Introduction : The increase in the use of mobile apps since the COVID-19 pandemic, even among people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) and health care providers (HCPs), has enabled access to reliable information, symptoms monitoring and management, and social connections. The pandemic has undoubtedly contributed to the acceleration of the "digital revolution." But how far has it progressed for the MS communities? Methods : Italian Google Play and App Store were queried, selecting MS-specific apps in English or Italian language and usable by a wide public...

INTRODUCTION: Neurogenic detrusor overactivity (NDO) has a major impact on patients' quality of life and can lead to upper urinary tract complications. Intradetrusor botulinum toxin type A injections are administered as second-line treatment to these patients following the failure of anticholinergic agents. The aim of the DETOX 2 study is to propose a consensus definition of the failure of intradetrusor botulinum toxin injections for NDO in patients presenting spinal cord injury, spina bifida, or multiple sclerosis (MS) with self-catheterization...

Purpose: This study examines the independent and interactive effects of age and multiple sclerosis (MS) on health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Materials and methods: The sample included persons with MS ( n = 207) and healthy controls (HCs; n  = 99) divided into three age groups (young, middle-aged, and older adults) who completed a battery of questionnaires, including the 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) as a measure of HRQOL. The SF-36 yielded scores for the Physical Component Summary (PCS) (i...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Higher latitude has been associated with increased occurrence of multiple sclerosis (MS) and with more severe disease. The aim was to study the impact of sun exposure habits on MS disease progression and health-related quality of life. METHODS: Patients from a population-based case-control study were categorized based on sun exposure habits at diagnosis and were followed up to 15 years post-diagnosis through the Swedish MS registry (n = 3314) with regard to changes in Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS)...

BACKGROUND: A scoping review found that most studies on women's health in multiple sclerosis (MS) focused on pregnancy, fetal/neonatal outcomes and sexual dysfunction. Few studies addressed menopause, contraception, gynecologic cancers/cancer screening. However, the perceived relative importance of these knowledge gaps to people living with MS and other partners is unknown. We engaged a range of partners, including people living with MS, health care providers, researchers, and patient advocacy groups, to set priorities for future research in women's health in MS...

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis presents a significant burden, with balance disturbances impacting patients' daily living. Conventional therapies have been supplemented with technological advancements like virtual reality (VR) and exergaming, providing engaging, multisensory rehabilitation options. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to synthesize evidence on exergaming's role in multiple sclerosis treatment, particularly to evaluate the impact of exergaming on cognitive, motor, and psychological outcomes in patients with multiple sclerosis...

This scoping review aimed to identify and summarize available data on sexual/reproductive health in males with MS (MwMS). METHODS: This review was based on PRISMA extension for Scoping Review. PubMed database was searched for keyword "multiple sclerosis" alongside keywords "sexual health", "reproductive health", "family planning", "male fertility", "male infertility", "sexual dysfunction", and "erectile dysfunction", iteratively using the "AND" logical operator...

BACKGROUND: To reduce the risk of long-term disability in people with Multiple Sclerosis (pwMS), an increasing number of disease-modifying immune therapies (DMT) are available, involving diverse mechanisms of action, levels of efficacy, treatment risks, and tolerability aspects. Including patient preferences and expectations in shared decision-making may improve treatment satisfaction, adherence, and persistence. PURPOSE: To investigate long-term alignment of individual preferences and expectations of pwMS with their actual DMT and its effect on treatment satisfaction, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), adherence, and treatment discontinuation...

INTRODUCTION: Depression occurs in over 50% of individuals living with multiple sclerosis (MS) and can be treated using many modalities. Yet, it remains: under-reported by patients, under-ascertained by clinicians and under-treated. To enhance these three behaviours likely to promote evidence-based depression care, we engaged multiple stakeholders to iteratively design a first-in-kind digital health tool. The tool, MS CATCH (Care technology to Ascertain, Treat, and engage the Community to Heal depression in patients with MS), closes the communication loop between patients and clinicians...

BACKGROUND: Standardizing health outcomes is challenging in clinical management, but it also holds the potential for creating a healthcare system that is both more effective and efficient. BACKGROUND: The Mediterranean diet (MD) is well-known as a diet which may exert a protective effect against neurodegenerative diseases, including multiple sclerosis (MS). To date, only a few clinical surveys have assessed the potential effects of the MD in patients with MS. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a rare, progressive neurodegenerative disease affecting both upper and lower motor neurons. Throughout medical training, it is taught that the most recognizable clinical presentation involves both motor and bulbar changes. Given the complexity of the diagnosis however, it is no surprise that there is significant multisystem involvement secondary to the autonomic dysfunction associated with the disease. The clinical cognitive biases that exist due to prior educational training and patient provided chief complaint can mislead clinicians and prevent a holistic, inclusive approach toward each patient encounter...

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, autoimmune, and inflammatory disease. The economic burden of MS is substantial, and the high cost of Disease-modifying drugs (DMDs) prices are the main drivers of healthcare expenditures. We conducted a systematic review of studies evaluating the cost-utility and cost-effectiveness of DMDs for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). Fatigue is the most common symptom among multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and severely affects the quality of life. We investigate how perceived fatigue can be predicted using biomarkers collected from an arm-worn wearable sensor for MS patients (n = 51) and a healthy control group (n = 23) at an unprecedented time resolution of more than five times per day. On average, during our two-week study, participants reported their level of fatigue 51 times totaling more than 3,700 data points. Using interpretable generalized additive models, we find that increased physical activity, heart rate, sympathetic activity, and parasympathetic activity while awake and asleep relate to perceived fatigue throughout the day-partly affected by dysfunction of the ANS...

Neuronal death, decreased activity or dysfunction of neurotransmitters are some of the pathophysiological reasons for neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and multiple sclerosis. Also, there is evidence for the role of infections and infectious agents in neurodegenerative diseases and the effect of some metabolites in microorganisms in the pathophysiology of these diseases. In this study, we intend to evaluate the existing studies on the role of infectious agents and their metabolites on the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases...
