Mitophagy, a conserved cellular mechanism, is crucial for cellular homeostasis through the selective clearance of impaired mitochondria. Its emerging role in cancer development has sparked interest, particularly in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). Our study aimed to construct a risk model based on mitophagy-related genes (MRGs) to predict survival outcomes, immune response, and chemotherapy sensitivity in LUAD patients. We mined the GeneCards database to identify MRGs and applied LASSO/Cox regression to formulate a prognostic model...

Fourteen sesquiterpenes, including one undescribed sesquiterpene lactone, were isolated from Youngia japonica, and their structures were identified by NMR, HRESIMS, ECD and calculated ECD. Cytotoxic activities of all isolates against A549, HeLa, and 4 T1 cell lines were detected by CCK8 assay. Among them, 2 showed obvious cytotoxic activity against A549 cells. Subsequently, the production of ROS, and apoptosis of A549 cells treated with 2 were evaluated. The result showed that 2 distinctly increased the ROS level, and induced the apoptosis of A549 cells...

Phenols such as bisphenols, parabens, and triclosan are common environmental endocrine disruptors. Previous epidemiological studies have suggested that phenols may affect semen quality, but the results were inconsistent. In addition, most existing studies have been limited to the effects of a single chemical compound, ignoring the health effects of mixed exposure to multiple chemicals. Thus, we aimed to explore the associations between individual and mixed exposure to phenols and various semen quality parameters...

Under stress conditions, translationally stalled mRNA and associated proteins undergo liquid-liquid phase separation and condense into cytoplasmic foci called stress granules (SGs). Many viruses hijack SGs for their pathogenesis; however, whether pathogenic bacteria also exploit this pathway remains unknown. Here, we report that members of the OspC family of Shigella flexneri induce SG formation in infected cells. Mechanistically, the OspC effectors target multiple subunits of the host translation initiation factor 3 complex by ADP-riboxanation...

Due to the emergence and spread of multidrug resistance in Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), its eradication has become difficult. Sodium sulfite (SS), a widely used food additive for ensuring food safety and storage, has been recognized as an effective nonbactericidal agent for H. pylori eradication. However, the mechanism by which H. pylori adapts and eventually succumbs under low- or no-oxygen conditions remains unknown. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the anti-H. pylori effect of SS and investigated the multiomics mechanism by which SS kills H...

Cancer has been the most deadly disease, and 13 million cancer casualties are estimated to occur each year by 2030. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs)-based photothermal therapy (PTT) has attracted great interest due to its high spatiotemporal controllability and noninvasiveness. Due to the trade-off between particle size and photothermal efficiency of AuNPs, rational design is needed to realize aggregation of AuNPs into larger particles with desirable NIR adsorption in tumor site. Exploiting the bioorthogonal "Click and Release" (BCR) reaction between iminosydnone and cycloalkyne, aggregation of AuNPs can be achieved and attractively accompanied by the release of chemotherapeutic drug purposed to photothermal synergizing...

Nanosized Pt catalysts are the catalyst-of-choice for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) anode, but are limited by their extreme sensitivity to CO in parts per million (ppm) level, thereby making the use of ultrapure H2 a prerequisite to ensure acceptable performance. Herein, we confront the CO poisoning issue by bringing the Ir/Rh single atom sites to synergistically working with their metallic counterparts. In presence of 1000 ppm CO, the catalyst represents not only undisturbed H2 oxidation reaction (HOR) catalytic behavior in electrochemical cell, but also unparalleled peak power density at 643 mW cm-2 in single cell, 27-fold in mass activity of the best PtRu/C catalysts available...

Ribozymes are catalytic RNAs with diverse functions including self-splicing and polymerization. This work aims to discover natural ribozymes that behave as hydrolytic and sequence-specific DNA endonucleases, which could be repurposed as DNA manipulation tools. Focused on bacterial group II-C introns, we found that many systems without intron-encoded protein propagate multiple copies in their resident genomes. The flower-infecting fungus Ustilaginoidea virens causes rice false smut, which is a severe emerging disease threatening rice (Oryza sativa) production worldwide. False smut not only reduces yield, but more importantly produces toxins on grains, posing a great threat to food safety. U. virens invades spikelets via the gap between the two bracts (lemma and palea) enclosing the floret and specifically infects the stamen and pistil. Molecular mechanisms for the U. virens-rice interaction are largely unknown. Here, we demonstrate that rice flowers predominantly employ chitin-triggered immunity against U...

As a potential treatment strategy for low immunogenic triple negative breast cancer (TNBC), photodynamic therapy (PDT) induced antitumor immunotherapy is greatly limited by the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (ITM) especially the M2 phenotype tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs). The balance of arginine metabolism plays an important role in TAMs polarization. Herein, a multifunctional nanoplatform (defined as HN-HFPA) was employed to burst the anti-tumor immunity of TNBC post PDT by reeducating TAMs through interfering the TAMs-associated arginine metabolism...

Creating different pore environments within a covalent organic framework (COF) will lead to useful multicompartment structure and multiple functions, which however has been scarcely achieved. Herein we report designed synthesis of three two-dimensional COFs with amphiphilic porosity by steric-hindrance-mediated precision hydrophilic-hydrophobic microphase separation. Dictated by the different steric effect of the substituents introduced to a monomer, dual-pore COFs with kgm net, in which all hydroxyls locate in trigonal micropores while hydrophobic sidechains exclusively distribute in hexagonal mesopores, have been constructed to form completely separated hydrophilic and hydrophobic nanochannels...
