The LifeWave Ultra-Wideband RF sensor (LWUWBS) is a monitoring solution for a variety of physiologic assessment applications, including maternal fetal monitoring in both the antepartum and intrapartum periods. The system uses extremely low power radio frequency (RF) ultra-wide band (UWB) signals to provide continuous fetal heart rate and contractions monitoring during labor and delivery. Even with the incorporation of three very conservative assumptions, (1) concentration of the RF energy in 1 cm, (2) minimal (2...

BACKGROUND: Normal amniotic fluid predicts normal placental function, fetal growth and fetal well-being. OBJECTIVE: To determine adverse pregnancy outcomes in borderline amniotic fluid index (AFI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pregnant women (37-40 wks) with diagnosis of borderline AFI between December 2012 and August 2014 were identified. Antepartum, intrapartum and neonatal data were collected and compared with those of pregnant women with normal AFI...

Phase rectified signal averaging (PRSA) is increasingly used for fetal heart rate (FHR) monitoring, both with traces acquired with external Doppler cardiotocography (D-FHR), and with transabdominal fetal electrocardiography (ta-FHR). However, it is unclear to what extend the acquisition method influences the PRSA analysis, whether results from using one acquisition method are comparable to those based on FHR acquired by the other method, and if not, which should be the preferred method. To address these questions, we applied PRSA analysis to 28 antepartum synchronous recordings of the FHR using simultaneously D-FHR and ta-FHR...

BACKGROUND: Cardiotocography (CTG) is the most widely used procedure despite its low specificity for fetal acidosis and poor perinatal outcome. Fetal electrocardiography (fECG) with transabdominal electrodes is a new, non-invasive and promising method with greater potential for detecting impairment of fetal circulation. This study is the first that attempts to assess the usefulness of fECG in comparison to CTG during antepartum period. OBJECTIVES: To determine if a single fECG examination along with CTG tracing and Doppler flow measurement in the fetal vessels has any additional clinical value in normal and intrauterine growth restricted (IUGR) fetuses...

BACKGROUND: Each year, 1.2 million intrapartum stillbirths occur globally. In Nepal, about 50 % of the total number of stillbirths occur during the intrapartum period. An understanding of the risk factors associated with intrapartum stillbirth will facilitate the development of preventative strategies to reduce the associated burden of death. This study was conducted in a tertiary-care setting with the aim to identify risk factors associated with intrapartum stillbirth. METHODS: A case-control study was completed from July 2012 to September 2013...

The aim of this study was to quantitatively investigate the oscillation of the fetal heart rate (HR) in advance of normal delivery and whether this index could be used to indicate impending delivery. In addition, fetal HR oscillation and umbilical artery resistive index (RI) were correlated to determine if the combination of these parameters provided a more accurate prediction of the time of delivery. Sonographic evaluation was performed in 11 pregnant bitches to evaluate the fetal HR and umbilical artery RI at the following antepartum times: 120 to 96 hours, 72 to 48 hours, 24 to 12 hours, and 12 to 1 hours...

We describe a case of neonatal periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) without evidence of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) following discordance in nuchal translucency (NT). A 34-year-old woman with monochorionic twins after in-vitro fertilization and embryo transfer was referred to our hospital. At gestational week 11, fetus A showed increased NT (7.0 mm) and normal crown-rump length (CRL) (34.3 mm). Fetus B had normal values, with a NT of 1.3 mm and a CRL of 32.3 mm. Both twins maintained growth throughout pregnancy, with no evidence of TTTS...

INTRODUCTION: Fetal distress has been shown to contribute to the increasing caesarean section rate. There has been controversy on the usefulness of clinical diagnosis of fetal distress using only the intermittent counting of the fetal heart rate and/or passage of meconium-stained liquor. AIM: To evaluate the clinical diagnosis of fetal distress and the perinatal outcome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study in which the case records of the patients, who were diagnosed of fetal distress at Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, Nigeria, from January 1, 2008 to December 31, 2014, were collated...

OBJECTIVES: To describe the antenatal fetal heart rate (FHR) parameters analyzed by computerizedcardiotocography (cCTG) in fetuses with gastroschisis and compare the FHR parameters with ultrasound gastrointestinal markers. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of antepartum cCTG records were conducted in 87 pregnant cases with fetal gastroschisis between 28and 36 weeks (plus 6 days). A comparative analysis of the median distribution of the following FHR parameters was performed: basal FHR, short-term variation (STV), FHR accelerations and decelerations, episodes of high and low variations, and variations in low and high episodes...

BACKGROUND: Vasa previa is a rare condition that is associated with a high rate of fetal or neonatal death when not diagnosed antenatally. The majority of available studies are either small, do not include antepartum data, limited to single institutions, or are biased by inclusion of patients from registries and online vasa previa support groups. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the diagnostic and management strategies for this potentially catastrophic entity and to describe further maternal and placental risk factors that may aid in the establishment of a screening protocol for vasa previa...

BACKGROUND: Decreased sensation of fetal movements (DFM) is a common maternal complaint. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the association between DFM and pregnancy outcome in singleton gestation at term according to parity. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of singleton pregnancies at term between 2008 and 2013. Eligibility was limited to women carrying a fetus with no known structural or chromosomal anomalies, at 37+0/7 to 42+0/7 weeks of gestation. Women presenting to the delivery ward with DFM were compared with women without similar complaints...

We report a case of marked elevation of the procalcitonin level in umbilical blood and neonatal blood at birth. The mother did not perceive fetal motion. Antepartum fetal heart rate monitoring showed a loss of variability and absence of acceleration. No fetal breathing movement, fetal movement, or fetal tone were observed by ultrasonography. The female neonate was delivered by cesarean section at 25 weeks of gestation, with birthweight 774 g. The umbilical arterial pH value at birth was 7.29. Mild elevation in interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α in umbilical blood were observed...

BACKGROUND: Advances in understanding the pathogenesis, diagnosis and management of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy have resulted in increased longevity and a better quality of life of affected patients considering pregnancy. Several case series which focused predominantly on obstetric details have reported generally good outcomes. However, there remains a paucity of data on the specifics of obstetric anesthesia in women with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. METHODS: After Institutional Review Board approval, we reviewed antepartum transthoracic echocardiograms, cardiology, obstetric, anesthetic, and nursing labor records with a focus on anesthesia for labor and delivery and early postpartum complications in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy who delivered between January 1993 and December 2013...
