Aromatic carbonyls have been mainly probed as photosensitizers for aqueous secondary organic aerosol (aqSOA) and light-absorbing organic aerosol (i.e., brown carbon or BrC) formation, but due to their organic nature, they can also undergo oxidation to form aqSOA and BrC. However, photochemical transformations of aromatic carbonyl photosensitizers, particularly in multicomponent systems, are understudied. This study explored aqSOA formation from the irradiation of aromatic carbonyl photosensitizers in mixed and single systems under cloud/fog conditions...

This study critically reevaluates reported Biginelli-like reactions using a Kamlet-Abboud-Taft-based solvent effect model. Surprisingly, structural misassignments were discovered in certain multicomponent reactions, leading to the identification of pseudo three-component derivatives instead of the expected MCR adducts. Attempts to replicate literature conditions failed, prompting reconsideration of the described MCRs and proposed mechanisms. Electrospray ionization (tandem) mass spectrometry, NMR, melting points, elemental analyses and single-crystal X-ray analysis exposed inaccuracies in reported MCRs and allowed for the proposition of a complete catalytic cycle...

Bacterial invasion hinders the healing process of wound, leading to the formation of chronic infected wound; meanwhile, the misuse of antibiotics has resulted in the emergence of numerous drug-resistant bacteria. The application of conventional antimicrobial methods and wound treatment techniques is not appropriate for wound dressings. In this paper, quaternized poly(vinyl alcohol) (QPVA) and pomegranate-like copper uniformly doped polydopamine nanoparticles (PDA@Cu) were introduced into a gelatin-oxidized carboxymethyl cellulose system to form a multicomponent synergistic antibacterial hydrogel (GOQ3 P3 )...

Alkylamines form the backbone of countless nitrogen-containing small molecules possessing desirable biological properties. Despite advances in amine synthesis through transition metal catalysis and photoredox chemistry, multicomponent reactions that leverage inexpensive materials to transform abundant chemical feedstocks into three-dimensional α-substituted alkylamines bearing complex substitution patterns remain scarce. Here, we report the design of a catalyst-free electroreductive manifold that merges amines, carbonyl compounds and carbon-based radical acceptors under ambient conditions without rigorous exclusion of air and moisture...

Epimedium-Rhizoma drynariae (EP-RD) was a well-known herb commonly used to treat bone diseases in traditional Chinese medicine. Nevertheless, there was incomplete pharmacokinetic behavior, metabolic conversion and chemical characterization of EP-RD in vivo. Therefore, this study aimed to establish metabolic profiles combined with multicomponent pharmacokinetics to reveal the in vivo behavior of EP-RD. Firstly, the diagnostic product ions (DPIs) and neutral losses (NLs) filtering strategy combined with UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS for the in vitro chemical composition of EP-RD and metabolic profiles of plasma, urine, and feces after oral administration of EP-RD to rats were proposed to comprehensively characterize the 47 chemical compounds and the 97 exogenous in vivo (35 prototypes and 62 metabolites), and possible biotransformation pathways of EP-RD were proposed, which included phase I reactions such as hydrolysis, hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, hydroxylation, dehydroxylation, isomerization, and demethylation and phase II reactions such as glucuronidation, acetylation, methylation, and sulfation...

Multicomponent reactions (MCRs) offer a highly useful and valuable strategy that can fulfill an important role in synthesizing complex polysubstituted compounds, by simplifying otherwise long sequences and increasing their efficiency. The total synthesis of selected natural products employing three-component reactions as their common strategic MCR approach, is reviewed on a case-by-case basis with selected targets conquered during the last 15 years. The revision includes detailed descriptions of the selected successful sequences; relevant information on the isolation, and bioactivity of the different natural targets is also briefly provided...

Relaxation rate dispersion, i.e., nonexponential or multicomponent kinetics, is observed in complex systems when measuring relaxation kinetics. Often, the origin of rate dispersion is associated with the heterogeneity in the system. However, both homogeneous (where all molecules experience the same rate but inherently nonexponential) and heterogeneous (where all molecules experience different rates) systems can exhibit rate dispersion. A multidimensional correlation analysis method has been demonstrated to detect and quantify rate dispersion observed in molecular rotation, diffusion, solvation, and reaction kinetics...

Enantioconvergent reactions are pre-eminent in contemporary asymmetric synthesis as they convert both enantiomers of a racemic starting material into a single enantioenriched product, thus avoiding the maximum 50% yield associated with resolutions. All currently known enantioconvergent processes necessitate the loss or partial loss of the racemic substrate's stereochemical information, thus limiting the potential substrate scope to molecules that contain labile stereogenic units. Here we present an alternative approach to enantioconvergent reactions that can proceed with full retention of the racemic substrate's configuration...

The DNA-based logic circuit, constructed to mimic biochemical reaction networks, is highly significant in detecting biomarkers at the molecular level. The differences in the expression levels of microRNAs (miRNAs) within different types of cells provide hope for distinguishing cell subtypes. However, reliance on a single miRNA often leads to unreliable results. Herein, we constructed an enzyme-triggered cascade logic circuit based on the AND gate, which is capable of generating corresponding fluorescence signals in the presence of target miRNAs...

The development of antioxidant wound dressings to remove excessive free radicals around wounds is essential for wound healing. In this study, we developed an efficient strategy to prepare antioxidant self-healing hydrogels as wound dressings by combining multicomponent reactions (MCRs) and postpolymerization modification. A polymer containing ferrocene and phenylboronic acid groups was developed via the Biginelli reaction, followed by efficient modification. In this methodology, the diazo compound readily transforms into a hybrid α-ester alkylpalladium radical with the release of dinitrogen. The radical intermediate selectively adds to the double bond of a 1,3-diene or allene, followed by the allylpalladium radical-polar crossover path and selective allylic substitution with the amine substrate, thereby leading to a single unsaturated γ- or ε-amino acid derivative...
