Tinnitus has a lifetime prevalence of 25% in Germany. A common comorbidity in chronic cases are sleep disorders. The aims of this study were to detect sleep disorders and to identify possible associations with tinnitus parameters.Fifty patients with chronic tinnitus were recruited. The patients underwent audiometry, polysomnography, and completed standardised questionnaires on tinnitus and sleep behaviour.Data were available in 30 men and 9 women (age 50.2 ± 11 y, BMI 28.8 ± 4.4 kg/m²). The median duration of tinnitus was 36 (9; 120) months with a severity score of 2...

Extremity muscle hernias are rare pathologies, most of which are managed conservatively. In symptomatic cases, surgical intervention may be required. This study represents a case of a rarer muscle hernia, semimembranosus, in a 43-year-old patient and describes the surgical technique of grafting with synthetic nonabsorbable polypropylene surgical mesh as well as the review of the literature about extremity muscle hernias.

Problems with sensory processing may have an impact on the behavioral and psychological symptoms that can be seen in Alzheimer's patients. Examining the relationship between the two factors may provide a new perspective for the management of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia. Mid-stage Alzheimer's patients completed the Neuropsychiatric Inventory and Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile. The relationship between behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia and sensory processing was investigated...

BACKROUND: Environmental conditions such as variety, genetic, soil structure and plant diseases are effective on the oil amount and properties of flaxseed. By applying heat and extraction techniques treatment to flaxseed, the storage ability of the seed is increased by the removal of moisture, and the stability of the phytochemicals in the seed against heat is determined. RESULTS: Total carotenoid and phenol results of flaxseeds change between 0.13 (control) and 0...

Nowadays, antibiotic-loaded biomaterials have been widely used in wound healing applications. However, the use of natural extracts has come into prominence as an alternative to these antimicrobial agents in the recent period. Among natural sources, Cissus quadrangularis (CQ) herbal extract is used for treatment of bone and skin diseases in ayurvedic medicine due to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. In this study, chitosan-based bilayer wound dressings were fabricated with electrospinning and freeze-drying techniques...

Aging is a major risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD), and cell-type vulnerability underlies its characteristic clinical manifestations. We have performed longitudinal, single-cell RNA-sequencing in Drosophila with pan-neuronal expression of human tau, which forms AD neurofibrillary tangle pathology. Whereas tau- and aging-induced gene expression strongly overlap (93%), they differ in the affected cell types. In contrast to the broad impact of aging, tau-triggered changes are strongly polarized to excitatory neurons and glia...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: High sodium intake is associated with obesity and insulin resistance, and high extracellular sodium content may induce systemic inflammation, leading to cardiovascular disease. In this study, we aim to investigate whether high tissue sodium accumulation relates with obesity-related insulin resistance and whether the pro-inflammatory effects of excess tissue sodium accumulation may contribute to such association. METHODS AND RESULTS: In a cross-sectional study of 30 obese and 53 non-obese subjects, we measured insulin sensitivity determined as glucose disposal rate (GDR) using hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp, and tissue sodium content using 23 Na magnetic resonance imaging...

BACKGROUND: Air pollution has recently been linked to a number of cardiovascular diseases, particularly hypertension (HT). In our study, we aimed to evaluate the association between air pollution and BP and compare the relationship BP measurement results obtained using different methods (office, home, and 24-h ambulatory BP monitoring (24-h ABPM)). METHODS: This retrospective nested panel study performed with prospective Cappadocia cohort data investigated the relationships between particulate matter (PM) 10 and sulfur dioxide (SO2) and concurrent home, office, and 24-h ABPM data at each control performed over a two-year period...

OBJECTIVE: The neonatal period is the most vulnerable time for the development of seizures, particularly in the first weeks after birth. These seizures often signify serious malfunction or damage to the immature brain and constitute a neurological emergency, necessitating urgent diagnosis and management. This study was performed to identify the etiology of convulsions during the neonatal period and to determine the rate of congenital metabolic disease. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 107 term and preterm infants 0-28 days old who were treated and followed-up in the neonatal intensive care unit of our hospital between January 2014 and December 2019 were analyzed retrospectively based on data obtained by scanning the hospital information system and patient files...

Germinal centers (GCs) that form within lymphoid follicles during antibody responses are sites of massive cell death. Tingible body macrophages (TBMs) are tasked with apoptotic cell clearance to prevent secondary necrosis and autoimmune activation by intracellular self antigens. We show by multiple redundant and complementary methods that TBMs derive from a lymph node-resident, CD169-lineage, CSF1R-blockade-resistant precursor that is prepositioned in the follicle. Non-migratory TBMs use cytoplasmic processes to chase and capture migrating dead cell fragments using a "lazy" search strategy...

Low-grade malignant eccrine spiradenoma (spiradenocarcinoma) is a rare sweat gland tumor, which usually arises from a pre-existing benign eccrine spiradenoma. This paper presents the case of a 55-year-old male who had a lesion in his right elbow for 10 years. The microscopic examination revealed a well-demarcated, multilobulated tumor in the dermis and subcutis, which presented with many blood-filled vessels and extensive hemorrhage. The tumor was composed of hyperchromatic, round to oval cells with nucleolar prominence, mild to moderate atypia, and increased mitotic index...

The nasal cycle refers to the anticyclic swelling and decongestion of the two nasal cavities that occur during the day and during sleep, while the overall nasal flow remains constant. The nasal cycle was first described by R. Kayser in 1895. Each cycle consists of a working phase and a subsequent resting phase, the purpose of which is the rehydration and regeneration of the mucosa. A nasal cycle occurs in about 70-90% of people. The duration of the phase is affected by age, body position, physical activity, mucociliary clearance and time of day...

Infectious diseases of livestock caused by novel pathogenic viruses and bacteria are a major threat to global animal health and welfare and their effective control is crucial for agronomic health and for securing global food supply. It has been widely recognized that the transmission of infectious agents can occur between people and/or animals in indoor spaces. Therefore, infection control practices are critical to reduce the transmission of the airborne pathogens. ViKiller® -high-pressure sprayer and Deger® -disinfectant are newly developed spraying systems that can produce an optimal size of disinfectants to reduce airborne microbes...
