Primary lymphoma of the cerebellopontine angle (CPA) is rare in the central nervous system. To our knowledge, there have only been 14 cases reported worldwide so far. Here, we report our findings in a 57-year-old man, who presented with bilateral sudden hearing loss followed by left facial palsy within 1 month. Radiologic study and magnetic resonance imaging showed a homogeneous enhancing mass, 1.6 x 0.5 x 1.1cm in size, in the left CPA cistern region with mild extension to the left internal auditory canal...

Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging reliably demonstrate typical features of vestibular schwannomas or meningiomas in the vast majority of mass lesions responsible for cerebellopontine angle (CPA) syndrome. However, a large variety of unusual lesions can also be encountered in the CPA. Covering the entire spectrum of lesions potentially found in the CPA, these articles explain the pertinent neuroimaging features that radiologists need to know to make clinically relevant diagnoses in these cases, including data from diffusion- and perfusion-weighted imaging or MR spectroscopy, when available...

Although approximately 30% of facial nerve schwannoma cases present with no facial palsy, a large facial nerve schwannoma extending to the middle and posterior cranial fossa quite rarely presents without facial palsy. The authors encountered two patients with large facial nerve schwannoma who presented with only hearing impairment and no facial palsy. The first patient was a 64-year-old woman who presented with right auditory impairment without facial palsy. MR images demonstrated a dumbbell-shaped tumor in the cerebellopontine angle...

This study attempted to evaluate the reliability of ultra-thin T2-weighted imaging with a constructive interference in steady state (CISS) sequence as a screening method for tumors in the cerebellopontine angle. A retrospective study of 200 CISS examinations was made by five investigators. The examinations were inspected on plain film supported by clinical information. The interobserver agreement in the detection of lesions was analyzed. Fourteen cases (50% of the contrast-enhancing lesions) were rated pathological by all five readers...

BACKGROUND: Tumors of the cerebello-pontine angle are most commonly schwannoma and meningioma. Primary central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma usually presents deep within the cerebral hemispheres, occasionally is found in the cerebellum, and rarely occurs in the cerebello-pontine angle. We report a rare case of primary CNS lymphoma involving the right cerebello-pontine angle and the middle cranial fossa mimicking a tentorial meningioma. METHODS: A 21-year-old woman presented with right sided hearing loss and a facial droop...

The authors describe a rare case of primary central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma presenting as bilateral cerebellopontine angle lesions. Imaging showed bilateral cerebellopontine angle lesions and also a small mass in right lateral ventricle and anterior third ventricle region. The right cerebellopontine angle mass was surgically excised and radio- and chemotherapy given for the remaining lesions. This is the second case reported in the world literature. The case is discussed and the literature is reviewed...

BACKGROUND: Extra-axial primary CNS lymphoma, considered rare, mainly arise in the white matter of the brain. Though the tumor responds well to radiation and chemotherapy, the prognosis of primary CNS lymphoma remains poor. We report a case of primary lymphoma of Meckel's cave mimicking a trigeminal schwannoma radiographically, which achieved complete remission through use of rapid high-dose MTX therapy and radiation therapy. CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient, a 55-year-old Japanese male, presented left trigeminal neuralgia...

We present an unusual case of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma within pontocerebellar angle schwannoma in 62-year-old woman. The patient suffered for 5 months with V, VII and VIII nerves paresis and with cerebellar ataxia. CT scan demonstrated large hyperdensive mass in cerebellopontine angle translocating cerebellar hemisphere and cerebral trunk. The patient was subjected to surgery and the tumour was removed totally by suboccipital retromastoidal right craniectomy approach. Histopathological examination revealed schwannoma infiltrated with high grade B-cell lymphoma...

Extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) type has been reported in various internal organs. Here a case is reported of MALT lymphoma developing in the cerebellopontine (CP) angle in a patient with Sjogren syndrome, and the concept of MALT lymphoma of the CNS is introduced. Pathologically, the tumor showed inflammatory features of reactive lymphocytic infiltration with follicle formation, but there were slightly atypical lymphocytes and plasmacytes with B-cell markers...

Tumors of the cerebellopontine angle (CPA) are frequent; acoustic neuromas and meningiomas represent the great majority of such tumors. However, a large variety of unusual lesions can also be encountered in the CPA. The site of origin is the main factor in making a preoperative diagnosis for an unusual lesion of the CPA. In addition, it is essential to analyze attenuation at computed tomography (CT), signal intensity at magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, enhancement, shape and margins, extent, mass effect, and adjacent bone reaction...

Middle-ear tumours are not uncommonly mistaken for mastoiditis on presentation. We report a case of cerebellopontine angle non-Hodgkin's B-cell lymphoma originally presenting as a middle-ear inflammatory process. In mastoiditis not resolving with conventional treatment it is important to look for an underlying cause.

This paper presents two patients with chronic progressive hearing disturbance. Each patients had an intrameatal tumour, part of which extended to the cerebellopontine (CP) angle. In both cases, the patients were initially diagnosed with an acoustic neurinoma. A 63-year-old male experienced a hearing disturbance in the left ear for 1.5 years prior to visiting our hospital. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging revealed a mass which was surgically resected. The tumour originated from the intrameatal dura mater. Histologically, the tumour was a meningioma...

Primary malignant lymphoma is an uncommon disease of the central nervous system (CNS). Immuno-compromised patients are at high risk of development of malignant lymphoma. We describe a case of primary CNS lymphoma presenting as a solitary cerebellopontine angle lesion. The patient had undergone extirpation of rectal cancer four years previously. Malignant lymphoma presenting as a cerebellopontine angle mass is extremely rare, with only 10 such cases (seven were primary, and the other secondary) previously reported...

The clinical features of progression sensorineural hearing loss and vertigo in combination with the radiologic finding of a contrast-enhancing mass within the inner auditory canal are suggestive of an acoustic neuroma. We report our findings in a 57-year-old woman with known mixed connective tissue disease who was presumed to have a neuroma. A large malignant lymphoma of the cerebellopontine angle presented clinically with a primary acoustic none palsy and no other central neurological deficits. Both the primary radiological examinations and the exclusively peripheral nerve palsy failed to indicate manifestations of a lymphoma...

We report a rare case of a primary intracranial B cell lymphoma originating in the internal auditory canal. The clinical manifestations were indistinguishable from those of other, more common tumors of the same region. We achieved total gross tumor removal with preservation of the facial nerve. A detailed histologic examination and a systemic workup confirmed the primary nature of this tumor. To our knowledge, this is the second case reported in the literature of a primary malignant lymphoma originating in the internal auditory canal...
