Claudius Amyand's hernia is defined as the incarceration of the vermiform appendix in the hernia sac. The first reported appendicectomy was performed in 1735. It is very rare among children, hence its frequency is not yet established. We report the case of a 22-day old new born with untreated simple inguinoscrotal hernia who had an urgent admission to the Emergency Department due to occlusive syndrome with no evacuation of faeces and no passing of flatus, inflammatory inguinoscrotal swelling and bilious vomiting persisting for 2 days...

Neonatal progeroid syndrome is a unique condition wherein features of aging are apparent in a newborn at birth. It is a very rare genetic disorder. The first case in India was reported in December 2011. The anesthetic management of any infant with this condition could not be found in the medical literature. Independently described by Rautenstrauch and Wiedemann, neonatal progeroid syndrome poses significant challenges to the anesthesiologist for a variety of anatomic and physiologic reasons. Coronary and cerebrovascular atherosclerosis pose significant concerns in such children...

BACKGROUND: A retrospective review was carried out to determine the incidence of various causes and outcome of management in patients with acute scrotum. METHODS: Fifty children had a diagnosis of acute scrotum between 1st January 2007 and 15th May 2012. Age, mode of presentation, associated anomalies, and results of treatment were studied. Diagnosis of acute scrotum was confirmed by physical examination, Doppler ultrasound and biochemical investigations. RESULTS: Clinical presentation consisted of sudden swelling and pain in the inguinoscrotal region...

BACKGROUND: The presence of a vermiform appendix in an inguinal hernial sac is termed Amyand's hernia. It may present as a tender inguinal or inguinoscrotal swelling, and it is often misdiagnosed as an incarcerated or strangulated hernia. METHODS: Between 1998 and 2006, we have managed 564 patients with acute appendicitis, 1,090 patients with inguinal hernia, 33 patients with incarcerated inguinal hernia, and 12 patients with Amyand's hernia on our pediatric surgery service...

PURPOSE: The literature concerning undescended testis mainly concentrates on the increased risks of infertility and development of germ cell tumors. Yet the UDT also appears to be at higher risk for torsion compared to the normally descended testis, and this issue is relatively poorly addressed. We reviewed all cases of torsion of UDTs operated on at our hospital during the last 20 years in an attempt to characterize better this condition and its salvageability. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective clinical study we reviewed and analyzed all cases of testicular torsion involving UDT operated on at our hospital between 1984 and 2004...

OBJECTIVES: An indirect inguinal hernia is a common cause of inguinoscrotal swelling in young boys. We describe 3 cases of an extremely unusual entity that has a similar clinical presentation to more commonly diagnosed intrascrotal processes. METHODS: Two patients presented with acute hemiscrotal enlargement and pain, and a third patient presented with scrotal enlargement only. All patients underwent a scrotal ultrasound evaluation and subsequent inguinoscrotal exploration...

Between 1973 and 1992, a routine voiding cystourethrography screening was performed in all children attending our urological clinic. A total of 1023 children were diagnosed as cases of primary vesicoureteral reflux; 166 (210 renal units) of them were asymptomatic and were studied retrospectively. Ninety-one patients presented with enuresis, 39 with hypospadias, 14 with undescended testis, 8 with asymptomatic proteinuria and 14 had other manifestations such as intersexuality, inguinoscrotal swelling, abnormal external genitalia, etc...
