of enzymes and energy. Enzymes (amylase, alkaline phosphatase, lipase, proteases) are produced by microorganisms and released into the media to degrade organic matters of sludge...

For understanding the potential of achieving nitritation under different oxygen and ammonia levels, two activated sludge reactors with high (RH ) and low (RL ) dissolved oxygen (DO) were parallelly operated. During over two months continuous operation, rare nitrite accumulation was observed in both reactors. K-strategists Nitrosomonas oligotropha and r-strategists Nitrosomonas europaea were enriched in the RH and RL , respectively, yet their response to DO variations was almost identical. Although K-strategists Nitrospira defluvii dominated both reactors, species cultured with low-DO exhibited higher oxygen affinity...

Wastewater treatment is an important source of methane (CH4 ) emissions. In most large-size aerobic treatment plants, the excess sludge is digested in anaerobic reactors (AD), with the concomitant CH4 emissions. The guidelines of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have been adopted worldwide for quantifying the national emission inventories, which include wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) as a key category. The IPCC recommends using default emission factors (Tier 1) for countries with limited available data (such as Mexico and most developing countries)...

Filamentous bacteria belonging to the phylum Chloroflexi have received considerable attention in wastewater treatment systems for their suggested role in the operational problem of impaired sludge settleability known as bulking. Their consistently high abundance in full-scale systems, even in the absence of bulking, indicates that they make a substantial contribution to the nutrient transformations during wastewater treatment. In this study, extensive 16S rRNA amplicon surveys of Danish wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) with nutrient removal were screened to identify numerically important Chloroflexi genera...
