Dental caries is a common disease on a global scale. Resin composites are the most popular materials to restore caries by bonding to tooth tissues via adhesives. However, multiple factors, such as microleakage and recurrent caries, impair the durability of resinous restorations. Various innovative methods have been applied to develop adhesives with particular functions to tackle these problems, such as incorporating matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors, antibacterial or remineralizing agents into bonding systems, as well as improving the mechanical/chemical properties of adhesives, even combining these methods...

Pancreatic cancer characteristically has an extremely dense stroma, which facilitates chemoresistance by creating physical and biological barriers to therapeutic agents. Thus, stroma-depleting agents may enhance the delivery and efficacy of chemotherapy drugs. However, stroma-targeting therapy for pancreatic cancer is a double-edged sword, as the stroma can also inhibit tumor metastasis and malignancy. In-depth understanding of the critical role of the stroma in cancer metastasis may improve therapeutic approaches by allowing them to harness specific features of the stroma to treat pancreatic cancer...

Interleukin-17 receptor B (IL-17RB), a member of the IL-17 receptor family activated by IL-17B/IL-17E, has been shown to be involved in inflammatory diseases. However, the regulation and function of IL-17RB in Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, especially in the early-phase is still unknown. Here, we found that gastric IL-17RB mRNA and protein were decreased in gastric mucosa of both patients and mice infected with H. pylori. In vitro experiments show that IL-17RB expression was down regulated via PI3K/AKT pathway on gastric epithelial cells (GECs) stimulated with H...

Cav3 channels consist of three isoforms, Cav3.1 (α1G), Cav3.2 (α1H), and Cav3.3 (α1I), which produce low-threshold spikes that trigger burst firings in nociceptive neurons of the spinal dorsal horn (SDH) and dorsal root ganglion (DRG). Although Cav3.2 plays a crucial role in pathological pain, its distribution in SDH still remains controversial. One study showed that Cav3.2 is ubiquitously expressed in neurons, but another study implied that Cav3.2 is expressed restricted to astrocytes. To unravel these discrepancies, we used methods of immunohistochemistry either with or without antigen retrieval (AR) pre-treatment to detect Cav3 in SDH and DRG from both rats and mice...

BACKGROUND: Genetic variability in the Hepatitis B virus X gene (HBx) is frequently observed and is associated with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression. However, a genotype classification based on the full-length HBx sequence and the impacts of genotypes on hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related HCC prognosis remain unclear. METHODS: We classified the genotypes of the full-length HBx gene through sequencing and a cluster analysis of HBx DNA from a cohort of patients with HBV-related HCC, which served as the primary cohort (n=284)...

We have introduced a novel water-soluble two-photon photoinitiator based on the host-guest interaction between 3,6-bis[2-(1-methyl-pyridinium)vinyl]-9-pentyl-carbazole diiodide (BMVPC) and cucurbit[7]uril (CB7) because most of the commercial photoinitiators have poor two-photon initiating efficiency in aqueous solutions. The binding ratio of BMVPC and CB7 was determined as 1:1 by isothermal titration calorimetry and quantum chemical calculation. The formation of the host-guest complex increases the two-photon absorption cross-section about five times, and improves the water solubility required as the photoinitiator for hydrogel fabrication...

Lanthanide (Ln3+ )-based ultraviolet B (UVB) microlasers are highly desirable for diagnostics and phototherapy. Despite their progress, the potential applications of UVB microlasers are strongly hindered by their low optical gain, weak light confinements, and poor device repeatability. Herein, a novel all-in-one approach to solve the above limitations and realize mass-manufactural UVB microlasers is reported. The gain coefficient at 289 nm is improved from two aspects, i.e., the enhanced absorption via LiYbF4 :Tm(1mol%)@LiYbF4 @LiLuF4 core-shell-shell nanocrystals and the suppression of competitive ultraviolet emissions...

Glioma is the most common malignant tumor in the central nervous system (CNS). Lower-grade gliomas (LGG) refer to Grade II and III gliomas. In LGG patients, seizure often appears as an initial symptom and play an important role in clinical performance and quality of life of the patients. To date, the relationship between the onset of seizures and the molecular pathology in gliomas is still poorly investigated. In this study, we investigate the potential relationship between isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH)/telomerase reverse transcriptase promoter (TERTp) mutations and preoperative seizures in patients with LGG...

Osteoporosis is a global bone disease characterized by reduced bone mineral density (BMD) and increased risk of fractures. The risk of developing osteoporosis increases with aging, especially after menopause in women. Discovering the signaling pathways which play a significant role in aging- and menopause-induced osteoporosis should accelerate osteoporosis drug discovery. In this study, we found that bile acid membrane receptor Tgr5 knockout C57BL/6J mice had similar bone mass as wild type mice during early and middle age (before 4 months old) bone remodeling; however, Tgr5-/- markedly decreased bone mass in aged (more than 7 months old) and ovariectomized (OVX) mice compared with wild type mice...
