OBJECTIVE: Human pegivirus (HPgV-1, GBV-C) is classified within the Pegivirus genus of the Flaviviriade family. The natural history of HPgV-1 infection is still unclear, however, the main route of viral transmission seems to be the parenteral one. The detection of HPgV-1 viremia in blood donors without parenteral exposure demonstrates that other routes of HPgV-1 transmission might also exist. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the prevalence of HPgV-1 RNA and circulating genotypes among blood donors from a intra-hospital Hemotherapy Service localized in the Santa Maria city, central part of the Rio Grande do Sul State in the extreme South of Brazil...

Cell salvage is an efficient method to reduce the transfusion of homologous banked blood, as documented by several meta-analyses detected in a systematic literature search. Cell salvage is widely used in orthopedics, trauma surgery, cardiovascular and abdominal transplantation surgery. The retransfusion of unwashed shed blood from wounds or drainage is not permitted according to German regulations. Following irradiation of wound blood, salvaged blood can also be used in tumor surgery. Cell salvage makes a valuable contribution to providing sufficient compatible blood for transfusions in cases of massive blood loss...

Background: Chikungunya virus, an arbovirus that belongs to the Alphavirus genus of the Togaviridae family, causes a febrile illness accompanied by rash and arthralgia. It is estimated that during outbreaks, the prevalence of Chikungunya virus RNA in viremic blood donations varies between 0.4 and 2.1%; therefore, this virus may be transmitted by transfusion. In Brazil, Chikungunya virus has been claimed to cause extensive outbreaks, however, the seroprevalence of anti-Chikungunya virus IgG among Brazilian blood donors is unknown...

BACKGROUND: Despite the intensification of Chagas disease control in Brazil, around 1980s and 1990s, the transmission still occurs. The aim of this study was to identify the factors associated with Chagas disease among blood donors in Piaui State, Brazilian Northeast Region from 2004 to 2013. METHODOLOGY: Records of 597 blood donors from Management System in Hemotherapy Services and Laboratory Environment Manager System of Piaui were studied. Sociodemographic variables and serological tests results for Chagas disease's confirmation were analyzed using adjusted multiple logistic regression and odds ratio (OR) evaluation...

BACKGROUND: Suspected transfusion reaction (STR) investigations are foundational for biovigilance. Diagnostic evaluations performed by blood banks may prolong turnaround times (TATs) for final STR results reporting. We identified a quality improvement opportunity using diagnostic testing reflex algorithms and our hospital's patient electronic health record to enhance TATs regarding one aspect of STR results reporting. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We conducted a descriptive quality improvement study of reported STR cases investigated by our hospital's blood bank from March 1, 2014, to December 31, 2016, using data obtained from consult reports/quality improvement databases examining the number and types of diagnostic algorithm reflex activations performed and the TATs for an electronic provisional diagnosis reporting (PDXR) related to them...

BACKGROUND: Interdental papilla is of major importance to patients' orofacial aesthetics, especially regarding anterior teeth as part of the smile's harmony. Loss of gingival tissue, which constitutes interdental papilla, forms what in odontology is called black spaces. This loss, besides affecting the smile's aesthetics, also provokes phonetic and functional damage. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the authors is to present the result of three clinical cases treated with an innovative technique called hemolasertherapy, which stimulates growth of gingival papilla and thus permanently fills in the black spaces...

A prevalence study of antibodies anti Toxoplasma gondii in voluntary blood donors who attended the hemotherapy service at the Hospital Alemán during the first four months of the years 1997, 2007 and 2017 was carried out and the results were compared to the study carried out in 1967. The sera where processed with the Sabin Feldman Dye Test. The global average seroprevalence in 1967 was 67.0% (CI95%, 64.4%-69.6%); in 1997, 35.0% (CI95%, 33.3%-38.3%); in 2007, 31.9% (CI95%, 29.6%-34.2%) and in 2017, 21.2% (CI95%, 19...

BACKGROUND: Transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI) is a major complication of hemotherapy that may occur after the transfusion of any blood type component. Several clinical reports have suggested the presence of anti-HLA antibodies in the blood product. This study sought to examine the role of anti-HLA-A2 antibodies in polymorphonuclear neutrophil (PMN) activation and thus in endothelial permeability. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: PMN activation was assessed by both nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase (NADPH oxidase) activity and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production...

A 76-year-old woman was referred to our hospital because of an abdominal tumor in September 2009. An irregularly shaped large tumor was detected in the right subcostal abdominal cavity on computed tomography, and was diagnosed as advanced gallbladder cancer without distant metastasis following further examination. We then performed a laparotomy. The tumor had invaded directly into the descending portion of the duodenum and transverse colon. We performed a curative resection of the tumor macroscopically. Pathological findings were moderately differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma derived from gallbladder cancer(T3N0M0, Stage III )...
