We report the synthesis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic, and luminescence measurements of a novel family of luminescent cage-like tetranuclear silsesquioxanes (PhSiO1.5 )8 (LnO1.5 )4 (O)(C5 H8 O2 )6 (EtOH)2 (CH3 CN)2 ⋅2CH3 CN (where Ln = Tb, 1 ; Tb/Eu, 2 ; and Gd, 3 ), featuring seven-coordinated lanthanide ions arranged in a one-capped trigonal prism geometry. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibit characteristic Tb3+ and Tb3+ /Eu3+ -related emissions, respectively, sensitized by the chelating antenna acetylacetonate (acac) ligands upon excitation in the UV and visible spectral regions...

Massive production of SiO2 nanofibers with both high durability and exceptional performance remains a significant challenge. Herein, a novel approach was introduced to achieve the massive production of SiO2 nanofibers with lotus-leaf-inspired surfaces by combining solution blowing spinning (SBS) and the polymer-derived ceramics method. Based on the SBS technique, three types of precursor nanofiber products were fast spined with methyl silsesquioxane polymer and polymethyl hydrogen siloxane employed as Si sources...

Wound healing is a dynamic and complex process, it's urgent to develop new wound dressings with excellent performance to promote wound healing at the different stages. Here, a novel composite hydrogel dressing composed by silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) impregnated adenine-modified chitosan (CS-A) and octafunctionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) of benzaldehyde-terminated polyethylene glycol (POSS-PEG-CHO) solution was presented to solve the problem of wound infection. Modification of chitosan with adenine, not only can improve the water solubility of chitosan, but also introduce bioactive substances to promote cell proliferation...

A novel functional polycarbonate (PAGC), characterized by the presence of double bonds within its side chain, was successfully synthesized through a ternary copolymerization of propylene oxide (PO), allyl glycidyl ether (AGE), and carbon dioxide (CO2 ). Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes octamercaptopropyl (POSS-SH) was employed as a crosslinking agent, contributing to the formation of organic-inorganic hybrid materials. This incorporation was facilitated through thiol-ene click reactions, enabling effective interactions between the POSS molecules and the double bonds in the side chains of the polycarbonate...

The search for alternative chemical systems other than polymers with chain topologies for soft structural materials raises general interests in fundamental materials and chemical sciences. It is also appealing from an engineering perspective for the urgent need to resolve the typical trade-offs of polymer systems. Herein, a subnanometer molecular cluster, polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes, is assembled into molecular nanoparticles (MNPs) with star topology. Broadly tunable viscoelasticity can be realized by fine-tuning the MNPs' deformability...

The large sizes of granular particles lead to their slow diffusive dynamics and significant interparticle friction, bringing enormous difficulty to tune the mechanical properties and processability of the granular materials (GMs). Herein, 1 nm polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) particles functionalized with azobenzene are designed as structural units, and the obtained GMs show unique photoswitchable viscoelasticity. The azobenzene group can undergo a reversible trans - cis conformation switch while the π-π stacking among the azobenzene fragments is only favored by the trans -conformation due to molecular geometrical requirements...

Convenient self-assembly synthesis of copper(II) complexes via double (phenylsilsesquioxane and acetate) ligation allows to isolate a family of impressive sandwich-like cage compounds. An intriguing feature of these complexes is the difference in the structure of a pair of silsesquioxane ligands despite identical (Cu6) nuclearity and number (four) of acetate fragments. Formation of particular combination of silsesquioxane ligands (cyclic/cyclic vs condensed/condensed vs cyclic/condensed) was found to be dependent on the synthesis/crystallization media...

Polymers/polymer matrix composites possessing low dielectric constants (low- k polymer dielectrics) contribute to the advance of electronics, for instance, microprocessor chips, mobile phone antennas, and data communication terminals. However, the intrinsic long-chain structural characteristic results in poor thermal conductivities, which draw heat accumulation and undermine the outstanding low- k performance of polymers. Herein, multisource free-volume effects that combine two novel kinds of extra free volume with the known in-cage free volume of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSSs) are discussed to reduce the capacity for dielectric constant reduction...
