Membrane technology is an effective strategy for gas dehumidification and fuel cell humidification. In this study, cerium fluoride oxide (F-Ce) two-dimensional (2D) mesoporous nanosheets and their composite with 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide ([Emim][DCA]) ionic liquids (ILs) (IL@F-Ce) are introduced as fillers into polyether block amide (PEBAX® 1074) to fabricate mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). The slit-shaped mesoporous structure of the nanosheets facilitates the construction of water vapor rapid transport channels in MMMs...

Single-walled carbon nanotube buckypapers (SWCNT-bps) coated with a metal-organic framework ZIF-8 layer were used as supports for the preparation of Pebax® 3533 TFC membranes by both phase inversion and spin coating techniques. Upon proper characterization of the materials by X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetry and electron microscopy, the obtained membranes were tested in gas separation experiments with a 15:85 CO2 /N2 mixture. These experiments proved that the ZIF-8 layer prevented from the penetration of the polymer selective film into the SWCNT-bp support, giving rise to a highly permeable selective membrane...

Due to their interfacial defects between inorganic fillers and polymer matrices, research into mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) is challenging. In the application of CO2 separation, these defects can potentially jeopardize the performance of membranes. In this study, aminosilane functionalization is employed to improve the nano-sized zeolite Y (ZeY) particle dispersion and adhesion in polyether block amide (Pebax). The performance of CO2 /CH4 separation of Pebax mixed matrix composite hollow fiber membranes, incorporated with ZeY and aminosilane-modified zeolite Y (Mo-ZeY), is investigated...

This paper describes the application of poly(ether-block-amide) polymers, so-called Pebax, in fused filament fabrication (FFF). Pebax® is a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), a copolymer based on rigid polyamide and soft polyether blocks. By variation of the blocks, unique properties such as soft or rigid behaviour are tailored without additional additives and plasticisers. Pebax® Rnew® polyamide blocks are bio-based and made from castor beans that allow the design of sustainable applications. In this study, two types of Pebax were selected, processing parameters were characterised, filaments were extruded and applied to FFF printing, and the final mechanical characteristics were determined...

Most researchers focused on developing highly selective membranes for CO2 /CH4 separation, but their developed membranes often suffered from low permeance. In this present work, we aimed to develop an ultrahigh permeance membrane using a simple coating technique to overcome the trade-off between membrane permeance and selectivity. A commercial silicone membrane with superior permeance but low CO2 /CH4 selectivity (in the range of 2-3) was selected as the host for surface modification. Our results revealed that out of the three silane agents tested, only tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) improved the control membrane's permeance and selectivity...

A polyamide/Pistacia atlantica (P.a) gum nanofiber, fabricated by electrospinning method, was coated on a layer of PEBAX/PVA hydrogel embedded with green synthesized Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) and the prepared nanofiber-hydrogel composite was assessed for wound dressing application. The AgNPs were characterized using ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Zeta potential analysis. The cornerstones of sustainable development require the treatment of wastes or contaminated streams allowing the separation and recycling of useful substances by a more rational use of energy sources. Separation technologies play a prominent role, especially when conducted by inherently environmentally friendly systems such as membrane operations. However, high-performance materials are more and more needed to improve the separative performance of polymeric materials nanocomposites are ideally suited to develop advanced membranes by combining organic polymers with suitable fillers having superior properties...

MIL-101 (Fe) and MIL-GO composites were successfully synthesized and used as fillers for the preparation of Pebax® 2533/PVDF thin film MMMs for CO2 /N2 separation. The defect-free Pebax® 2533/PVDF thin film MMMs were fabricated by casting the Pebax solution containing fillers on the PVDF support. The presence of GO nanosheets in the reaction solution did not destroy the crystal structure of MIL-101 (Fe). However, the BET surface area and total pore volume of MIL-GO decreased dramatically, comparing with MIL-101 (Fe)...

Heterogeneous membranes, otherwise known as Mixed Matrix Membranes (MMMs), which are used in gas separation processes, are the subject of growing interest. This is due to their potential to improve the process properties of membranes compared to those of homogeneous membranes, i.e., those made of polymer only. Using such membranes in a process involves subjecting them to varying temperatures and pressures. This paper investigates the effects of temperature and feed pressure on the process properties of homogeneous and heterogeneous membranes...

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) have attracted significant attention in the field of CO2 separation because MMMs have potential to overcome an undesirable "trade-off" effect. In this study, the beaded nanofillers of ZIF-8@aminoclay (ZIF-8@AC) were synthesized using an in situ growth method, and they were doped into a Pebax MH 1657 (Pebax) matrix to fabricate MMMs for efficient CO2 separation. The beaded structure was formed by ZIF-8 particles joined together during the process of AC coating on the ZIF-8 surface...

Incorporation of dcIm into the ZIF-7 structure gives ZIF-7/COK-17 hybrids with rhombohedral symmetry that do not show the "open-to-closed form" structural transition upon solvent removal exhibited by ZIF-7. Fillers play a critical role in the performance of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). Microporous metal azolate frameworks (MAFs) are a subclass material of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Due to the uncoordinated nitrogen of the organic ligands, MAF-7 (SOD-[Zn(mtz)2 ], Hmtz = 3-methyl-1,2,4-triazole, window: d = 0.34 nm) shows excellent CO2 adsorption performance. In this work, Pebax 1657/MAF-7 MMMs were prepared by a sample solution casting method with MAF-7 particles as fillers for the first time. As a ubiquitous family of enzymes with high performance in converting carbon dioxide (CO2 ) into bicarbonate, carbonic anhydrases (CAs) sparked enormous attention for carbon capture. Nevertheless, the high cost and operational instability of CAs hamper their practical relevance, and the utility of CAs is mainly limited to aqueous applications where CO2 -to-bicarbonate conversion is possible. Taking advantage of the chemical motif that endows CA-like active sites (metal-coordinated histidine), here we introduce a new line of high-performance gas separation membranes with CO2 -philic behavior...

Approximately two-thirds of anthropogenic emissions causing global warming are from carbon dioxide. Carbon capture is essential, with membranes proving to be a low cost and energy-efficient solution to alternative technologies. In particular, mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) can have higher permeability and selectivity than pure polymer membranes. The fabrication conditions affect the formation of defects within the membranes. In this work, MMMs were created using a PEBAX MH-1657 polymer and a ZIF-8 filler. The effect of casting plate temperature, varying from -5 °C to 50 °C, and the effect of ultrasound treatment time (80-400 min) and method (filler solution only, filler and polymer combined solution only and filler solution followed by combined solution) were investigated, aiming to reduce defect formations hence improving the performance of the MMMs...
